Mel Gibson

Well we have heard from the "naysayers" now the people with something positive to say are going to start trickling out. I predict a groundswell of support for Mel.

I wonder how his wife Robin is doing?

I agree. With his success I'm sure MG has made some good friends (including jewish) along the way. According to wikipedia "as of 2006 Gibson is estimated to be worth $850 million making him the 47th richest person in the LA area and the weathiest actor in the world."

I suspect his wife and children have been suffering like any family living with an alcoholic. Also according to wikipedia - "In 1991, Mel began treatment for alcholism at the urging of his agent Ed Limato and his wife Robyn who reportedly threatened to leave him if he refused."

He's a very troubled man, imo.

Mel Gibson link to Aussie anti-Semitic group

MEL Gibson once had close links to the Australian League of Rights, a Far Right group notorious for its anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and Holocaust denial.
The league claims the world is run by a secret society of Jews.
The Hollywood star's foray into Far Right activist politics in Australia occurred in 1987 when he campaigned for a friend, Rob Taylor, who stood unsuccessfully for the northern Victorian federal seat of Indi.

Money can't buy happiness, it was always that simple.

It can help...but sometimes it just makes a situation worse.

Poor Mel, with all his money, at the end of the day, he is doing no better than the junkie on the street.
His addiction could kill him just like it can anyone else.

The hero here is probably his long suffering wife for staying with him and putting up with him.
She has more than likely kept that family together.

narlacat: just the person and we posted at the same time!

wht do you say to the post i made directly above yours? considering it's Australia based?

i agree his wife must be long-suffering.

i don't agree anymore 'poor Mel'. but then again, i never did think 'poor Mel'. :slap:

money really doesn't help to round a person out, it would seem.

Hi Floh :)

To your above post I'd say
There are arseholes everywhere, Australia included.
I'm not though LOL :D

We even have our own little branch of the Ku Klux Klan from what I hear.
Scary.

Heck, yes - of course there are questionable folk everywhere and it wasn't a dig about Australia having this group. more a query about him having connections so far back right there.

as for far-right weirdos, the one who springs to mind as regards Australia is the infamous Pauline "Please explain" Hanson.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pauline_Hanson

Omg, you know who Pauline Hanson is lol
Sssshhhh :p
I've often gone to use that line on here, 'please explain' you have to say it really nasally because that's how she talked....but I thought it would be lost on most folk.
How embarrasing you know about her

I was in Australia for around 3 months, late 1996 - does that explain why i know of her? :)

plus, i'm a Briton and i think we possibly receive more news regarding Australia than America does as you're still a colony! j/k

anyway, as this is way off topic now, i'll move it back to on topic.

the reason i posted about the Australian right wing connection Mel had so long ago, even, and regarding their anti-semite lore, interested me.

Edited to add:

Now a bit more about The Australian League of Rights and their doings:

The League strongly denies that a Holocaust occurred during World War II in which millions of people, particularly European Jews were killed, and is strongly supportive of the polemicist David Irving.[1] They believe that the world is run by a secret society of Jews.[1] The League is distinctive for asserting that The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is a genuine Jewish document (the Encyclopædia Britannica for example describes the Protocols as a "fraudulent document that served as a pretext and rationale for anti-Semitism in the early 20th century").

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_League_of_Rights

The above seems to tally with Mel's assertion that fateful night, "... ing Jews. The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world", does it not? he was according himself with that group 19 years ago.

p.s. off topic again: as regards Pauline, i had fish & chips for dinner last night!

I was going to say, she should of stuck to cooking fish and chips for a living!

Mel's prior connections are probably just as shady as the next persons, we all have skeletons in our closets :p

Wonder how long it's been since he lived here, I always thought he was born here but someone on here told me he was born in NY, it was like...ok he's yours then :D

You're funny!

Yeah here I am apologising for him, and he's not even ours to apologise for ;) :D
I didn't realize he was the highest paid actor in the world either, seems I didn't know much about him at all :p

Here is a biography, pretty interesting actually.
He met his wife through a dating service!

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000154/bio

Funny how his son went to the University of Colorado in Boulder which is where the infamous Ramsey case happened in which certain lines were taken from the movie Ransom for the ransom note..

So he's responsible for the Ramsay case now? (j/k)

i had always thought 'Mel' would be short for 'Melvin' or something?

having read the link you provided, i think his full name would be enough to turn a saint to alcohol:

'Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson'??? :waitasec:

lol--so Mel has been associated with the Australian League of Rights--lovely---a group that is so ignorant, they don't believe that eleven million people were murdered in the death camps--that number also includes hundreds of thousands of little children murdered in the gas chambers---didn't realize Australians had ignorant, racist orginazations like our own Klu Klux Klan and Aryan Nation----Mel Gibson's kids must be so proud of him lol--

This article does not say he was a member. And these are who's words? The words of someone that wants his 15 minutes and press for his group.

Are you saying that you do not believe Gibson holds anti-semitic views? Or are you apologizing and excusing him because of his problem with substance abuse?

Mel Gibson was caught saying hateful remarks about Jews. It's in the police report.

I think Gibson has a deeply ingrained habit toward anti-semitism. He has likely struggled with that "demon" as well as the "demon" of alcoholism. When he relapsed he fell out of all control over that habit to think negatively of Jews and to speak hatefully.

He has taken all the right steps, going into rehab, making amends etc etc.

His situation is political because Mel is political with his relgiouusness. So now his defenders on the right and his detractors on the left are examing his "fall from grace" in light of the issues of the day.

Religion and poltics are mixed strongly at this time in the world. It is not surprising.

I am entitled to my opinion and impression of him as a man and, yes, I do believe that he screwed up big time, but that he doesn't need to be whipped to death. Of course I know he made the remarks. I am not apologizing for him and I am not excusing him. Why would I do that? I just think it's gross when every Tom, Dick and Harry starts running to the media and adding their 2 cents, thereby adding to the frenzy.

Like I said before, where was the outrage when the man killed the woman in Seattle (and wounded others), just because they were Jewish??:o

eta: I editted my post because I decided WOVC's post wasn't attacking me, maybe just asking a question.

Yes--

it was just a question. It is the context of this whole thing that makes it a big deal. He's famous. He is publically religious. He is political. He supports right wing causes.

And, you are certainly entitled to your opinion! :) We don't have to agree!

In reality, very few people (maybe just Mel) knows his heart.

And its interesting to see who gives him the benefit of the doubt and why and who does not.

I am not saying anyone's opinion is more accurate than anyone elses.

If you like Gibson, you feel friendly toward him, you overlook his flaws and exaggerate his positive side.

If you do not like Gibson, you do not overlook his flaws, you ignore his positive side and you exaggerate his negativity.

The whole thread IMO demonstrates this.

Very difficult to have an accurate view of anyone. To see their failings and positive characteristics without bias.

I do not like hate speech. Gibson's remarks leave a lingering bad taste behind. I admit to having bias against him.

I have bias against holocaust revisionists.

It is possible to start out with bias and come to some equal regard. To the extent that we are all human, I can have an equal regard and wish Mel Gibson happiness and freedom from suffering.

I would not choose to hang out with him, nor defend his indefensible behavior.

Earlier you say its not as if Gibson is a murderer. (which sounds like "it's no big deal, get over it).

Anti-semitism has resulted in large scale murder/ torture/ ethnic cleansing/ genocide in WWII Germany.

I have known survivors who managed to stay alive during their experience in the concentration camps so that the truth of what happened would be available for generations to come. So that no other person would suffer the same fate again.

Gibson's father is a known holocaust revisionist. Mel has said his father taught him about religion and has never lied to him.

I am sorry but its tough to "cuddle up" around Gibson's speech.
