On the one hand it sounds suspicious, but on the other hand would you rent out an RV that you had stashed a body in with the compartment not even locked?

I know right.... bizarre. I mean I could just about imagine someone a bit stupid doing that if it was a roadkill deer stashed in the storage compartment, not realising that Kentucky is very much warmer than Minnesota and the darn thing is going to get stanky. But a human body?

Hmmm. Maybe the owners of the RV didn't know it was going out of state so thought it was going to stay cold? But still... a body? You don't rent out bodies.

Edited to add: And they didn't even get out of state before finding it, so the decomp smell could have been from before things got cold.

Edited again: And I just looked at the temperatures and it isn't even that cold in MN right now!

Edited again: And not only wasn't the compartment locked, the body wasn't even covered. I mean if you were doing something like this deliberately (!) then at least a couple of jumbo sized garbage bags, some gaffer tape, and then a few blankets on top to hide the shape, right?

So what about the body blocked the compartment so the owner just thought it was broken? Maybe the renters just strong armed it? Dunno...just trying to figure out why anyone would rent out an RV with a body in it. The only thing I can think is he just didn't know.

That makes the most sense. A bunch of twentysomethings on a bachelor party certainly might be prone to use more force than strictly necessary.

Lots of the storage areas in RVs have access from the outside & from the inside.

Finding 'em on the inside can be tricky, sometimes, but not for that unfortunate guy!

Kevin Casserly, 22, of Anoka, died from hypothermia, said Anoka County Sheriff’s Cmdr. Paul Sommer. The commander said his office was notified on Friday of the preliminary findings by the medical examiner for Winona County.

The examiner said the manner of death remains undetermined, Sommer added, meaning that there has been no finding yet about whether Casserly’s death was accidental.

I would hope not. I'm a new poster so I'm a little hesitant in asking questions yet...but I'm just wondering what you all think - was he placed in the compartment while still alive? Did he perhaps crawl in there himself?

I'm torn on my thoughts on this. Part of me wonders if he had some visitors from his past show up at his apartment and he possibly relapsed. That could explain the odd behavior of leaving his apartment door open. Walking without shoes on in a Minnesota November and then voluntarily crawling into a storage compartment of a RV (to get warm?).

I don't know? If he did not crawl in there on his own, why choose that location?

I don't know? If he did not crawl in there on his own, why choose that location?

I'm not familiar with RV layout and such, but perhaps if he was "placed" in the compartment, it would be by someone that is familiar and knew that the compartment could fit a body. Or the crime occurred right there, and the perp panicked, looking for the quickest way to conceal? I don't know....I'm leaning more towards the thought that Kevin didn't crawl into the compartment on his own free will....but then, how does the apartment door being ajar fit in? Mysterious.... :thinking:

I really wish we knew more details surrounding the day he called in sick to work. I guess I'm only 99% convinced there was even a crime? He very well could have gone into that cubby hole willingly.

I don't think he died willingly though. I get the feeling that he would never leave those two adorable little beings on his own free will. But I do think it could have been an unfortunate accident.

I'm also getting the feeling we will never know for sure.

This kid was probably working for law enforcement as an informant to work
Off some of his charges & ended up being murdered over it.

Sad.

As I recall, one night I was listening to the police scanner for Anoka, and there was a huge law enforcement presence in one ate a where a disoriented/confused man was running from police for unknown reasons. This was in Oct/Nov 2013. I believe this was Mr. Casserly. I always assumed when he was found in May that he had hidden in there to keep the police from finding him. But perhaps he was seen as a trespasser and someone helped him into the compartment. I had just assumed the case was closed when his body was found 7 months ago.

Something doesn't add up somewhere. While the police cleared the RV owners of charges, I recall reading that the owners told the kids not to open to storage bin -- the one where the late Kevin was found.

I'm also partially surprised it's been so long with no new leads; however, a lot has changed (politically and policingly, if that's a word) in the Cities since then.

I have been looking for any news sources with updates on whether or not the death was accidental. Nothing new has been posted in years, unfortunately.

I had never heard of this case but in reviewing it the most likely sequence of events seems to me that Kevin was not in his right mind either from the flu or because of a drug relapse or perhaps uncontrollable compulsion to abuse flu medication aka "Robotripping".

For irrational reasons he set off suddenly on this final journey, running out of gas and continuing on foot. When the cold he had ignored began to physically affect him he looked for shelter and found the parked RV. The door was locked but the storage compartment wasn't so he crawled in there, passed out and died from hypothermia.

Before passing out, he would have rearranged the contents of the compartment and/or stretched out to get more comfortable in such a way that blocked the compartment door from opening correctly. In going over the RV before renting it, the owner would have tried to check the compartment and found it jammed up. He didn't want to risk breaking it by forcing it and didn't have time to carefully clear the jam so he asked the renters to leave it alone, not to risk breaking it either.

Mostly a bachelor party asymptotic being what it is and perhaps somewhat on account of the odor the dudes went ahead and did force it open, breaking it or not became inconsequential when they found the body inside.

This is all just a speculative sequence of events but it strikes me as the most likely one that fits all the reported facts of the case.
