Five students were part of six search teams which walks acres of woods along I-94 in Kalamazoo County searching for clues into the disappearance on June 20, 2005 of Brandon Anderson, 21, of Battle Creek.

He was last seen running from a traffic stop just east of Galesburg Exit 88 and was never seen or heard from again.

Anderson was a passenger in an eastbound car which was involved in a hit-and-run accident near Kalamazoo early that morning and then struck the median barrier just east of the Galesburg exit.

Anderson and another man fled on foot.

Reed said for years investigators believed he ran north in Fort Custer but said the students found a statement from a Michigan State Police Trooper who believed he saw someone running south.

A second man who fled was apprehended on 42nd Street just south of East Michigan Avenue, which parallels the south side of I-94. Reed said several searches on the north side of I-94 were fruitless, so the students thought a search was warranted on the south side.
"It made sense to look where they haven't looked before," Reed said.

Police believe he likely died in the woods but his body was never found. Now a class at Olivet College has begun investigating cold cases, and the Anderson disappearance is one of them.

"It is just hard," said Anderson's mother, Felicia Watkins said by telephone, "It's like reliving it over again, but I am very pleased and I am very grateful. I have welcomed that someone took an interest in trying to find out what happened to him."

She has never stopped pushing investigators to learn the fate of her son.

"He is still missing and his mom still cares," she told the Enquirer earlier this summer. "I want to know where my son is. I want some answers"

Anderson had an infant daughter at the time, and so Watkins never believed he would just voluntarily leave.

How does someone just disappear? I wonder if they checked Fort Custer recreational park, the nearby military grounds and any water in the area...

If a neighbor heard something and they called 911 where would the call be routed to (Battle Creek or Kalamazoo)... This is a mostly rural area...

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. – A Battle Creek man disappeared 17 years ago after running into a wooded area near the Fort Custer Training Center in Kalamazoo County.

Brandon Darquice Anderson was last seen on June 20, 2005, at 1:45 a.m. He was a passenger in a Ford Taurus that collided with two other vehicles on I-94, near exit 88.

After the crash, Anderson crossed the highway, jumped over a fence and ran into a wooded area on the property of the Fort Custer Training Center. He hasn’t been seen since.

An extensive search of the area was conducted but no evidence was found. When he disappeared, he had a misdemeanor warrant out for his arrest. His mother speculated that he left the crash to avoid contact with police.

Anderson’s mother said he kept in regular contact with her and she fears foul play was involved.

Brandon D. Anderson is now on the Doe Network!

MOO - Brandon may have sustained an internal injury in the accident that slowly killed him. He may or may not have died in the woods, dependent on how long said theorized injury took to kill him (i.e. slow internal bleeding). He could have died while hiding out with someone and they didn't want to catch the heat (they would probably have warrants too, honestly) so they dumped him out somewhere.

Anderson, circa 2005

<<Anderson had a misdemeanor warrant out for his arrest and he had been drinking. He fled from the accident scene and ran into the woods by Fort Custer. He has never been heard from again and an extensive search of the area turned up no sign of him. The driver of the vehicle also fled, but he was apprehended not long after.

Anderson left behind an infant daughter. Although the circumstances of his disappearance are unclear, his mother believes he's deceased and police believe he died in the woods near the site of the accident. His case remains unsolved.>>
