I may have missed it, but have they said how they know that all of the items described are with him? It makes me wonder if he was in daycare during the day and maybe all of that stuff had been packed the evening before and he just picked it up (if he wandered off on his own).

Google Maps

Judging by Google, it's not close enough to the river that he could have walked there without being seen.

There is a body of water not too far from it.

It looks as if they’re starting a reward now. My MIL works in Jeff City. I’m going to reach out and see if she’s heard or seen anything being so close to everything going on.

Jefferson City Police Capt. Deric Heislen said officers are still investigating the circumstances of Gray's disappearance.

Missouri State Highway Patrol helicopter aided in search efforts Thursday.

He said police haven't put out an AMBER Alert because in order to do so, police need to have a reasonable belief that a child has been abducted and that the child is in imminent danger of serious physical harm or death. Heislen said the absence of any one of these criteria means police must classify it as an endangered person advisory.

Missouri still can't get the Amber Alert down right. Even after Hailey Owens was literally raped and murdered during the time it took to get the proper "criteria" to issue an Amber Alert.

JMO

Here are the guidelines for an AMBER alert. You are supposed to be able to provide information about the abduction, including a description of the abductor and/or abductor's vehicle.

AMBER Alert - Guidelines

This is supposed to be used for very specific situations where the public can help identify a fleeing person or vehicle. There are other alerts states can use for other emergency situations.

I'm glad they're going to keep searching tonight. If he's nearby, they need to find him soon. I hope they are really interrogating his caretakers. Nothing makes sense.

Have they said when he was last seen by someone not in the home?

I thought family members weren’t allowed to search? Where is the rest of the family?

I would say it might depend on the situation, on the whereabouts of the family members when the child went missing, and whether or not it's an LE-organized search and exactly where the family members intend to search.

I think the main thing is that often the family are not advised to/allowed to participate in searches and that we should not judge a parent for not being on a search or assume that them not being on searches is suggestive that they are guilty of wrongdoing or that it means they don't care and are just leaving it up to others to do the searching for their child.

Agreed! Having participated in searches, I can assure you it is no place for a child. It could be very traumatic. I remember one search in particular where I was looking in oil barrels. I assure you my knees were shaking at what I might find. No child should be subjected to that.

Amateur opinion and speculation

Yes I’ve seen the same thing in search terrain along a dirty river riddled with used needles and feces everywhere.

No place for a child agreed, considering a body could be found.

The thing is that the amber alert system is mostly designed for observed abductions where there's a description and/or name of the adult who's taken the child, and also vehicle description that they're traveling in.

The lack of amber alert is not an indication of lower danger for a missing child, it just means that their disappearance does not meet the amber alert criteria.

Groups have come together to start searching for Darnell Gray. The step mother to Gray has become emotional and just wants her baby to come home. ⁦

There's a step-mother, too? The police chief said in the news conference this morning that both parents were out of town at the time he went missing. Was the step-mother the caretaker or was she considered one of the parents that was out of town? Just curious.

The step mother believes he got out by himself or someone he knows got him out of the house. @KOMUnews

From the DOB (11/6/2013) on the NCMEC page, he is turning 5 on November 6th.

So 4, almost 5.

That's why I included that link with my post... but the post here keep referring to him as a 3 year old. So I want to verify who is correct.

The one I saw earlier had Darnell's DOB as November 2014. So that could be where the confusion has come from whether he's 3, nearly four, or four, nearly five?

It would also help to have clarification on whether or not he does have his two front teeth as all the photos show him with them? He'd stand out a lot more as a small child without those two teeth and it would help people looking for him to rule out other kids who look similar?
