Harrowing video reportedly captured the moment a speeding SUV in Minneapolis slammed into a car after running a red light — killing five young women hours before their friend’s wedding.

The five women had just left a Minneapolis shopping center after an evening of shopping and getting Henna for a friend’s Saturday wedding, when the driver of an SUV gunned through a red light, crashing into their car at 95 miles an hour.

The close friends – Sabiriin Ali, 17, Sagal Hersi and Siham Adam, both 19, and Sahra Gesaade and Salma Abdikadir, both 20 – were all pronounced dead at the scene Friday.

The driver, identified by police as Derrick Thompson, 27, was released from the hospital and booked into Hennepin County Jail. He was charged with murder Monday afternoon, Adam Kennedy, a spokesman for the Minneapolis Police Department tells PEOPLE. It is unclear if he has an attorney who can speak on his behalf.

"A conviction for that offense results in a mandatory revocation of your driving privilege in the state of California," Sabrnoch said.
Minnesota Department of Public Safety officials confirm Thompson applied for a new driver's license in March, but national databases showed his privileges were invalid in another state — presumably California.

Then, on June 7 — nine days before the deadly crash on Lake Street — Minnesota issued Thompson a new driver's license when the database showed his privileges were valid in all states, according to DPS.

DPS did not explain how that happened.

The Santa Barbara District Attorney said Thompson's driving privileges in California were revoked in his 2020 conviction.
