How come miners don't have some type of communication system to the outside?

What kind of money do miners make? Seems like a terrible & dangerous job!

There is a communication system but it was knocked out.

The person speaking is CEO (I think) of the company which bought the mine last in 2005.

The guy talking is something to do with the company...spokesman or something like that.

As for communication, they do have "phone lines" that run down in to the mine on wires. The mine lost electricity around the time of the explosion yesterday, so they lost phone lines. The rescue teams have been repairing those as they go down the shaft. At intervals, they stop and test the line and splice it in to the new line....I heard that yesterday.

As for income, I heard today the average weekly income is $700 gross.

I think they make between $18 and $19 an hour.

It takes a lot. Wireless systems don't go far through solid rock. Heck, a parking structure knocks out most cell phones and walkie talkies - one of those problems we still haven't solved. You need a type of wave that goes through solid rock easily.

Cell phones would not be able to penetrate the rock. Wired phones would be possible, but the presence of electricity would be too dangerous in the mines I would think.

I hear it's good money for small towns.....50-60k for those right out of high school from what I heard.

208 safety violations in 2005....many were not minor.

Their pay now is much improved from what it used to be. Now they make a decent wage; recognizing that pay scales in that area are very low, as compared to CA for sure--but I think now they are earning up to 50K a year, which is very good for those areas.
For those asking about pay - this was posted earlier

Yes, and it's usually a family type thing. Most have fathers, uncles, brothers, etc....who all mine.

It's good money for the usual reason - to compensate for the danger.

Jobs pay well for one of 4 reasons - danger, difficulty, disgusting, or skill. In this one, it's a bit difficult, and there is some real danger (there are more dangerous jobs out there), but pays very well without requiring more than (or even?) a high school diploma. If it weren't so dangerous, they'd be flooded with applicants and the pay would be less.

There's always reason to hope, but the numbers don't look good.

Yes, I heard that too...that they all have ID on their belts. I hate to think this, but maybe he was burned? Horrible thought I know, but don't know why they wouldn't let the family know. I'm so glad Rita let that poor man go...he was in so much pain.
