Miners Trapped In WV Coal Mine

  • #141
From what I've heard it is good that the mantruck {?} was on the tracks as it means the men were not blown out of it. The men left their 'things' in that vehicle.

The explosion didn't happen the way they thought. All I know is it happened in a part of the mine that had been sealed off and not being mined anymore.

The men must have run back further in the mine - he said they don't know where the other 12 are.

EDIT: Yes the man they found was burned to death. He was 700 feet inside the mine. Could lightening travel in that far? We don't know much about the explosion, but it was in a closed off area.

EDIT 2: There are 8 other tunnels I believe where they could be, connected to this shaft.

My understanding is that his body was found 700 feet from the mine car....not 700 feet inside the mine.

The unidentified body was found about 700 feet from a mine car, and it appeared the employee was working on a beltline, which brings coal out of the mine, Hatfield said.

The crews located the body about 11,250 feet from the mine's opening. Officials have thought the miners were about 12,000 feet inside the mine.

Hatfield said it appeared that the other miners were able to get out of the mine car "under their own power."

No, but it is very possible that they barricaded themselves somewhere safe. The miner's families seem to think so as well. They still have that hope to cling to.
It could happen, but it was also stated that the reasonable thing to do would just be to come on out the end they could have headed towards. They don't think that's the case since rescuers are going in through the out door and haven't seen them. But they could have gotten lost or turned around in there and just opted to whole up somewhere with liveable air quality and stay there to be rescued. They are trained to do just that. Let's hope they did and rescuers find them in time.

Oh My Goodness! I just came back to correct that figure and voila! LOL Thanks for fixing that. I didn't hear the part about the 700' from the car.

This might have been covered but I heard the mine was sold about a month ago to this new company who is giving the news conferences. They inherited the problems from the myriads of violations the other company got. They said they haden't fixed all the problems yet but have been working on them and they just feel terrible.

I'm so sorry for the family who has for sure lost a loved one. I am praying for a miracle though and hope and pray the others found a good air pocket. Chances might be slim, but it is possible and if they are found alive I will squeal and cry like a baby!!!!!!

What family? All the media I see is still leaving the name unidentified.

Leave it to Rita to find someone who is angry.

The fact that this has been said....

The unidentified body was found about 700 feet from a mine car, and it appeared the employee was working on a beltline, which brings coal out of the mine, Hatfield said. (from link above)

.........I would think family members might have a good idea if it was their family member considering you would probably know what area/job your loved one worked in.

Just a thought.

This is a huge media story. I think the workers, and the emergency personnel, and the media have been ENORMOUSLY sensitive to the families. Calling them into the church to inform them first of all new news. They've really been so sensitive.

My great grandfather was a US senator. My aunt was driving down the road, and heard on her car radio that her father had died.

That's what happens. You can't stop media in a big breaking story.

The families are just angry and worried and are lashing out. The fact that they missed the announcement of a body being found (who may not be their loved one, in fact) is sad, but that's life.

I think no one told them a body was found, they heard that from the media.

That's the way I took it.

I agree, it is VERY DOUBTFUL that the family learned anything from the media for crying out loud! The families are all staying together for what I hear and read.

ETA:
Red Cross volunteer Tamila Swiger, who was inside the Sago Baptist Church when the announcement was made, said family members were hyperventilating at the news.

"They are just passing out and crying and just really in bad shape," Swiger said.

I think when people are grieving, they just lash out at the closest target. Doctors, cops, and the media.

This is such a sad story but it's not the media's fault. Or the rescue workers fault. It's not. It's just sad. And Rita, shut up. You get out there and put on a coat, and a gas mask, and a head lamp, and spend hours upon hours desperately trying to find these men, and then we'll listen to what grumbling you have to say. NOT.

If I'm not mistaken, the body was found around 5:30pm but they didn't release the info until around 9:00om. Surely, someone spoke to the family in the time period. I think what the one man on Rita was upset about was that they still had not identified the body. That seems strange to me as he should have an ID tag on his belt.

Don't lash out at me! I was just throwing that out there. Geez....for crying out loud! It wouldn't be the first time such a thing has happened.

Sassygerl - maybe we could just stop "throwing this out there" and commenting on this ugly useless story.

Thanks.
