Prosecutor to oppose judge picked for Detroit mayor's court hearing
Paul Egan / The Detroit News

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office will oppose the selection of 36th District Judge Ronald Giles to preside over the preliminary examination of Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff, Christine Beatty, scheduled for June, a spokeswoman said today.
......
Giles was selected by blind draw to handle the preliminary examination, a spokeswoman for 36th District Court Chief Judge Marylin Atkins said today.

But Maria Miller, a spokesman for Prosecutor Kym Worthy, said Worthy wants to disqualify the entire 36th District bench from handling the preliminary examination. Worthy believes a visiting judge should handle the case to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest, she said.

*Bolding is Mine* For those who aren't familiar, Lansing is our state Capitol. Remember though too, Granholm isn't very well liked either. For awhile there was a BUNCH of impeach Granholm signs floating around LOL*

Just the other day I saw a bumper sticker that said "DEPORT GRANHOLM". She really doesn't seem to be held in high regard here.

Thanks all of you for keeping this thread alive with updates!

Thanks for the info JJ. I had no idea the gov was so disliked! Can you elaborate as to why?

lets see -

Our Foreclosure rates
Our Schools - She wants to start new programs instead of concentrating on what we have on hand.
Our Economy
The business Tax (Was going to tax businesses which in turn made many of them move out)
Her negligence in coming up w/ a budget
Hell - just our state in general? LOL

Or as one petition lined it up? -

The values of homes are on a deep decline, people are losing jobs, homes, and taxes are on the rise again!!! Governor Granholm is killing Michigan. Is her goal to have no one left in the state to collect taxes from???

Seriously though, these are some of the reasons cited. I can get into specifics about the above if you are interested....

I was on realtor.com and saw at least a dozen homes in Detroit listed for $1,000 or less.

Kilpatrick and Granholm:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jennifer_Granholm

Kilpatrick memo
Shortly before the 2002 gubernatorial election, a memo was released to reporters from Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick addressed to Granholm. It asked that in exchange for his support and Detroit votes, Granholm must provide jobs and appointments for Detroiters. The memo proposed numerous specific ways that Granholm could help if elected, including ensuring that 20% of new political appointees were African-American. Granholm’s opponent, Republican Lieutenant Governor Dick Posthumus, publicly denounced the “corrupt pact” between Kilpatrick and Granholm. Granholm said that she had never seen the memo, and she stated that she would never “respond to those kinds of demands.” In addition, Kilpatrick said he had not written the memo or signed off on its terms.[21]

The 36th District Court judge randomly picked to conduct the preliminary examination of Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and Christine Beatty contributed at least $300 to Kilpatrick's campaign fund in 2006, but said he would be fair.

"It won't have any affect" on the June 9 hearing, Judge Ronald Giles said Monday. "Although I know the mayor, I know him like most people know him. ... We're not friends. I've never even had a conversation with him."

Members of Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's city hall staff, including a cousin, have launched an e-mail campaign to encourage Detroiters to "push back" against what they contend is unfair media coverage of the mayor.

You know it's bad when the unions stop backing the mayor.

http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080401/NEWS01/80401060/1001/NEWS

All 18 local presidents in the City of Detroit’s largest employee union want Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to resign in the wake of the text-message scandal.

Leamon Wilson, chairman of the 18 AFSCME local presidents whose members work for the city, said leaders think Kilpatrick should quit because the possibility of him being forced from office by eight felony charges will undermine upcoming collective bargaining talks.

It may actually be beneficial to hold off on the civil suit ... more stuff could come out during the criminal case that could be helpful during the civil suit. I wish that they wouldn't gag, but I can kind of see where it may prevent Kilpatrick and Beatty from getting a fair trial if things kept leaking . . .

http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080401/NEWS01/80401057

Attorneys for the City of Detroit are asking for a gag order in a federal lawsuit brought by the son of slain stripper Tamara Greene.

The lawyers are also asking that the civil case be halted until the criminal case against Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff Christine Beatty concludes.

phffffttttt . . . . but the excuse that they're giving for a gag is to not compromise the investigation of Tamara's death. Well whatever, since it was sent over to the cold case before a year was out, I have no confidence anyone is really investigating her murder. Maybe if State Investigators or the FBI took over the case ...

"Given the fact that disclosure of the facts and information gathered by the Detroit Police Department to date concerning the Greene matter could seriously compromise the ongoing police investigation into Greene's death, Defendant City of Detroit respectfully requests that this Honorable Court stay the instant civil proceedings until the Detroit Police Department has had an opportunity to attempt to develop leads which have only recently been given to the department," Crittendon said.

Kwame has hidden way too much to have any sympathy garnered for him. AND let him do a change of venue, We'd love to have him out here in the 'burbs to have him on trial!!

Well, I'm sure you know all about those white, suburban juries.

The trial ended on September 11, 2007, after three hours of jury deliberation, in a verdict awarding the plaintiffs $6.5 million in damages. In an angry speech in front of City Hall made minutes after the verdict was read, Kilpatrick blamed the "wrong verdict" on white suburbanite jurors. In a separate article, Kilpatrick is quoted as saying, "There's race in this, and we run from it in this region. And I think it's impossible for us to move forward as a region without confronting it head-on. But I don't want what has happened in the past 24 months to be erased by what has happened in the last two days."

What are Kwame and his lawyers thinking? Kwame's support drops considerably when he steps outside Detroit.
