Police, volunteers expand search area for missing Jefferson City boy
jrrYkl.jpg
Search efforts to find Darnell Gray finished their third full day of expedition Saturday, after the 4-year-old was reported missing Thursday morning.

[...]

Organizers of the search effort say they intend on picking back up Sunday morning, and intend on expanding their search a one-mile radius centered at Washington Park.

“The motivation is trying to get this baby to resolve something," said MC, who has volunteered for multiple days. "We need some type of closure.”

Jefferson City police ask those interested in volunteering to call the department and leave them contact information.

I could believe a 4-year old packing up some food and putting on his coat with the thought of leaving home... but not in the middle of the night. IMO most kids who do so have a reason, usually they're mad about something and they need an "audience" to witness their displeasure. IOW, *for example only* "You yelled at me and now I'm gonna show you - I'm running away from home!"

To sneak out in the dark IMO implies fear of an adult, not anger or a need for adventure. And for a 4-year old? Uhuh, not buying it. That's not how they roll.

We didn't buy Jessee Wilson's mom's story of him running off in the middle of the night even though he had done it before, at least not after he wasn't found within hours. If Darnell had really taken off he would have been located by now. Something bad has happened. MOO.

Family members of Carl DeBrodie joined the search for missing Jefferson City boy Darnell Gray Saturday.

UPDATE: Search continues for missing Jefferson City boy

The search continued Saturday as nearly 50 volunteers gathered to look for signs of the missing four-year-old. They searched the woods surrounding Washington Park.

Family members of Carl DeBrodie helped organize the volunteers and lead search parties.

DeBrodie's relatives say they're not giving up until Darnell is found.

"We fight and strive everyday," said Rebecca Dell, one of DeBrodie's cousins. "We're here and we're not going anywhere until he's found, so every single day from here till next year we'll be here."

He is three, but his birthday is in a couple of weeks according to one of the early posts, announcing he was missing. Unless that info was wrong.

Yes, but according to NCMEC he is 4, almost 5. Hence my frustration. I asked a reporter but got no reply. It seems the majority are saying 4... his reported height and weight cause me to believe he is almost 5, assuming those are accurate. I'm going with 4, turning 5 in 10 days.

He is such a cutie and every time I see his picture he seems to remind me of some type of “star-like quality”...I don’t know how to explain it other than his light really shines through in his photos and I bet he’s got an amazing personality and says some really funny things.

There is light in those eyes and smile.

Yes. He seems like he would light up a room. Reminds me of my little guy.

Father, girlfriend and the two women (not counting the washer).

I wonder if the other two women actually live there? Or if they were just arrested there? It doesn't appear that the girlfriend was arrested which is why I wonder.

It's so devastating that we watch these cases involving kids over and over and over and you can pretty much script how they end. Especially with a 4 year old disappearing in the middle of the night..

Absolutely. I’m just waiting for an arrest, and the perpetrator to lead police to the body. That’s almost certainly the best ending we can legitimately hope for.

“Due to inconsistent statements made by some close to the investigation...”

Key words.
Very. I didn’t need to hear those words to know what this is, but it’s incredibly significant.

The police seem to be turning up the heat.

“Most kids have their first loose tooth at age 5 or 6, but it can happen when they're as young as 4 or as old as 8. (Children whose baby teeth erupted early usually lose them before late teethers do.) It generally takes a few months from the time a tooth becomes loose until it falls out.“

I’m thinking that the fact that he lost his two front teeth at the same time, was something other than a natural occurrence.

It may be a coincidence, but with what we know thus far, I’m definitely not sold on that.

@zecats Thank you! It really is people like you that help me and keep me going. ;) xoxo

I definitely do not think LE or the FBI would ever allow children to join a search. In almost all organized searches you have to be 18 and show an ID which is tracked for liability purposes.

I don't have the statement handy but I believe LE said they do not have the ability to coordinate volunteer searches right now for organizational and liability reasons. When LE directs the search, they take on the insurance liability if a searcher gets hurt. I believe this is 100% volunteer with the community just "getting together" and going out to search.

THANK GOD!

@MassGuy it’s pretty sad that 95% of the time this is how things turn out... what a sick and disgusting world we live in today! These children are our future.... or should have been :(

Maybe the missing coat was in the washing machine?

I think they would have updated the description of Darnell's clothing if they'd found any of those items in the home after all?

I'm wondering as they don't seem to have put out any photos of Darnell missing those teeth if he lost them quite recently?

If the parents and caregivers don't know how old he is, I have no reason to believe anything else they've said.

There is something wrong with this story...if a 4 year old actually got dressed, took juice boxes, and left in the middle of the night...that is not normal behavior for a 4 year old child. An older child, yes, but at age four, they don't generally go outside at night, alone.
