Maybe he really didn't recognize his victim. He had the baby for 20 minutes, during which time he was riding a motorcycle and attempting to evade police. He killed the child out of panic, so it isn't such a stretch to believe he doesn't have the clearest memory of those 20 minutes.

The poor child murderer ... didn't recognize his victim after kidnapping and murdering him, sitting through a lengthy trial and knowing that the child's picture was plastered all over the news throughout the trial. He panicked and murdered a child he kidnapped out of his high chair after tying up the family? Sounds like we're ready to make him into a victim.

By all means, feel free to believe the testimony from lying, murderous prisoners that are spending the rest of their days behind bars. Tell me again that they are not really bad people just because they lied, robbed and murdered ... and when I refuse to adopt your opinion, you can tell me again that "It's been pointed out to you more than once" that being criminals doesn't mean they are liars. Perhaps these criminals did tell the truth when they were arrested ... because they might be honest murderers and criminals.

No one has defended the killing of a baby.

To my knowledge, no one has denied that the killer may have denied his involvement when he was arrested.

But here and now, in this case, you haven't been able to identify any incentive for him to lie. Maybe he has one, but nobody has discovered it thus far.

It's a prisoner circus that amuses Chris Mellas, and the defense has asked that the prisoner fantasies be entertained by the court. We can split hairs in an effort to distance the murderers from the prisoner circus, but no one other that the defense wants this testimony to be taken seriously.

Hellmann is not part of the Perugian legal establishment. He was brought in from another part of Italy after Perugia ran out of eligible judges. In fact, he's not even a criminal law judge; I think his main occupation is labor law or something of that sort.

This casts some doubt on the cynicism [. . . ] I don't see much reason for Hellmann to care about the reputation of the authorities in Perugia. For all we know, this whole case might be a laughing stock among lawyers in Turin, Milan, or Bologna, and Hellmann's reputation could just as easily be served by cleaning this mess up as opposed to covering for Mignini and Massei.

Exactly. So much for all the protestations of "serious" concern for justice for Meredith Kercher. And so much for admitting one's own mistakes, even though one is lightening-quick to condemn the mistakes of others!

It sounds like wishful thinking to expect that legal decisions are made based on the reputations of those trying the case - sure hope that people aren't jailed in order to make or break someone's legal career.

That could be the six prosecution witnesses. Are two prosecution prisoners going to disagree with the other defense five? Is Rudy required to answer the single question of whether he told the stories to the prisoners? Can we expect another circus atmosphere in the court with Raffaele's lawyer yelling at Meredith's lawyer?
