I don't know which is worse. The pharmacist who watered down chemo that patients actually needed or this MD giving chemo to people who did not need it.

Patients blast Fata as 'evil,' 'greedy'

Oralandar Brand-Williams, The Detroit News 3:33 p.m. EDT July 7, 2015

Detroit — Former patients and family members lined up one by one Tuesday to confront Dr. Farid Fata, a local cancer doctor they said hurt them instead of helping to heal them.

In riveting and emotionally charged testimony, some victims and family members called the indicted oncologist "evil" and "a monster." They recounted how they or their loved ones were subjected to grueling chemotherapy and other medical treatments, sometimes given unnecessarily or in dangerously large doses...

DETROIT -
A judge plans to sentence Farid Fata to anywhere between 30 years and life in prison.

The Detroit-area cancer doctor is accused of a scheme to collect millions of dollars through unnecessary treatments. He pleaded guilty to fraud, money laundering and conspiracy. He will be sentenced on Friday. Fata's attorneys requested 25 years while the prosecution has been seeking 175 years.

In court on Thursday, most notable was how Fata has changed in the nearly two years since his arrest. He's lost weight and sits emotionless most of the time in court...

No live stream link yet, and local TV (NBC) is covering the Confederate flag removal. No cameras allowed in Federal courtroom, but WDIV is supposed to have camera crew outside for reaction to Fata sentencing.

Cancer doctor gets 45 years for 'huge, horrific' crimes

Oralandar Brand-Williams, The Detroit News 4:59 p.m. EDT July 10, 2015

Detroit — Once-popular local oncologist Dr. Farid Fata was sentenced Friday to 45 years in prison for a complex Medicare fraud scheme in which he gave cancer patients overly aggressive doses of chemotherapy while treating others with the powerful drug for cancers they did not have.

Shameful, I just wonder how much of this abuse of power goes on. I've believed for a long time that the cancer industry is more about making money than healing. As a retired RN, I've witnessed MD's abusing their power. I also worked in Oncology for several years, and struggled with the treatments used, and the fact that the drugs they use are so very toxic and dangerous, often more deadly than the cancer they are treating. I was happy to get out of it.

Then there's Big Pharma, they are the driving force behind this miscarriage of justice and needless loss of human lives. It's a multi-billion dollar industry though, and they're not about to give it up. Yet doctors are ultimately the ones that are responsible for the care and treatment of their patients. So it ends up being on them, they're the gods, after all. Or they think they are, they're treated as such, and they have the power. So I guess my only question is why is this the only MD that was caught and convicted. There are more. JMO

Detroit — The government restitution plan for victims of convicted cancer doctor Farid Fata was laid out in federal court Thursday as the disgraced physician looked on.

The plan would pay victims or their surviving relatives and would be split into two categories.

One would be pay for out-of-pocket expenses to those treated by Fata and the second would pay those who needed remedial medical treatment after being prescribed unnecessary drugs and treatments from Fata such as chemotherapy...

A Detroit-area cancer doctor is appealing his 45-year prison sentence for collecting millions from insurance companies while poisoning more than 500 patients through needless treatments that wrecked their health.

Farid Fata's appeal was filed Wednesday.

He was sentenced last month by U.S. District Judge Paul Borman. Borman heard stories of brittle bones and fried organs as patients chillingly described the effects of excessive chemotherapy at the hands of Fata. Borman called Fata's actions a "huge, horrific series of criminal acts." ...

Fata patient restitution hearing delayed six months

Oralandar Brand-Williams 5:03 p.m. EDT October 8, 2015

A hearing to get one step closer to restitution for patients of convicted cancer physician Dr. Farid Fata and their families has been delayed six months.

Lawyers are trying to set up a system to determine how to compensate those affected by the doctor’s mistreatment.

“There shouldn’t be a delay at all,” said Geraldine Smith Parkin, whose husband is a former patient of Fata.

“He took the money so ... patients should be reimbursed immediately,” said Parkin, who organized a support group for former patients and their families.

Parkin said the delay will prolong the pain and suffering for those affected by Fata’s crimes...

Fata whistleblower files new allegations in cancer case

Jennifer Chambers, The Detroit News 11:06 a.m. EST January 5, 2016

The whistleblower who helped convict and imprison former oncologist Farid Fata on Medicare fraud has filed an amended civil complaint with new allegations against new defendants, his attorney said.

David Haron, who represents whistleblower George Karadsheh, said the names of the defendants and the allegations are under seal while the government investigates the new claims which were filed on Dec. 28 in U.S. District Court in Detroit.

The civil complaint contains no allegations against Fata, who was sentenced to 45 years in prison in 2015 for giving chemotherapy to cancer-free patients while also over-medicating others. It was part of a wide-reaching health insurance scheme to bilk Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Medicare of about $34 million in insurance payments.

“I can’t talk about the new allegations and the new defendants,” Haron said. “I can’t discuss why or who or what. When it’s unsealed, it will be clear why we added them.” ...
