Ok, let me ask a different question. If you lived in Monroe, didn’t go to the college in Ypsi, didn’t work or have family or friends there, what would take you to Ypsi? Aside from the college, any particular draw?

Absolutely nothing.

With those circumstances, a person would be more likely to go to Toledo, Detroit, and MAYBE Ann Arbor. St. Joe’s hospital is in Ypsi, so it’s possible someone would venture to Ypsi if they prefer that health system over the local Monroe health system and/or health systems in Toledo. Ypsi isn’t really a town that people in Monroe venture to unless there is a reason.

Eastern Michigan University has always had a significant number of commuter students who don't reside on campus but travel daily or several times weekly from neighboring communities. This is in contrast to the University of Michigan down the road about 7 miles from Ypsilanti. U of M has many more out-of-state students than EMU, and Ann Arbor offers much more than Ypsi in terms of shopping, dining, culture, entertainment, etc. There isn't really a lot to see or do in Ypsilanti, and EMU is often called a "suitcase college" because even students who live on campus travel home most weekends.

So then, it was likely Julia was traveling back to Monroe most weekends, unless she was working at Walmart...or wherever she was working around the time of her death. I believe on those weekends, "home" was then her grandmother's vs. the Turnquist home at that point, if I understand correctly.

I'm interested in knowing who from Monroe would go visit Julia, aside from her family. And who did they take with them...as in boyfriend, etc.

Whoever they are, they had/have the keys to her room because they took them. Another reason I lean towards someone who knew her because it was stated that she kept her keys on a certain lanyard and her keys to her room were missing from that.

I agree with this. She knew them, or at least recognized them I speculate. I have heard that Ypsi LE is dedicated to solving this case, and I 100% believe they will.

Thinking about Chelsea Bruck, whose sister was/is best friends with Julia's twin; so much time went by when she was missing without what seemed a possibility of finding her. Then one day suddenly, she was found. Then one day suddenly, her Perp was arrested in connection with another crime, and then charged in Chelsea's murder. When it seemed all hope was fading...the most miraculous set of circumstances brought that case to closure...against all odds.

It's cases like Chelsea's that confirm my belief in angels. I firmly believe they intervened in Chelsea's case, and I believe they will in Julia's as well. I'm ready for another miracle; bring it on angels!

I didn't live in Monroe, but I lived in Ann Arbor for almost ten years. I think I ventured there from out of town more than most people; 5-6 times the whole time I lived in Michigan. Once I drove there out of curiousity, another time I drove there to take a better look at Depot Town, another couple times I went because there was an awesome, giant thrift store (Valu-City?), either looking for hidden gems of vintage clothes or things I could use for a costume party, and one other time I looked up addresses associated with John Norman Collins/the Michigan Murders and drove around looking at those. There really isn't a huge amount to bring anyone there from out of town.

I agree. Did you know Chelsea’s murderer was found from a new law Michigan enacted where they take dna from anyone arrested? Her murderer was also just convicted in another case for rape.

Thanks Roses...... Interesting article about DNA testing.

Thank you, Trojan1966. Sending you and yours love and still in awe of your strength and perseverance as you seek to know who tormented and murdered your gorgeous smart hardworking young grand-daughter, who was striking out in this world so strong, at the time.

Skigirl, thank you for sharing this, though I've never been there, your, BDE and Spellz views illuminate my understanding of the places and facts of Julia's case.

I think rosesfromangels has it right. It's just a matter of time. To me, it seems like time is folding on itself and still more light is shining on that Tuesday night they found Julia and whomever stalked her place around that time, the sparse exams' weekend she was murdered.

Thinking about Julia this morning, and knowing that ultimately it is going to be the DNA studies that will bring justice.

I found an older article from the DOJ that really illustrates why it takes so long to get these studies done. It references Pres. Bush, but the info is still true today.

Along with accelerating cleanup of backlog, and new technology such as Parabon and others, the Perp should be shaking in their boots.
They should expect to have their door kicked in soon.

Arrested for a felony, not just any arrest.

Hello all, I am new to this forum, and greatful I found it. My name is Marko, I am from Serbia, major at criminology, graduating in 4 months of time. I took interest in this case, and made some deductions on my own but those deductions won't be right if the facts I have about the case were wrong.
I heard about this case on reddit, and took interest in it, wasn't the first time I took interest in a cold case, I even did a investigation on a cold case in Serbia. I called the Ypsilanti police and had a 15 min conversation with detective Annette Coppock, obviously she couldn't tell me much about the case since that is not allowed outside the force of the YPD, which I was aware but still I took a chance. Anyways, my thoughts and how this tragic event occured ( even tho I need more information to confirm) before I say anything , I would like to ask You all, do You know the time of death? So my theory is that this murdered was sloppy but "fairly" organized, I don't think the lock was locked from the inside of the appartment, I think he used the keys to leave the apparment casually and lock the door.I imagine other people live there? Lots of noise would be made from what happened, trauma on her tongue was probably from him putting her unconscious(hitting her very hard with an item or well, fist), I don't think the keys were his trophy like the FBI said...OR let's say she knew the attacker and she let him in, he hit her by surprise and made her unconscious and did what he did next (at which point it wouldn't make much noise).. The latex gloves, of course he will leave them there since he knew the fingerprints won't be found(taking the fact that he maybe heard someone from other appartments and panicked, so he wouldn't want his bloody latex gloves with him), the dna that was found made me think of something very clever but it is a longshot, if they really found 2 DNA samples on the gloves, I don't know if you knew people but if you had a bone marrow transplant you would have 2 dna samples in your body, one is of course yours and the other one is the donor of the bone marrow. I proposed this theory to Det. Coppock. I would really like to help more to solving this case and many more that I will find on this remarkable forum. I need facts and what was found in the appartment , but not imaginary facts, real facts. And one more question was the rant about the purple rug true at all?
I have lots and lots of theories about the case I just need information to see if I am right or wrong.
Was it a forced entry or was there no evidence of force entry?
The only information I trully need is the time of death and the time that crime was committed, and I could continue with my work and hopefuly help you find the murderer.
What I do I don't do for credit or reward, I just want to help people since I have proven myself already once that I am cabable of doing this.

Welcome to Websleuths, Sherlock221b ! Thank you for giving some time and thought to Julia’s case. Without digging back through posts and all my notes, I will try to give you some answers to your questions. Hopefully Julia’s grandfather (Trojan) will check in and be able to confirm or correct my answers for you.

I would like to ask You all, do You know the time of death? time of death and the time that crime was committed .
I don’t believe we (as in the public) have a specific time of death. She was found @ 9:30 pm on Dec 11, 2012. Last time she was seen? She apparently had a date the night before, the person was cleared. She had lunch with her sisters Dec. 9th, talked by phone and texted her twin that evening (@ 10:30 pm?).

Hopefully, grandpa can confirm these dates.

Was it a forced entry or was there no evidence of force entry?

no sign of forced entry

And one more question was the rant about the purple rug true at all?

There was a purple rug in the bathroom. However, after her items were removed by family and put in storage, the rug seems to have disappeared and police never recovered it. Not clear if family actually saw the rug.

In regards to the time of death, I don’t know that anyone truly knows. The Wayne county coroner would have given the police an estimated time narrowed down to hours. That has never been released publicly. I do know the last time Julia was heard or seen from was that Sunday two days before being found on Tuesday. Her roommate heard her alarm clock going off on both Monday and Tuesday morning. I think we can presume that she was killed somewhere between Sunday night and Monday morning just from those facts. I remember reading that the family did not see the purple rug, but don’t quote me on that. I will read back over the articles later today and see if I can find that anywhere. I know it was stated that her room was found in disarray and items were missing. LE has never stated if they thought her room was staged as a robbery. Again, I’ll post some links later when I’m free so we can fact check what we do know since it’s been over 5 years now.

Edited for typos

I just came across a recent podcast on the case. The format is sort of strange, as every advertisement is read in the same monotone as the “story”. I don’t see a way to pause, forward, etc., either. [oops ... look down the page, it’s there in black]

For Spellbound...........

The date she had lunch with her sisters was on Sunday, December 9, 2012. I think she did talk to her sister after 5PM on that Sunday. No one heard from her or received any texts or message on December 10th (Monday). Her body was found about 9 or 9:30 PM Tuesday December 11, 2012. Everything seems to point to the early morning (midnight to 4AM) on that Monday (Dec 10th) as to the time of death. I have a copy of the Death Certificate and it says for "Date of Death" - on or after December 09, 2012. Then for the "Actual or Presumed Time of Death" - Unknown.
I hope this helps.

Thank you, Trojan1966. Here's hoping 2018 is when we know more of who, what and when happened to Julia. She's front of mind for so many, but you and yours of course most of all.

Please, let me welcome all the new websleuthers to this thread, including Sherlock and Mitten. You're in great hands on the facts with Trojan, Spellz, roses, monster12, et al...

Thank you [emoji5] I have a new ws name, but have been around ws for a while. I’ve followed this thread, mostly when Julia was first taken from this world. I pray that 2018 is her year of justice. We got justice for Chelsea and some thought that would never come. I am forever hopeful that we have answers for Julia.
