Any news of the judge's verdict and sentence for DC? The trial seems ages ago.

Sentencing day is Wednesday 16th June. By then it will be about 8 weeks since Chauvin's conviction on all three charges.

Chauvin will be sentenced on June 16, and could face up to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder, up to 25 years for third-degree murder and up to 10 years for second-degree manslaughter.
It has been reported he could get a longer sentence after a judge found aggravating factors in his murder case, including that he treated Floyd with ‘particular cruelty’.

Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill wrote that four of five aggravating factors in Chauvin’s case were proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

During a commemorative Tuesday morning event for the one-year anniversary of George Floyd's murder, onlookers said they heard numerous shots fired. Police said one person arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound.

It happened in the area of George Floyd Square, the intersection of 38th and Chicago in Minneapolis where George Floyd was killed by former MPD officer Derek Chauvin.

During the incident, several media crews were taking live video of the commemorative event at George Floyd Square. The sounds of the gunshots can be heard in some of their recordings, including one from NBC News.

What the heck? Someone drove into the one year anniversary event - in an SUV - fired numerous shots, and then drove away. "Developing story".

June??? Oh well, I have been waiting for this day since day one when I saw this terrible picture in Polish press (I couldn't watch the video - too heartbreaking for me) so I guess I might wait another month. Thank you for the answer. GF - Justice is coming!!!

The teenager who recorded the video of George Floyd’s fatal arrest that was seen around the world has released a statement on the anniversary of his death.

Darnella Frazier, who testified in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering Floyd, said in part that she still holds “the weight and trauma of what I witnessed a year ago.”

A year ago, today I witnessed a murder. The victim’s name was George Floyd. Although this wasn’t the first time, I’ve seen a black man get killed at the hands of the police, this is the first time I witnessed it happen in front of me. Right in front of my eyes, a few feet away. I didn’t know this man from a can of paint, but I knew his life mattered. I knew that he was in pain. I knew that he was another black man in danger with no power. I was only 17 at the time, just a normal day for me walking my 9-year-old cousin to the corner store, not even prepared for what I was about to see, not even knowing my life was going to change on this exact day in those exact moments… it did. It changed me. It changed how I viewed life. It made me realize how dangerous it is to be Black in America. We shouldn’t have to walk on eggshells around police officers, the same people that are supposed to protect and serve. We are looked at as thugs, animals, and criminals, all because of the color of our skin. Why are Black people the only ones viewed this way when every race has some type of wrongdoing? None of us are to judge. We are all human. I am 18 now and I still hold the weight and trauma of what I witnessed a year ago. It’s a little easier now, but I’m not who I used to be. A part of my childhood was taken from me. My 9-year-old cousin who witnessed the same thing I did got a part of her childhood taken from her. Having to up and leave because my home was no longer safe, waking up to reporters at my door, closing my eyes at night only to see a man who is brown like me, lifeless on the ground. I couldn’t sleep properly for weeks. I used to shake so bad at night my mom had to rock me to sleep. Hopping from hotel to hotel because we didn’t have a home and looking over our back every day in the process. Having panic and anxiety attacks every time I seen a police car, not knowing who to trust because a lot of people are evil with bad intentions. I hold that weight. A lot of people call me a hero even though I don’t see myself as one. I was just in the right place at the right time. Behind this smile, behind these awards, behind the publicity, I’m a girl trying to heal from something I am reminded of every day. Everyone talks about the girl who recorded George Floyd‘s death, but to actually be her is a different story. Not only did this affect me, my family too. We all experienced change. My mom the most. I strive every day to be strong for her because she was strong for me when I couldn’t be strong for myself. Even though this was a traumatic life-changing experience for me, I’m proud of myself. If it weren’t for my video, the world wouldn’t have known the truth. I own that. My video didn’t save George Floyd, but it put his murderer away and off the streets. You can view George Floyd anyway you choose to view him, despite his past, because don’t we all have one? He was a loved one, someone’s son, someone’s father, someone’s brother, and someone’s friend. We the people won’t take the blame, you won’t keep pointing fingers at us as if it’s our fault, as if we are criminals. I don’t think people understand how serious death is…that person is never coming back. These officers shouldn’t get to decide if someone gets to live or not. It’s time these officers start getting held accountable. Murdering people and abusing your power while doing it is not doing your job. It shouldn’t have to take people to actually go through something to understand it’s not ok. It’s called having a heart and understanding right from wrong. George Floyd, I can’t express enough how I wish things could have went different, but I want you to know you will always be in my heart. I’ll always remember this day because of you. May your soul rest in peace. May you rest in the most beautiful roses.

^^^^^She and all who were there that day were victims of these murdering police officers. I hope she finds peace and has resources to get counseling so she can piece her life back together. I know I am traumatized by what I saw on 9/11 and I was not a child watching a man slowly killed with other killers making sure I could not act.

My heart breaks for Darnella, her cousin and all who were there or were impacted by the murder of George Floyd. Reading her statement brought me to tears. I can’t imagine living through this trauma. I too was traumatized as an adult in my 50s by what I saw on 9/11 as well as on 1/6/21, but that’s nothing compared to being a kid seeing up close and personal a black man murdered right in front of her.

I’m glad she owns the fact that her recording will put Chauvin off the streets for years to come. Without her, George Floyd’s death would have remained a “medical event” during which he died. I am angry on behalf of Mr Floyd and all people of color who are treated like animals by arrogant white cops and civilians alike simply because of the color of their skin. Root this sense of superiority out, people. Root it out. You are no better than anyone and your attitude actually makes you worse.
JMO, MOO…and quite frankly, this should be everyone’s opinion.

Tragically true, especially for the George Floyds and Darnella Fraziers and every person of color among us. The goal of rooting out one’s feelings of racial superiority is certainly worth striving for though.

What I is meant was that in this society (as of now, that may change) we are still entitled to our own opinions. If we are not in step with the current woke agenda, that is our right, popular or not to believe and feel the way that we want to. If other people don't agree or have a differing opinion, so be it. Yes, of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions, beliefs and feelings…unless it’s acted upon in a harmful way. Unfortunately, beliefs that others are inferior often are acted upon. If it’s the “current woke agenda” to believe that having respect for people of all races and treating them with respect is a worthy goal for individuals to attain, I guess I’m woke. :) But perhaps I’ve missed your point. My point (poorly worded perhaps) is that I hope having that particular goal of respect is everyone’s idea of a good one, since it’s hard for me to understand anyone having a different opinion about respect for their fellow man. However, I suspect this conversation may be headed down a path mods would prefer we don’t go, so I will take my leave. JMO

No verdict by Judge, but his sentencing is on 6/25/21. And SA - it WAS originally for 6/16, but moved to 6/25.

Fortunately, the law supports equality and tries to protect those who need protection - as best as it can.

No matter what anyone's opinion is.

Thank goodness these officers are being held to account, so we can continue to trust our peace officers to maintain the law, order and respect that is so necessary for a civil and safe society for all.

On the night of Jan. 16, 2017, a Minneapolis mother’s then-12-year-old child lapsed into a mental health crisis that left her and family feeling unsafe. She placed an emergency call, seeking help. Instead, she says, she got Derek Chauvin…

“He had placed his knee on his back and close to his neck, if not on his neck,” Coughlin said in the interview. “At that point, my child was just screaming ‘Mom,’ screaming. And I was pleading, ‘Please. He’s sick. Please. He’s not resisting. You’re hurting him. Please, get off of him. Please, let him up.'”

Mirella Ceja-Orozco is the co-executive director of MFF. She believes the massive influx of donations came about because the organisation was helping those arrested for protesting the killing of Mr Floyd.

"We were not going to judge whether the person had committed a crime or not because that's what the courts are for," she says.

"But we wanted to ensure that everyone had the dignity that money was not going to be the determining factor whether this person was going to suffer before they were even convicted of a crime."

"We're often finding individuals that are detained and held in jail for months on something as little as $70, which is the bail amount, and they don't have that money to pay," she says.

They aim to prevent people being detained for months without a conviction simply because they can't make bail, and the potential damage this might have on their lives when it comes to employment, mental health, and family separation.

George Floyd: After a flood of donations, what next?

For me, in the UK, on Memorial Day in America I will forever think of George Floyd. Memorial Day will always be the day he had his life brutally taken for no reason other than a $20 bill. I know that’s not the meaning of today, but for me across the pond George is in my thoughts today and will be every year on this day. Justice will prevail and I hope that change will come 🤬🤬🤬
