I've never really heard that term before. But I am assuming that since they said "unrelated to the case" that it could mean that perhaps a juror has had something come up. Like a death in the family or something, and may need to be released. If so, one of the alternates will be substituted in and deliberations will start over.

It would depend on severity. I had a case once where a juror had a prescheduled doctor's appointment that couldn't be moved. So the court called everyone in and told them there would be no deliberations for most of that day so the juror could go to her appointment. Then the jury just picked up the next day.

Seems whacky to me that once an alternate is dismissed, they can talk about the case, read about it, or do whatever they want. Yet, if a sitting juror is dismissed, that alternate can be called back to deliberate. Do I have that right?

Different jurisdictions do it differently, so I can't really say since I don't practice in Minnesota. Here, alternates are supposed to abide by the instructions until a verdict is reached in case they need to be recalled.

I just don’t understand why there is nothing, NOTHING on the news about this in Australia.

I’m disgusted.
Maybe when the verdict is reached it will be headlines but nothing about Justine and the gun happy cop.

Maybe the jury was asking what they were going to be served for dinner. And when it wasn't something good, they hurried up and reached a verdict.
