A QAnon-obsessed killer dad who allegedly used a spear gun to fatally shoot both his children was handcuffed and dressed in a prison-issued jumpsuit as he was indicted by a federal grand jury for the 'heinous, cruel and depraved' crime.

Matthew Taylor Coleman, 40, appeared in federal court in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday after he was charged with two counts of foreign first-degree murder of United States nationals. 'By law, the charges are eligible for death penalty,' the news release from the attorney's office read.

The new sketches illustrate the straight-faced Coleman standing for his hearing at a courtroom in the Royal Federal Building in downtown Los Angeles.

MC's initial federal case was dismissed and he's essentially starting over in the judicial process.

Following an indictment by the federal grand jury, his case initially filed in the Central District was dismissed/closed, and new charges and case number filed in the Southern District where MC appeared on 9/9 to hear the new charges against him. He did not enter a plea at the hearing. Also, his trial will be heard in San Diego.

Matthew Coleman Indicted for Allegedly Killing Kids Over QAnon Theories, Eligible for Death Penalty

Coleman is being held at a federal prison after his arrest, and PEOPLE learned earlier this month that he is being held in protective custody so that he doesn't interact with other inmates.

"He is in his cell about 23 hours a day," said a source with direct knowledge of his incarceration. "He only sees his public defender. And he can't have many personal effects in his cell. He's got nothing but a Bible."

Coleman has not yet entered a plea. The public defender's office has not returned PEOPLE's calls for comment.

Why was it dismissed and moved?

The accused was initially arrested and charged on a federal complaint (arrest affidavit) but his case was later sent to a federal grand jury. The GJ indicted MC on the same charges (eligible for the death penalty), and for reasons not disclosed, announced that the dept of justice determined the appropriate venue was the Southern District of CA.

SAN DIEGO – Matthew Taylor Coleman of Santa Barbara was indicted by a federal grand jury today for taking his two young children to Rosarito, Mexico and killing them.

Coleman, 40, allegedly killed the 2-year-old boy and 10-month-old girl on August 9, 2021. The indictment filed today charges Coleman with two counts of foreign first-degree murder of United States nationals.

Coleman previously was charged with the same crimes in a federal complaint filed in Los Angeles. Prosecutors intend to dismiss that complaint.

I thought Qanon was a political conspiracy group? This article states that Coleman believed his wife and kids were going to grow into monsters, serpent possessed or something!! He was saving the world by killing them? He stabbed them both so many times. Horrific. I pray they were drugged, and unaware of what happened to them! Sounds like Schizophrenia to me, if he truly thought they were growing into monsters.

I was wondering about him blaming QAnon and Illuminati.

He doesn't seem to fit the profile of someone who would be drawn to either of those.

I believe that this was premeditated murder. And that he also planned his defense, "insanity plea". He just chose QAnon and Illuminati because they are probably reviled in his "$anta Barbara" social circles.

I was thinking the exact same thing. When looking at his business page, where he lives, the statements about him, and the fact he had no references to the qanon thing on his FB or Instagram pages, makes me wonder about his story?

And I thought the qanon conspiracists were a political group, never heard of serpent DNA until here. Maybe they do believe in serpent DNA, I just never heard that before.

All these beautiful words as he keeps defining the specialness of his wife, and later his new born son. Called his family "my treasures" on Instagram. What keeps standing out to me is the incredible pressure his visions would've placed on his children to fulfill the destiny he was placing on them with his images and visions. Being a parent myself, I don't remember having such grandiose futures for my children. Why did he have so many expectations they would have to live up to? I don't know if he really felt anything, and he was always just spouting words. He took the children to a hotel and had plenty of time to come to his senses. Look at those little innocents. WTH did he see? Why did he choose to kill them in such a brutal way? Why? That's so many stab wounds for tiny children. How his son didn't die right away is unbearable to know. His visions in the future will not be pretty. JMO, but there's really no understanding this.
