Bright sunshine certainly belies the frigid temperature. Trash collection in our sub today, but we didn't put out bins so workers don't have to stop at our house, and I don't have to retrieve bin/s later. I have an appointment this afternoon that was scheduled eight weeks ago, so I don't want to cancel. I will bundle up for the 10-minute drive. Traffic should be light since schools are closed, and roads are clear and dry. Be safe and warm.

Sounds good.. I'm going to send out an SOS beacon, and see if there is a plane that might be flying by the area today; hopefully, possibly, drop me down some supplies.

Flour/sugar, maybe some powdered cream, and so on.

Northwest Indiana. Left the house twice today to put out bird & deer food. We have a Carolina wren that has been coming to one of our peanut butter suets. This is their northernmost winter range. Hit -10 today for a high & I didn't see him/her. Hope he/she makes it.

Here In Indianapolis area, -11 degrees actual temp this morning.

I put out a finch feeder more than a week ago and hadn’t seen any finches until today. Finches were hanging around eating seed all afternoon.

I also put out a sunflower seed mix and had a lot of fat robins enjoying it.

Very happy to be able to work from home today.

I haven’t seen this reported yet, but one of those icequakes (cryoseism) snapped a gas line in North Liberty, Iowa.

Metro Detroit weather: Wind chill advisory in effect until Friday morning

DETROIT - A wind chill warning for Metro Detroit has expired.

However, the National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory in effect now until 5 a.m. Friday for the area south of 8 Mile Road, and now until 9 a.m. Friday for the area north of 8 Mile Road...

The original wind chill warning expired at 2:00PM. It's been extended until tomorrow morning. I wonder if schools will be closed another day this week?

ETA: Looks like a lot of schools/districts will be closed tomorrow. More then 400 listings already.

Because of a small fire at a atatiin, Michigan residents have been requested to turn their thermostats down to 65 or lower .... and it feels much colder today than it did yesterday!

https://www.freep.com/story/weather/2019/01/30/consumers-energy-dte-usage-polar-vortex/2724017002/
Consumers Energy sent an urgent text alert on cellphones shortly after 10:30 p.m. urging utility customers to lower thermostats and reduce energy usage or risk a dangerous gas shortage in the wake of record-breaking cold.

Both of Michigan's two biggest utilities suggest turning thermostats down. Here's why:

Consumers Energy called for customers to voluntarily reduce their natural gas usage because of a fire on Wednesday and DTE Energy asked customers to reduce their electric usage.

Consumers Energy executives said that a fire at the Ray Township Natural Gas Compressor Station in Macomb County broke out around 10:33 a.m. The fire was quickly brought under control, with no injuries, but as a result the utility is scrambling to supply enough gas from reserve storage areas in Wayne and St. Clair counties, officials said.

Consumers: Customers can turn up thermostats at midnight

Consumers Energy told its customers they can dial up their thermostats again in the record-breaking cold at midnight. The easing of concerns comes amid a gas system failure that's led to unprecedented worries for the 130-year-old company...

We usually set our thermostat at 68 or 69 for daytime and 65 overnight. At 70 for a couple of days, it was actually too warm. 68 is just right, and we have a gas fireplace if the house seems chilly. I don't like to turn it on when I'm at home alone but will do so if it seems too cold in the house.

Northern IL and IA are under an ice storm warning beginning at 3 pm today. Travel may be impossible.

Sigh. I got spoiled by the warm weather the last few days and thought maybe we were out of the woods for nasty weather.

Who wants to eat big bowls of macaroni and cheese, hot soup, pasta...for some reason a bowl of salad doesn't sound good.

-20 here this morning in Montana. I skipped exercise. My car started, and I got to work on time.

More than 800 schools/districts closed due to icy conditions. Salt truck and plow have gone up and down our street twice - I can hear the crunch as they clear ice from road. Second week in a row that we didn't put out trash or recycling bin/s. I didn't want DH hauling the bins down our steep driveway, nor did I want to go out on icy driveway to retrieve them. Weather advisory ends at 1:00PM. Rain in tomorrow's forecast with rising temperatures.
