MI MI - Tamara Greene, 27, Detroit, 30 April 2003

Who is this woman? She's accusing Stefani of putting a gun in the face of the city and the settlement as a stick up!

A member of the City of Detroit's pension board filed a police report Thursday against City Council President Pro Tem Monica Conyers, claiming she threatened him with a gun at a board meeting earlier in the week.
.............
Milton told Conyers that the board already had determined it could not afford to fund the study. "It just blew from there," said Kneeshaw, who was elected to the position by city employees.

"There was threats made. There was vulgar language," Kneeshaw said. "And it wasn't DeDan Milton's fault. She was ranting and raving."

Milton filed a report with Detroit police at 12:48 p.m., saying she verbally attacked him and had to be restrained.

Conyers "then threatened to shoot the victim with her gun," the report states.

Wait a second . . . I'm puzzled as to Beatty's link between perjury charges in the Whistleblower lawsuit and the civil suit for the city's non-investigation of Tamara Greene's death.

Beatty's new motion in the federal civil case cites the criminal charges against her as the reason for temporarily halting proceedings in the Greene case.

Morganroth said in the motion that Norman Yatooma, the lawyer for Greene's relatives, has indicated he plans to introduce into the Greene case evidence from the police whistle-blower trial at which Beatty is accused of testifying falsely.

This guy Wilson Copeland is the biggest tap dancer in the world. I can't believe that he is testifying, with a straight face, that the text messages had nothing to do with the settlement AND that he had no obligation to tell the city council ... even though the city was paying the tab.

  • #406
Fighting to keep the text messages out really is an exercise in slowing down the process and enriching attorneys involved in the case.

............
The first problem for Kilpatrick's lawyer is that the federal law explicitly permits Skytel, and companies in a similar position, to release the contents of text messages if a court in a criminal proceeding so orders. If a valid subpoena were issued in this case, that likely would be the end of the matter.

............. courts have been unwilling to extend Fourth Amendment protections to e-mails, stored text messages and other stored electronic communications, particularly those involving work accounts like Kilpatrick's.

Kilpatrick's press release to today's events:

As the legal process continues with real judges and real lawyers; City Council continues to neglect their duties so they can play judge and jury in the court of public opinion.

--------
Council needs to put the needs of the people first instead of using their time at the table for political posturing.

According to the link for the shirts, only one design is left. Either the shirts have been super popular or they didn't make enough! Very funny!

Brown was also in the audience. He said he hopes the City Council will focus on why he was fired.

"It definitely stopped the reform effort of the Detroit Police Department," Brown said. "Not only they were deceived, but the whole city was deceived."

Stefani paraphrased text messages that he saw that indicated Kilpatrick and Beatty were intent on dismantling the internal affairs bureau and installing a "good old boys network" in 2003.

"This case isn't about who's zooming whom or about $8 million, but about a mayor gutting the reforms he told the voters he would do," Stefani said. "He kicks them (the reformers) out and puts in the good ol' boy network."

Councilwoman Sheila Cockrel was upset by Stefani's claim.

"You have confirmed my worst fears about this mess," she said.

.....
Last Friday, Magistrate Steve Lockhart had Christine Beatty hauled into his courtroom because she had attempted to travel out of state to look for a job, without asking the court's permission. Lockhart responded by ordering her to wear an electronic tether, denying her the right to leave the state "for any reason" and questioned "who would hire someone facing felony charges."

The tether and travel restrictions would have made it nearly impossible for her to find a job to support herself and her children.

Excuse me? Last time I checked, a certain someone who is facing even more extensive felony charges than Beatty was still collecting his public paycheck, living for free in the Manoogian Mansion, being driven around town in a city-owned vehicle by his city-paid security, and going to church in Texas. Does anyone besides Judge Humphries see anything wrong here?

Christine Beatty is not my candidate for the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame, but I can't simply seethe silently and not speak up about the double standard -- one for the male leader and a much tougher one for the female leader -- that has been repeatedly playing out on Detroit's political stage.

Yes, both Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and Christine Beatty are facing multiple felony charges for lying under oath, reportedly to make sure that the cover was not blown on their affair.

Kilpatrick, however, is facing more charges than Beatty. She's not the one who authorized the secret agreement in the whistle-blower lawsuit, deceived the City Council into approving it, and cost Detroit taxpayers more than $8 million.

Amazing how quickly someone can get thrown under a bus isn't it?

Hoffa, general president of the 1.4-million member Teamsters union and a Detroit native, called Kilpatrick's situation in the text messaging scandal "disgraceful."

But Hoffa said he understands, from a strategic point of view, why Kilpatrick won't quit.

"Otherwise, he'd just be another guy without a paycheck," the labor leader told The Detroit News.
