MI MI - Tamara Greene, 27, Detroit, 30 April 2003

Wow ... shaking head ... just .... Wow ...

http://www.detnews.com/2005/metro/0510/30/A01-365796.htm

Detroit News investigation raises serious questions about the handling of absentee ballots under Detroit City Clerk Jackie Currie as the city prepares to choose a mayor, City Council and school board Nov. 8.

Currie has been accused of irregular election practices in several lawsuits, and a review of election results, property records and databases of registered voters uncovered procedures that experts and other election officials described as questionable.

Among findings by News reporters were ballots cast by people registered to vote at abandoned and long-demolished buildings; a master voter list with 380,000 incorrect names and addresses -- including people who have died or moved out of the city; and a practice of hand-delivering ballots from senior citizens and disabled voters that were filled out in private meetings with Currie's paid election workers.

-----
Currie refused to explain any of the problems uncovered by The News or outlined in court cases.

She, along with her deputy, Vernon Clark, denied there are any problems with the vote in Detroit.

"Prove it," Currie said. "P-R-O-V-E."
---
State law requires cities and townships to turn in election results to the county by 11 a.m. the morning after the election, and 42 of Wayne County's 43 municipalities complied. But Detroit's results were not turned in until nine days after the election, Jenkins said.

That sounds like a dare to me. Someone should take her up on it.

ETA: I'm sure anyone trying to prove it ran into the same obstruction the prosecutor did.

Or a bullet in their head.

It is really sad because the Govenor (Granholm) and Attorney General (Mike Cox) all supported Kilpatrick. It really makes you wonder why Michigan is going to Hell in a handbasket. Mike Cox has came out and said there was NO party and it was an urban legend. Now he has to back track. I cannot wait until the other shoe drops. I really wonder how deep this mess is. It is really sad for the state. :(

Just be thankful that you do not live in the mess that is called Michigan. The economy is just so scary here. I just really hope this is a beginning point for the state going forward and politicians to quit ripping off the innocent tax payers.

Highest foreclosure and second highest unemployment rate in the country is very scary.

Well, I'm glad I don't live there simply because of the cold.. brrrrrrr. I don't like cold. But anyway, the only other thing I really know about Michigan is here in N.C. we always see these great ads for Michigan's Economic Development with that actor - is it one of the Bridges - Jeff Bridges? - I can't recall his name right now - in it talking about companies relocating or starting up their businesses in Michigan. The commercials look nice and I always wish we could get some well-known actor to do those type of commercials for N.C.

Locally, we've had our own "mess" in the police department and city government in Greensboro. A well-known author, Jerry Bledsoe, has been doing articles for a local paper spilling all the details and bloggers are going nuts over all the sex, prostitution, investigations, firings of the police chief, race debates, city attorneys and staff not releasing reports and then they're leaked to local bloggers, etc. It's a mess, but not nearly so big as Kwame's appears to be in Detroit.

Tamara Greene's death sent a message, that's for sure. Mike Cox explained his final report, IIRC and paraphraising, on the party as having interviewed the only people he needed to (the one's who were there) and everyone denied it. Well duh, they are the one's who had the biggest reason to deny it.

Thanks Less!

This really is sad for Michigan and Detroit. I just don't see how they can move on without Kilpatrick resigning. This will impact tourism and any revitalization investments. Who would want to invest in the future of this city with this crap hanging over it's head?

Also, although I'm afraid to bring this up out of fear of being pushed into the political forum. (Hey Mods ... we really are discussing a murder and crimes here.) I wonder if this will unconsciously have an impact on voters views of Obama. The Kilpatricks are not the first African American politically corrupt family ... the Fords of Tennessee come to mind. Anyway, Obama may have well on his way to creating his own dynasty. His wife's salary tripled in one year and there's the Rezko connection and a small real estate matter at his south-side mansion. Which the media seems to be conveniently not looking at.

Just pondering.

I do not think he looked to deeply into it. He trusted the word of Kwame and that was his first mistake. I do not think Kwame would know if the truth if it hit him in the head or danced naked and got the crap beat out of it by his wife and her louisville slugger.

I know some of Kwames supporters are saying that people are just afraid of a powerful black man. However, I would not put Kwame and Obama in the same catagory. Kwame has always acted like he was better then anyone else and it is his personality that has always turned me off to him. I could care less if he was white, green, orange, purple I do not like him as a person. I do not get the same feeling from Obama. He seems like a normal guy, however if he started showing up with a huge diamond in his ear and acted like he was above everyone else, I will not like him.

I think I am just starting not to like politicians in general. :(

Is it Jeff Daniels? Actually Michigan is beautiful if you can see past our bad economy and bad reputation. I am hoping that times will get better...it has to, right?

And you are right it is so cold I am wondering if it will ever stop snowing...we are suppose to get more tomorrow. :(

Well, I think a number of Obama's actions have show him to be incredibly politically naive. Absolutely genuine, but so was Jimmy Carter, and look where that got us.

Anyway, for me with Kilpatrick, it's not the whole "hip-hop" deal, but the I'm following in Chicago's Mayor Richard J. Daley deals that concerns me. I'd take a flamboyant hip-hopper over a corrupt politician any day ... combine them and EEK!

I believe from what I was reading, this was the SECOND set of attorneys, she fired the city attorney's and hired another firm to represent her personally ... which the city is now paying for.

The council approved $101,000 in legal fees stemming from a lawsuit over former City Clerk Jackie Currie's distribution of absentee ballots. Detroiter Maureen Taylor sued Curry and the city in 2005 over the way the clerk handled the election. Curry mailed absentee ballots to people who did not ask for them.

I would pay to see that.

Jeff Daniels..... That's right!!! I like him. I guess he's a native Michigan-ian, Michiganite, Michiganer. Sorry, I don't know the correct term. I've heard that Michigan is very beautiful and I'm sure it is. But sometimes even North Carolina is too cold for me!!! I'm a whiney baby about that, I guess. I don't ever want it to drop below 70 degrees!!! We had one small dusting this winter, about 1 inch. And that's all the snow I've seen this year. Which made me happy!!

I hope things turn around for ALL our economies. In the meantime, I'm really interested in reading what's going on there. I hope the Mayor gets his due and SOON!

It may not be illegal. But I bet those employees want to keep their jobs and contractors want to stay in business. Unbelievable!

http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/15716431/detail.html

Rescue 4 has learned from sources close to Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick that a legal defense fund is in the works for the mayor and will be set up soon.

City employees are being asked to give between $100 and $1,500.

And city contractors are being asked to give between $10,000 and $100,000. (more at link)

http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/15715871/detail.html

New documents in the Tamara Greene slaying case may shed light on solving the slain stripper's death.

The new documents mandate the city to hand over all the identifications or pin numbers to all the SkyTel pagers issued to all city employees by Friday.

The next step could be obtaining all city employee text messages sent the night Green was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting. Greene, 27, allegedly danced at the Manoogian Mansion party and was later killed. City officials deny that party ever happened. The homicide remains unsolved. (more at link)

I'm thankful for all the information and links that Golfmom and Suzi have been giving, too. Just lurking here, nothing new to add, it's all so mind-boggling! And, while I live in Michigan, I don't live in Detroit and am not aware of the "word on the street", or else I'd be piping in with some comments, too! Keep it coming, gang, it's appreciated! :blowkiss:

:bang: .. yet ANOTHER classic Richard J. Daley move. It's like Kilpatrick found Daley's mayoral playbook.
