MN - Beau Shroyer, Wife of Detroit Lakes missionary killed in Angola arrested in connection to his death

It's interesting that there's no SM about their stay in Brazil.
It sounded like they're still basically at Portuguese 102. That would be second semester of a foreign language course at uni. Maybe 201 (3rd semester). And they're studying year round? 3-4 years? Portuguese is a basic Romance language. It's not inflected (inflected= nouns have different forms, e.g. possessive, direct object, subject, indirect object, etc. examples of this would be German, Greek, and Russian). Not as difficult as French. About like Spanish (which is super easy). FWIW English is a very complex language and can be challenging to foreign students.
IMO the Shroyers are not really embracing this mission or they'd be fluent. They were evidently embracing the IDEA of it.
How in the world are they doing any mission work at all with non-functional Portuguese?
I agree it would be a stretch if Berni spoke English. He prolly speaks Portuguese and his tribal language. I wonder if Jackie is gonna claim he misinterpreted what she wanted?
Maybe Berni misheard her, or she got her nouns mixed up.. maybe she just meant him to be biffed about a bit, ...

kill husband, in Portuguese is 'matar marido..

hit husband is , in Portuguese ' bateu no marido'

in a hurry, or if she was under the weather with malaria, it might have all sounded the same, to Berni...

( I am hunting around for mitigating circumstances, mainly for Bernadino, who, I feel , must have been under enormous pressure from Jackie, caught up as she was in some sexual fantasy, a mixture of Fado music, and muamba spices, Springbokkie beer and roobius tea. and the company of exotic youngish men )

Imagine the poor kids lost their home and not just their parents. And they might just have been made penniless by the Angola boondoggle.
oh Boondoggle, and Hornswoggling, .. day in and day out. I figured that $300.000.00 they got for their house back in Minnesota was down to dribbles, just enough left to hire a couple of muyaaye ( thugs ) and get the job done.. Brazil must have cost a fair whack... 2 adults, 5 kids, all to be housed and fed...

I was surprised by the Brazil stuff. They could have done an online course at home, and there is , while not a vast difference , there is a considerable difference in the dialect, Brazilian Porto and Angolan Porto..

Could there ever have been a family with worse Portuguese? To not even be able to find their way around an airport? After how many years tuition? A word of advice - buy a phrasebook!

The Google Translate app works wonders. Translates phrases, signs, spoken words, all the rest. I was not convinced by her ridiculous airport story.

I was going to say the same thing. Free at your fingertips!

Very curious to see what a potential defense will be. Keeping in mind, according to reports- she hasn’t even been charged yet. Wonder when that will happen?

I think it's very likely they got sick, but I'd need more proof that they actually had malaria. They might have just made it up. They seem to have been taking the pills before they actually got "malaria"... At any rate, I've become cynical about every "fact" in this case.

So, in Portuguese you'd use a pronoun before the target noun with "hit" and not with "kill"? Odd.

Yeah, the Rooibos tea can really be a trip.

Yes, I don't understand the Brazilian thing at all. Nor would I have understood it if they'd done basics in Portugal. I guess they didn't know about dialects?
The really crazy thing to me, if they didn't want to go online, is that they have universities not far off in Minnesota and North Dakota. And there certainly would be someone local-ish who could speak Portuguese. Didn't they even check?

There was something very wrong with this family's sense of the universe even before they got on that plane to Angola.

In one of Jackie's Instagram posts, she says they stopped taking the malaria pills because they weren't effective anymore.

I thought it was just me , being picky. And getting Malaria again and again... Surely they had all the shots going before heading to Brazil and then a normal person would have boosters, for Malaria, Yellow Fever, Dengue ( which they may have mistaken for malaria ) heptitas,a and b.. and even a booster for mumps and measles.. adults, too., .before Angola, and they stopped taken the tablets. People, I ask you, is this normal?

*edit* this is not a comprehensive list of what immies and vacs you absolutely should have..

For the amount of money they spent going to Brazil, they could have spent the same time in Angola, learning Portuguese and seeing if Angola was a good fit for them. It’s not a good idea to move somewhere without visiting if possible, even here in the U.S.

One wonders if they were anti-vax. I just have trouble imagining letting my children get malaria (or dengue) over and over.

SBM. I completely agree with you.

"Repeated attacks of malaria can lead to chronic anemia, malnutrition, and stunted growth."

"In endemic areas where children are prone to repeated infections and other risk factors, malaria can be considered a syndrome with enhanced longer term brain and behavior effects."

Beau D. Shroyer Obituary

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 PM, Saturday, November 30, 2024 at the United Methodist Church in Grey Eagle for Beau Shroyer, 44, whose life was tragically taken from him on October 25, 2024. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM at the Church on Saturday. There will be a private family burial at a later date in the Lakeview Cemetery, Grey Eagle. Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, Stein Chapel in Long Prairie has been entrusted with arrangements.

Beau was born on April 29, 1980 to Karl and Shari (Strong) Shroyer in Coon Rapids, MN. In 1994 his family and he moved to Grey Eagle where he graduated from LPGE High School. He went on to complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Saint Cloud State University. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He had an incredible ability to identify birds by sight and sound. After completing his bachelor's degree, he went on to complete Law Enforcement Training at Alexandria Technical College. He was employed by the Detroit Lakes Police Department for several years. As a Student Resource Officer, students affectionately called him “officer nice guy”. An opportunity as a Conservation Officer fell short causing him to explore real estate. He became a licensed realtor in both MN and ND, a vocation in which he successfully used his many talents.

In all of Beau’s adult life, his love of God and family was paramount to the way he lived his life. He married Jaclyn Hawkinson on May 6, 2005 in Andover, MN. They were both eager to start their family. With faith as a guide, they provided love, education and direction to their five children. His wit and unique humor brought laughter even in difficult times. Beau’s heart for children was expanded when he and his oldest daughter, Bella, went on a mission trip to Africa. He became committed to finding ways that he, alongside his family, could serve the Lord by providing love, inspiration, and kindness as well as life’s necessities to the children and families in Africa. Again, a vocation in which he successfully used his many talents.

He is survived by his parents Karl and Shari; wife Jackie; children, (names removed); sisters, Marina (Bobbie) Roering of Grey Eagle, Samantha Keller of South Saint Paul, Emily Baerenwald of Montevideo; grandmother, Bertha Shroyer of Coon Rapids; father-in-law, Jerry Hawkinson of Spring, TX; mother-in-law, Donna Hiller of Lindstrom; stepfather-in-law, Michael Branchaud of Apache Junction; sisters-in-law, Melissa (Coy) and Kristin Hawkinson of Minneapolis; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Lloyd Shroyer, Gene and Sharon Strong and Lester Miner.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred.

There is no vaccination for malaria. It’s usually just prophylactic tablets, which some people can’t take (due to other health conditions) or stop taking due to side effects (they can give you very frightening dreams, for example). Honestly, I’m not sure I’d want to take them long term myself, having taken them for a month here and there before. I think they are generally used more by tourists than if you are resident. No usual preventative meds for dengue fever either. It’s horrific and I agree that they probably had a bit of a mix of both, especially if they were getting ill so often.

That said, living a relatively affluent life by local standards, they should have had the means to screen off living areas, be sleeping under high quality mosquito nets, good insect repellent, and funds for high quality treatment. They should been able to avoid infection better than most people in their community, but perhaps they had a bit of a cavalier attitude to prevention. A bit like COVID, some people seem to think they are immortal, until they aren’t.

I forgot to distinguish between tablets, vax,and immie.. this is a hasty format!.. The thing is, the headaches do wear off, .I lived in a malarial district for some time, everyone took the tablets, everyone had a whacking headache, but everyone knew someone who had repeated seizures and the horrors due to repetitive malaria. .. there was a greater incentive.

They, oi all people should have been taking the tablets, because all their staff, and their staff's family would be, as a completely embedded habit . THe mosquito doesn't care about your headache. .. it carries what you have ( malaria after malaria !!!) to the next person. who then has, you know what I am going to write. .

So that disappointed me, because if you are going there to 'help people', don't flout the normal health restrictions, and advice, .. it made me sad/angry/ alarmed/disgusted / exasperated, that people would do this , the man had a DEGREE IN BIOLOGY for petes sake.. !!! I give up..

You’d think SIM the organization they worked with would have had strict rules on malaria prevention. Is there an age that shouldn’t take the pills? It seems that their younger kids got it.

I was interested to read in the obituary that Beau and his oldest daughter went on a mission to Africa first.
I long to find out which African nation, Africa is a huge huge continent... I don't think it was Angola, or else would the not say that? Saying just 'Africa' makes me think they can't recall the name of the country..
