Help Sought Finding Man, Woman Missing In Northern Minnesota

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office says 60-year-old Kenneth Wildenauer and 60-year-old Debbie Senarighi, both of Cloquet, were last seen at Tanks bar in Babbitt on Friday night.

Police found Senarghi’s car at Wildenauer’s cabin in Babbitt. A snowmobile, a 2012 Arctic Cat TZ1, was missing from the garage.

Investigators say the last ping from Wildenauer’s phone was from a location just southeast of Ely on Saturday.

I wonder if they fell through the ice.

That far north, I would think the ice is thick enough for two people and a snowmobile. Although there could be spots, since it's been a pretty mild winter across the state. However, snowmobile + Tanks bar most likely equals some sort of accident, in my opinion. That's a really wooded area and without knowing the route they may have taken, I feel like it's just as likely they are somewhere just off the roads.

Would the phone continue to ping if they went into the water? It says they got the last ping on Saturday afternoon, southeast of Ely, which is still the Babbit area. My hubby says Birch Lake is right there (it's where they go opening fishing) and there are definitely areas of flowing water on that lake that could possibly be open. I now think either could be likely - snowmobile accident or through the water, if the phone could continue to ping in the water.

Maps for some perspective. Ely is about a 15 to 20 minute drive from Babbitt. Per family that have cabins in the area they've been riding on the lakes without much worry.

I used to work as a Park Ranger here in Illinois: One of our responsibilities in winter was to measure the thickness of the ice in certain ponds and lakes. People used to walk across the ice all the time, even when it was barely thick enough to hold them. But the main reason why people fell in was because many of those ponds and lakes were fed by underground streams - and you couldn't see these from the shore (or even in a boat) - the only way we knew was because they were surveyed. I'd have to deal with people constantly walking right over that inflow, where the ice would never get thick at all (it was always the last to solidify because of the moving water underneath). I can tell you after hundreds of rescues for just about everything, when people get out in the woods they seem to often leave common sense behind!

IMO... its too early to count on the ice being thick in all places. At least from what I know about the MN lakes. You have to be very careful right now.

Too many snowmobilers going missing in such a short time. Praying for them all.

I live in Ely and it has been mild and there is open water and thin ice everywhere this year. Most years, we do have thick ice by mid-December but this year is definitely not one of those years. I am sad for their families.

Just stay off the ice always.... just go around the bodies of water. I just hate trusting them, ever. Such a rough season and it's barely gotten started.

Authorities are still looking for her companion, Kenneth Wildenauer.

The St. Louis County Rescue Squad is using two airboats along with human remains detection dogs around the lake.

The two 60-year-olds were last seen Friday night leaving a bar in Babbitt on their snow mobiles.

Authorities say the ice thickness is about 12 inches on the main body of the lake, but only a half inch where the two broke through.
