Many states appear to be more aggressive regarding gun possession & mental health than Missouri if you look at the chart I cite below. If this shooter had been committed to an institution at some point, shouldn't that have affected his right to own one? Of course, he still could have illegally obtained one & done the same harm.
In addition to federal laws, states have laws that govern possession of firearms and guns by those that are mentally ill.

A person commits the offense of unlawful possession of a firearm if such person knowingly has any firearm in his or her possession and:
Such person is currently adjudged mentally incompetent.
"Harris’ family had him committed on some occasions," according to the
article cited in previous posts.
When did he purchase the gun & all that ammo and who paid for it? Did he have a job?
So how did he get the gun back after it was removed from his home a little over a week before the shooting?
And why does he say he has no family when his mother & sister have tried to help him? I'm glad he did not target them as well.
