A desperate search is underway for an Australian mother after she vanished in Mexico and her two-year-old daughter was found wandering the streets of Cancun.

Tahnee Shanks, 32, originally from the Whitsundays, Queensland, had been living in the Central American country with her partner Jorge Aguirre Estudillo and their two-year-old daughter Adelynn.

Tahnee had been living in Yucatán capital of Merida. She was waiting to receive her toddler's passport and had booked plane tickets to arrive in Australia on June 22.

her last contact was with her sister on the 30th of April, even more, concerning is that they found her daughter wandering the streets without her

Oh wow this gives me chills. This article also shows:

"As reported by the Mackay Daily Mercury, Shanks’ brother Dan said Adelynn was found wandering the streets of Cancun on Sunday evening after being left at a local church.

This is about 130km away from Tulum, a destination Tahnee was apparently heading to as part of short trip away with her daughter and ex-partner Jorge, who is Adelynn’s father.

Jorge is also reportedly missing".

MOO JMO at this moment I am wondering if something bad happened to both her and her BF, because - JMO again - I think (would hope that) even if the BF did something to Tahnee he would have kept the child with him.

I'm praying for her but have such a sinking feeling that I can't shake. Ugh.

that's an interesting take, the media here is focusing on Tahnee mostly, its a frightening situation though

later in the article it describes him as ex-partner

Two potential explanations spring to mind: the first is that the ex-husband is responsible for/involved in TS's disappearance, and the second is that both adults were victims of a crime (although that seems less likely to me, given the low likelihood that hitmen/cartel members/general-purpose murderers would take the time to drop off a surviving toddler at a church).

i think its Ex-Husband at least from what iv been able to gather, media really need to be clear when dealing with people titles and marital status

ABC news is saying that Tahnee and her partner recently had a messy breakup ... he got someone else pregnant. (They are quoting Tahnee's brother.)

Tahnee's partner said he would sign the papers for Tahnee to bring Adelynn home to Australia.
But then the messy breakup happened, and now Tahnee is missing and Adelynn is residing in state care while Tahnee's family try to get her out of there and bring her to Australia.

Our govt is now also involved.

(Tahnee's brother calls the partner 'her boyfriend'.)

In reading more today, it seems that they were away on holiday when Tahnee disappeared.

I hadn't realised before that little Addy was found outside a church in Cancun, but they lived in Merida (four hours away).

And that they were going on holiday to a little fishing village that was two hours away from Cancun, where Addy was dumped.

This map gives an idea of where Merida is in relation to Cancun. I don't know where the fishing village (for the holiday) would be, but it would not be enroute between Merida and Cancun.

Yeah originally I had the thread titled Cancun but I also picked up on that they actually lived in Merida, Yucatán
and then we got the story you are speaking about that they are actually travelling around

her brother was on sunrise yesterday and in the interview he gave he says he thinks that they have 3 witnesses that gave information suggesting it was Addy's father who dumped her at the church and they consider him " on the run"

Australian mother Tahnee Shanks missing in Mexico after her 2-year-old daughter found alone – CBS News
<snipped & BBM>
Prosecutors in the coastal state of Quintana Roo said Tahnee Shanks, 32, was last seen on Monday in Cancun. There was no immediate information on how she became separated from her daughter.

But on Thursday, prosecutors also issued a missing persons alert for the girl's father, Jorge Luis Aguirre Astudillo, a Mexican citizen. Aguirre Astudillo is also 32 and was also last heard from Monday.

[...]

According to her Facebook profile, Shanks, from Conway Beach, Queensland, had been trying to get back to Australia. Her plans were apparently delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.

Shanks wrote in May 2021: "I can't come back to Australia till mid 2022!!! My baby girl will be 2 1/2 years old and hasn't even met her grandad, uncles, great gran, cousins."

So now we learn that Tahnee and Addy (and Jorge?) were going to Tulum for their holiday.
And somehow Addy ended up 2 hours up the coast from Tulum, in Cancun.
I wonder if they ever made it to Tulum.
If Tahnee ended up in that ocean, it could be that they will never find her.

The article posted by SouthAussie above was updated 4 hours ago but I can't see any significant changes.

This one is paywalled, so I will paraphrase a bit.

It says Tahnee and Jorge had booked a hotel in Cancun, for one night, but started to travel back to Merida. While on the road back to Merida, they turned around and 'mysteriously' returned to Cancun. Then Addy gets left outside the church.

Police are analysing video and chronology of events.

Police are running tests on a burned out car that was found in Puerto Morelos (40 minutes south of Cancun) on the same day that Addy was found outside the church in Cancun.
The burned out car's serial numbers match the car that Tahnee and Jorge were driving.

Jorge has a bit of a past. Was deported from the US back to Mexico for attacking a US police officer.
Has DV complaints against him from a previous girlfriend in Yucatan.
He has a history of family abuse against another couple.

Article SBM. Sadly this doesn't sound like it's turning out very well at all.

that's not good news at all
i really hope this doesn't end like other stories around Mexico and Cancun

here is an un-paywalled article with the details Southaussie posted

why would they start heading toward home and then book a hotel in Cancun where they just left?

The BBM above makes no sense. Lost in translation perhaps? "Shanks’ brother Dan said Adelynn was found wandering the streets of Cancun on Sunday evening AFTER being left at a local church". So she was left at a church but then ended up wandering the streets?

A little more info from this new article (paraphrased).

Addy had no shoes on when she was dumped outside the church, but she smelled like 'baby soap', as if she had just been bathed.
She was found at 8pm, just after Mass had ended. It didn't seem that she had been wandering for long. The people who found her said she did not answer any of their questions, they wondered if she didn't understand Spanish very well.

Addy had a small flashlight in her hand, which she was playing with.

(This is being told by a man called Carlos Gutierrez, who appears to be one of the people who found Addy.)

Another man, Wilbert Canto, said when they first saw Addy wandering, a man was following her. The man asked Wilbert if they knew Addy. The man left, saying he would check the street behind to see if anyone knew Addy.
Wilbert and his family then took Addy and checked the nearby houses to see if anyone knew her.

Addy was not scared or crying.

Wilbert & family called the police, who arrived 30 mins later, and they took Addy and placed her in the care of "Attention to Victims of Family and Gender Violence" group who took Addy to a safe house.

Wilbert later realised (upon seeing photos) that the man following Addy had been Jorge.

As well, Tahnee had received Addy's Aussie citizenship, and was waiting on her passport - which was scheduled to be ready on 7th June (Addy has now been issued an emergency passport by Aussie authorities).

Their plane tickets to Australia had already been booked and paid for, flights scheduled for 22nd June.
