Judge just admitted this case may be overturned during an appeal.

He digging deep...
But he just admitted he’s gotten 1000’s of emails and he hasn’t looked at any of them.. if he can have that self control why would he suggest the jurors can’t

Wow judge said Congresswoman Waters may have given the defense cause for an appeal. And the verdict may be overturned! This judge!!!! Unbelievable! There is no evidence the jurors have heard or been influenced by these out of court statements! Are we to have trials in outer space!?

ETA: Judge clearly has a gripe with elected officials talking about the case!! Wow! He calls it abhorrent! But doesn’t believe these outside comments have prejudiced the jurors!

Jurors as we know are to base their verdict on facts presented. So I don't buy that the current "climate" will affect their decision IMO
I agree. It's no surprise to anyone that the case is big and all over media. They know to disregard/ignore it.

Nelson: And it is so pervasive that it is, I just don't know how this jury it can really be said to be that they are free from the taint of this. And now that we have U.S. representatives throughout threatening acts of violence...it’s it's mind boggling.

Judge Cahill in response says “I'll give you that Congresswoman Waters may have given you something on appeal that may result in this whole trial being overturned.”

Judge Cahill: I'm aware that Congresswoman Waters was talking specifically about this trial & about the unacceptability of anything less than a murder conviction…

Judge Cahill: ...this goes back to what I've been saying from the beginning. I wish elected officials would stop talking about this case, especially in a manner that is disrespectful to the rule of law, into the judicial branch and our function.

Actually someone posted a tweet saying during defense’s closing Argument the jury was getting weary and restless.
I heard they were very engaged -- taking notes.

The judge to elected officials!

Great response by the prosecution imo: “We can’t expect vague statements like this to become part of the record”.

Eta: His comments are good, imo.

Judge is pissed about Maxine Waters.

  • #658
Omg... people are saying things all over! Why would one person saying something give grounds to an appeal?!

Motion denied Phew.....

The State's argument back about Rep. Maxine Waters DID literally say "We're looking for a guilty verdict and we're looking to see if all of the talk that took place and has been taking place after they saw what happened to George Floyd. If nothing does not happen, then we know that we got to not only stay in the street, but we have got to fight for justice," she added.".....it was no exaggeration by Nelson of what she said IMO. Maxine Waters calls for protesters to 'get more confrontational' if no guilty verdict is reached in Derek Chauvin trial - CNNPolitics

I agree With Nelson about this environment all around this trial and police reform, but the State response was pretty weak "without specific evidence this affected a juror" without even offering to have the court question the jurors. You can't say the motion should be denied When defense didn't provide any evidence of that because they weren't asked yet....I don't think that's how it works but still.
