Murdered Yale Grad Student Honored With Memorial

The private service in Battell Chapel will "celebrate the gifts of Annie's life" and allow members of the university "to share our grief over her death, and to support one another as a community," Yale's vice president and secretary, Linda Lorimer, said in a message to students and faculty last week.

The university is trying to cope with the death of Le, whose murder is made more troubling by allegations that a technician in the same lab where she had worked, Raymond Clark, had strangled her to death and stuffed her body in the wall of a basement in the research facility.

About 150 classmates, professors and others gathered at Yale's historic Battell Chapel for a private memorial service for Annie Le, the 24-year-old found strangled behind a wall in a school laboratory.

Yale President Richard Levin called Le "a model student for the Yale of the 21st century — a child of immigrants, raised in America, bright, accomplished, ambitious and disciplined, yet caring, loving and spontaneous."

Classmate Tara Bancroft recalled a brilliant, beautiful, funny and loyal friend, who could do surgery on a mouse in 5-inch heels, and put smiley faces on her presentations without losing anyone's respect.

Yale Community Remembers Annie Le
Updated 10:45 PM EDT, Mon, Oct 12, 2009

"She's such nice, sweet girl, very promising graduate student, and so it's such a tragedy," said Sean Xiaoyong, a Yale faculty member who only worked with Le on a few occasions.

The Yale community, like many others, is still grieving. But as they sat in the chapel with somber faces, they were greeted by Annie's smile. A picture of her was set up in front next to a single candle and pink roses.

The memorial service was filled with music and remembrance of a woman who was taken too soon. Each person who came to the podium shared memories of Annie. They called them "Annie-isms" and described the little things she would do each day.

It was one month ago, Tuesday, that the body of Annie Le was found in a lab building. The Yale University community held a service to remember the young woman lost to violence.

A small, solemn group of people slowly made their way up the steps to Battell Chapel. No bells were ringing and the quiet parade of folks went mostly unnoticed by the surrounding blur of activity in downtown New Haven.

The people that gathered were friends, some family, a few strangers -- all present to pay respects to a woman who made a lasting impact on the Yale community.

Yale University Honors Slain Student Annie Le At Memorial Service
10:35 p.m. EDT, October 12, 2009

The mood in Yale University's Battell Chapel was somber when about 150 friends, school administrators and students gathered for a memorial service Monday evening in honor of slain student Annie Le.

Emotion and a touch of humor were sprinkled throughout stories of Le's passion for fashion and schoolwork, and her devotion to using science to help people in need. Those in the audience spoke barely a word during the hourlong service, their heads down, some wiping away tears.

Widawsky and members of his and Le's families attended the memorial service; they were escorted to and from their pews by Yale police. The only family member to speak was Dan Nguyen, Le's younger brother, who recited the 23rd Psalm in Vietnamese.

Service honors Annie Le GRD '13

“Her outside beauty was no match for her inner beauty,” Le’s friend Tara Bancroft GRD ’14 said. An enlarged photo of Le’s smiling face stood at the front of the room.

Outside the chapel, all gates to Old Campus were locked and a Yale ID was required to enter. Police officers stood outside the Chapel to make sure no cameras were allowed inside. Police officers in dress uniforms, their badges and detailing shining in gold, led Le’s family and close friends into the chapel. Among the guests, who filled most of the center rows of the bottom floor of the chapel, were Le’s mother, Vivian Van Le, and Le’s fiance, Jonathan Widawsky.

The service opened with the music of Johannes Brahms, played on piano by Robert Blocker, dean of the School of Music. Pharmacology student Michelle Mo GRD ’14 played a haunting violin piece by John Barry that faded out with a striking high note.

Hundreds at Yale say goodbye to Le

She was eulogized as a fun-loving, fashionable young woman who would occasionally skip lectures to get a pedicure, and who could eat as much fried chicken as she wanted without gaining a pound.

Graduate student Tara Bancroft remembered her friend for her sense of humor and her joyful personality, as well as her sense of fashion.

Muffled crying was heard from parts of the chapel as Bancroft summed up her feelings.

“To our dear Annie, may you never die in our hearts. We love you now and forever. We pray that you have found eternal happiness in a place where designer handbags are plentiful, where there is a Popeye’s on every corner and there are no more diseases in which you spent your life finding a cure,” Bancroft said.

Attorneys to spar over sealed Annie Le file; former Yale lab tech due in court today

The arrest warrant, search warrant and other documents have been kept from the public ever since Clark’s arrest Sept. 17. A court order kept the file sealed, initially for 14 days. The period was extended to today’s hearing date after defense attorney Joseph E. Lopez filed a motion seeking an extension for an even longer, unspecified time.

The New Haven Register, New York Times and the Associated Press have joined the Courant in its motion. Superior Court Judge Roland Fasano will hear the legal arguments starting at about 2 p.m., but he is not expected to issue a ruling today.
