Hoping that the truth of what happened to this angel is discovered quickly and the responsible party(s) are taken off the street. Dangerous individual(s)...

From MsF mlive link-there is an interesting comment from Ricochet who mentions a parolee living near the family's home...

R.I.P Beautiful Angel!
So sad to hear this news but locals here predicted it. As it was pointed out, no other children were missing at this time that matched and the timing and area was just too close. I truly hope this case will stay in the news until this beautiful baby gets justice!
Also, I hope this is a wake up call to all parents. We have to protect our babies at ALL times and not leave it up to others. YOU ARE THE PARENT! I dont care if you live in a home with 50 relatives, you care for your own. And mothers need to stop having babies and dealing with man after man and having all of these different men around your children. I know times are hard but birth control is easy to come by and , last I checked, morals and values are free!

Not to put down this mother or single her out but why be unemploed, keep having kids out of wedlock with men who arent in the picture(as if being in the picture is an option), live in a tiny overpacked house surrounded by drugs and then get drunk while you have four kids under five in your care and leave all your responsibilities in the wind.
Im disgusted.
THIS BABY DESERVED MORE!
My husband and I were born and raised in detroit and watched the city sink.
We struggled as a young couple and had plenty of cards stacked against us but we worked hard and put off havi.g ourkid til we could afford to have them. When our neighborhood went down and our childs bedroom window was randomly shot out, that was it. We pay more to live in a safer suburb and we cut back to do it while all our friends in detroit drive nice cars, we drive our 15 yr old van but oir faughter is much safer!

Sorry for the spelling, long nails on droid.

Thanks for sharing your Motown story. I left the family home in Detroit for college in 1968. By the time I graduated in 1972, my widowed mother and younger siblings who still lived at home had moved out of our childhood home because the city had already started the downward spiral that continues today. Mariha - and so many others like her - deserved a better life.

Funeral home flooded with donations for 5-year-old Mariah's services

Josh Katzenstein/ The Detroit News

In 40 years working in the funeral business, James Pelzer has never seen a memorial garner as much attention as the one planned for 5-year-old Mariah Trenice Smith, who died last Sunday.

"Everyone is stopping in to see what they can do," the owner of Peace Funeral Home said Monday. "Everyone wants to play a role"...

Reward Offered In Mariah Smith Case

DETROIT -- A $2,500 reward is being offered by Crime Stoppers in an effort to track down who is responsible for the death of a 5-year-old Detroit girl.

Shortly before Smith's body was discovered on July 24, a man, shown in a gas station surveillance video, bought $20 worth of gas, but only pumped 41 cents worth into a beer can. Police said they want to identify the man because he's suspected of helping set the girl's body on fire to cover up her killing.

Investigators said Mariah's aunt failed a lie detector test, but no charges have been pressed.

BBM - So the investigators said her aunt failed the poly. So far I had only heard that her family said she failed it.
Interesting. To say the least.

Just got caught up on this case as have been away from ‘puter for several days. How terribly sad. The mothers story does not make sense but I know several party moms who often lose a lot of details and just fill in the blanks. I keep wondering if a dead child was taken from the home or a live one.

RIP little Mariha

Hearing they are putting out a reward makes my stomach clinch a bit. I really hope this isn't an omen that the investigation has stalled.

Might not be but when they start putting out rewards---it happens quite often that it does. JMHO

$2,500 does not sound like a whole lot but to some it's a fortune. I'm hoping somebody knows something and really needs that money.

I just hope they arrest whoever is responsible quickly. This story is so sketchy it is difficult to tell if family is involved, its a stanger abduction (putting further children at risk) or just what happened.

May LE act swiftly to catch this those responsible.

BBM. Your post gives me the courage to say what I so hoped I'd never even think: That a relative or individual who attended the party the night prior to Mariha's disappearance/death is responsible. So far, despite pleas from Mariha's mother, no one has come forward about the man in the BP video or with any information about who might have abducted and/or murdered the little girl.

Mariha's grandmother, Diane Henry, commented in an early interview that her daughter (the one who failed the polygraph) might have been afraid of someone and couldn't tell what she knew for that reason. Maybe the family thought that she would talk when she was out of jail, but apparently that hasn't happened yet.

I hope and pray that this does not end up like other cases that we've seen involving abductions or murders going unsolved because no one will talk.

Since the person who purchased the gas used a beer can as a container, I wonder if the beer was the same drank at the party? Or if the beer can was found in the home where Mariha's body was found.

Also wondering why LE believes there was more than one person involved in setting the fire at the house.

I too am praying this case is solved quickly.

It's probably on the other thread (billions of posts) but I am on lunch break and don't have time to look through it all... Does anyone know why the aunt was arrested? (that is what they meant by "holding" isn't it?)
