MINNEAPOLIS — One was crowned homecoming king. One was voted class friendliest. One was a member of the African American club.

All three played crucial roles in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer found guilty of murdering George Floyd.

And all three — Minneapolis police Chief Medaria Arradondo lawyer Eric Nelson and high school student Darnella Frazier — spent their formative years at Minneapolis' Roosevelt High School.

It looks like the rest of the jurors are going to keep quiet which I think is a good thing...the alternate has the floor to herself...expect she is in NYC today getting ready for the circuit this week ?

Snipped and BBM

Had I been a juror, or an alternate, I would do all possible to maintain anonymity, from fear of retaliation. This alternate has stated publicly she would have voted for Chauvin's guilty verdict. IMO, her current behaviour is tacky. And potentially dangerous.

AGREE and she is revealing much about her personal life...her general home location which I am sure by now is well known in Brooklyn Center etc. She is making some quick $$ from this experience but long term not too smart. One discrete interview in a neutral location might have been okay but when I saw where she took the film crew to the crime scene...well that was it!!

Any news on when the other 3 might have a court date coming up?

TIA! :)
Speaking of the other 3...should we have a separate thread for them?

I would think so...right now not hearing much but imagine there are some serious discussions going on.

well above thread ended up strange but the message is there.

Praying Federal charges come soon.

Interesting that you say that. Chauvin originally was ready to take a plea deal, in exchange for serving his time in a federal facility.

What federal charges do you see pending for Chauvin?

I finally checked google and found out that federal charges' sentences are much more severe than those handed down by state courts. I think DC's future looks bleak. And IMO if he is sentenced of the incident from 2017 by federal charge the sentence might run consecutively as this is separate from GF case. Not to mention his tax evasion case. Well, one harvests what one sows I guess.

Most countries insist on anonymity and juries are never identified.

And yet I just read on USA TODAY that lack of transparency might lead to distrust in US legal system.

Long, interesting article explaining how and when jurors may be kept anonymous: https://www.rcfp.org/wp-content/uploads/imported/SJANONJURIES.pdf

In the US, it appears to be rare for jurors to be anonymous. "...In all court cases, juror information is presumed public unless the government can make a case otherwise.
Anonymous juries continue to be rare, accounting for only about a dozen a year out of more than 100,000 jury trials nationally..."
Chauvin trial jury was anonymous, a concerning trend in US justice

For Chauvin's trial, a request for juror anonymity was made and granted – "...Reasonable cause to request the jury be made anonymous includes strong suggestions of a serious threat to the safety of a juror. The court must hold a hearing on the motion, and the requesting party must bring forth evidence that would warrant anonymity..." Derek Chauvin Case Update: Why Will Jurors be Kept Anonymous?

I absolutely understand why the identities of jurors must be kept secret - for their safety and their families. It is obvious. But this terrible case is making so many waves and is so hurtful to the whole nation - everybody is analyzing everything, every dot and coma is focused on every sentence, the face expressions and body language of the main characters of this drama are under the microscope. It is all head spinning. The Judge must have nerves of steel!

jmo. Would love to see a separate thread for these three. Maybe under heading "Currently Awaiting Trial"?

Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao face trial in August on charges of aiding and abetting both second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill ordered that they be tried together, but separately from Chauvin, to reduce the number of people in the courtroom amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

yes separate thread good idea. For some reason I thought Thao was on his on for trial. He should be ...and Lane too. But actually I think each will settle and there will be no trials.

They are all being tried together but that trial doesn't start for another few months. We will probably have a separate trial thread at that point.

It would be good if they could spare the family and community another trial but I'm not sure what kind of deal they would agree on. They need to be held accountable for their actions.

While I think they all need to be held accountable and we are complicit in the crime...their roles were so different. I don't see how one trial with three defendants can work. The most likely to settle is Lane as for some reason given his asking twice about rolling him on his side etc. he just seemed a bit more uncomfortable with what Chauvin was doing.

I am glad to hear the jurors will be anonymous---I think they would be at great risk of their names were revealed.
