A minor thing (in comparison to this poor angels death) that strikes me is all of the empty lots in this trailer park.

I could fill in the blanks easily but I am more pragmatically interested in the actual evidence leading them to believe she was involved vs abducted or a victim as well. It is really easy for us to point at her and say "you should have known better" "you should have left him." but anyone who has been in an abusive relationship knows that isn't how that works especially if Fields was torturing her daughter in front of her. It takes support from the outside.

I realize other factors like addiction could be involved here so any sympathy for mom is hard-deserved. I wish these things didn't happen, I wish we had the practical answers for how to prevent it.

Bio dad's family have stated they never saw any injuries to Gabby prior to this. Furthermore, it's been reported that these two had an on and off relationship for the past 6 years. She should have kicked his sorry a$$ to the curb the first time they broke up.

She's just as responsible as he is for allowing her children to be put in harms way.

Thank you. As a domestic abuse survivor..... seeing such excuses makes my head want to explode. The police have to have evidence that SHE ALSO tortured Gabby or there wouldn't be a charge of first degree murder against her as well.

Mom’s FB still works for me. I was surprised how many of her posts are pics of guns — weapons. But a lot of lovely pictures of her with Gabby, too.

Boyfriend seems to have a young daughter, too... older than Gabby. I hope she has strong support because this will be tough for her emotional well-being as she grows up.

The 2016 incident. So, the uterus confessed to owning the firearms, including one with the serial number removed (felony), crack pipes, Xanax, hydrocodone, and a blank rx pad. This AFTER the bf shoots the dog, cuts himself to make it look like he was shot, and beats the crap out of the uterus.

Despite convictions for both Diaz and Fields, and the filthy and dangerous conditions of the home, there were no Child Protective Services cases open against either of them.

Parental hearing set for 2 over death of girl, 4

Sumpter Township Police said Wednesday the extradition process has started for the couple accused in the death of a 4-year-old girl.

Candice Renea Diaz, 24, and Brad Edward Fields, 28, are currently being housed in a Georgia county jail and authorities have started the process of transferring them to Michigan to face charges in the death of Gabrielle Renea Barrett, Police Chief Eric Luke said in a statement.

Luke said there is no timetable for the process to be completed and the department will not release any further information about the case. He referred future requests for information to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.

Meanwhile, state officials have begun legal proceedings to sever the couple's parental rights to Diaz's other daughter and Gabrielle's half-sister. A hearing on the state's petition is scheduled for Jan. 25 in Wayne County Circuit Court...

The Washtenaw County Medical Examiner told police that Gabrielle's death "was the worst child death case" he had seen in 27 years of practice, according to the documents.

The state's court petition also said both Diaz and Fields have criminal histories. Diaz is on probation for 2016 convictions for carrying a concealed weapon and possession of prescription forms. Fields has convictions for interfering with a police investigation, third-degree retail fraud and carrying a concealed weapon.

I imagine it is true in Michigan as it is in MN. Lawmakers make the rules as to CPS. The public does not want to pay the taxes to put these children in foster homes. Rather the reunification idea was born.

As a teacher that went on home visits, we were not allowed to use our standards as to what a clean home meant. However, threats to health sych as feces were reportable.

It made me sick as to what is allowed. The public must demand different laws. The idea is that poverty is not criminal. I agree, but abuse, feces, urine, are not poverty.

You are somewhat on point here. Signs of Safety was adopted as a standard protocol for Children's Division and all affiliates/contracted workers not too long ago. You can google it and check it out if you want. The focus is on keeping the children in the family home safely, when possible. What went on in 2016 with those kids being allowed to stay in the home was wrong and should have never happened. And you are right, it is cheaper to keep the children in the home.

Not only do Gabby's burns not match Diaz' description, how does she explain the extensive bruising all over her body?

Claiming mental health issues? Fine, let them both get their meds and counseling in prison. No problem.

She also had bruises all over her body and severe "burns on her legs from the knee down, on her buttocks, posterior to both elbows," it said.


In the petition, state officials said police told them Gabrielle was so badly burnt, one of her big toes fell off her body.


According to the state, Michigan State Police investigators found "a large amount of melted skin in the bathtub drain."
