YPSILANTI, Mich. - Eastern Michigan University said Friday it has agreed to pay $350,000 in fines to the U.S. Department of Education, largely over the school's cover-up of the rape and killing of a student in her dorm room.

The agreement by the Ypsilanti school sets the fines lower than the $357,500 proposed in December by the department. The fines are for violating the federal Clery Act requiring schools to accurately disclose campus security information.
.....
The case led to the firing of university President John Fallon. It also led to the ouster of Vice President Jim Vick and safety Director Cindy Hall.

After Dickinson's body was found, university officials told her parents and the media that she died of asphyxiation but that there was no sign of foul play, despite evidence to the contrary. It wasn't until February 2007, when Taylor was arrested, that her family and fellow students were told otherwise.

The university also has said it paid Dickinson's family $2.5 million in a settlement but did not admit wrongdoing.

Oh I am so glad to hear that there was a penalty applied.. though its not enough but its a start and perhaps now there will be better more clear communication between administrations, campus security, and the students when there are similar crimes committed on a campus. There is no excusing what they did here nor their failure to protect this girl. But to lie and cover it up is criminal.

I'm glad the school had to pay, also! They not only did not protect this girl and lied to her parents, but they failed to protect every other female on that campus while the 🤬🤬🤬 was running loose. AND they lied to every person on that campus! Unexcusable. They admitted "no wrong doing." Weak, very, very weak!
