Matthew DeBoer, principal of Annunciation Catholic School, met with Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha, during their visit to Minneapolis following a mass shooting that killed two children and injured 21 others. He gave them a letter detailing his experience inside the sanctuary, where he was with his two older children while his youngest was on another floor, describing the terror of more than two minutes of gunfire and the moments after, including tending to injured students Fletcher Merkel, Harper Moyski, and Sophia Forchas. DeBoer expressed the urgent need for change, noting the absurdity that it is easier to obtain a gun than access medical care or order food, and called on the Vances to join the Annunciation community in humility, love, and a refusal to engage in divisive rhetoric. Quoting Scripture about forgiving the shooter, he emphasized that the right to live must matter more than access to tools of death. He closed with a plea for unity across all differences—political, cultural, and personal—to build a hopeful future together, rooted in love.

“Two weeks ago, our beloved Sophia suffered a devastating gunshot wound to the head. Doctors warned us she was on the brink of death. In that darkest hour, the world responded with faithful devotion and fervent prayer. We thank you for all the prayers, love, and unwavering support from across the globe.

“Last week, rays of hope emerged. Dr. Walt Galicich shared that Sophia was showing signs of resilience. Wednesday, the hospital upgraded her condition from critical to serious. She is now off the breathing tube and able to breathe on her own. Her progress to this point is being called miraculous. We are calling it a miracle.

It’s very brave of him to make the effort to get through to them. One can hope, I guess.

Is this paywalled? I'm unable to read it. Maybe Europeans can't access it?

An alternate source

Thank you. MOO, this is a great opportunity for the principal to make a change at his school. With his leadership, he will hopefully inspire other schools to do the same ro prevent these tragedies.

Principal DeBoer sounds like a true Christian
Definitely a good Christian, to take fast action to try to protect the children during the shooting, at risk to his own life is definitely commendable. I remember reading that the priest who was presiding over the worship service did the same. Thank goodness there are good and decent people from all faith backgrounds who will act on their faith and do likewise.

"She had her own point of view, her own sense of style, her own way of being. She didn't wait for permission. She didn't water herself down," Flavin said. “And she really taught us to show up exactly as you are.”

Flavin also called Harper “extra in the very best way.”

“Harper didn't do anything halfway,” she said. “Always choosing the premium versions, always going for the extra scoop."

Story about gun shop owner who sold gun to Annunciation killer. Owner seems ultra-responsible, often refused sales to questionable persons. Will not allow photos in store (straw purchases), camera in parking lot - car load of people - will not sell. Suicide probability denied/contacted 911.

Killer was personable, local, knowledgeable about guns, no red flags. No criminal record, no mental health referrals. Person seemed normal. Sales person feels just, just awful about sale.

What this means IMO is throwing $$$ at mental health to prevent mass shootings won't work. Background checks don't work. What works is gun control, stronger gun laws.
