Thx, vulture. The text says the drive-by shooting happened "during protests". I'll see if I can find information regarding the time and location of the shooting to clarify if she was part of the protests when she was shot, or if she was rioting and was shot, or if the drive-by occurred at the same time as the protests or riots but not because she was a participant.

Is it possible that more criminal activity is happening during either the protests or riots because the criminals know LE has concentrated their manpower at particular areas? They avoid those areas and head for easier targets?

ETA JeannaT already posted the answer, so no research needed.
What I heard, it was a drive by shot in the head, she's expected to recover, completely unrelated to the protests. Just random thuggery.

Someone threw a molotov cocktail on the car-wash and it is on fire now.

Carwash on fire now. A protester threw a bottle of gas.

The police needs to come in and stop this.

Some of the media just makes me sick. They love nothing better than riots and social unrest.:( They are loving the hell out of this. That is why so many are there just hoping something bad happens.

They make it worse imo.

IMO

I know little about St. Louis except for having an acquaintance who runs a dog rescue and from his stories, it sounds like a third world country there. So no, I don't know the conditions or neighborhoods surrounding this lawless unrest that's happening now. I wish everyone well who lives in that area.

Most of the St. Louis metro area is nice, but there are parts that are like a third world country, yes. Ferguson is not in that category - yet. Some people are trying very hard to make it that way and have been for a long time. Most of the troublemakers arrested Sunday evening were not from Ferguson. One was from Dallas!

I think it's not only possible but probable, don't know how to prove it though.

you seem to have misunderstood what i wrote, let me make it really clear for you - the end part where i say "seems completely reasonable" refers to the words just prior to it. the words right before it are "they (the police) put out the message all day that gathering would not be allowed at night" and the fact that they have been pushing the crowd into a smaller and smaller area all day, making it appear larger as you pointed out.

maybe if i rearrange the words and incorporate your context it will become clear;

the crowd seems to be getting bigger, it is because the police are corralling the people into a smaller and smaller area, i find this action by the police completely reasonable because the crowd and mood will change at night and because they warned people all day that gathering would not be allowed after nightfall.

let me know if you need any further clarification.

I just watched a clip of a presser by the Ferguson Chief of Police on MSNBC (via cable, so no link). When asked, he specifically stated that there was no official curfew in effect. IOW - martial law has not been implemented in Ferguson. I didn't hear him say anything about protesters not being "allowed" to assemble at night. He was saying that protesters were being asked to not protest at night for their own safety.

There's a big difference between "not being allowed" and "being asked".

Legally speaking, unless the mayor implements martial law and sets a curfew, protesters cannot be prohibited from peacefully assembling either day or night. Peaceful assembly is a 1st amendment right.

Law enforcement has the duty to respond to violence or threats of violence, vandalism, etc. We have to bear in mind that the strong police presence we're now seeing in Ferguson is a direct consequence of the violence, looting, property damage, arson, and vandalism that occurred over the weekend.

I oppose any police action that unjustly targets nonviolent protesters, reporters, or bystanders. This is already an extremely volatile situation that will only escalate if the officers on the ground don't keep their cools. The thugs responsible for the weekend mayhem are looking for an excuse to wreak more havoc, and it will be the peaceful folks who'll suffer because the unnecessary violence detracts from their message. The cops need to be careful in how they respond to the law-abiding demonstrators. At the same time, the peaceful protesters need to continue to be respectful, as well as recognize that the thuggery that occurred over this past weekend is the reason why the SWAT teams are out in full force.

I think they are worrying about the cameras escalating the violence. People will do crazy things for the benefit of the cameras.

I grew up during the race riots in the sixties. I've always thought it amazing how what is suppose to be a "peaceful protest" can become a catalyst for looting and burning their very own neighborhood and destroying the businesses people have worked all their lives building. Thieves and thugs will always take advantage of a situation to do what they do best. Most likely some of these thugs have probably been involved themselves with the deaths of black, young men.

The people who are live streaming this situation are exacerbating the problem IMO.

More violence. I cannot imagine what will happen if there are no charges or if it goes to trial and the verdict.

I appreciate the live reporting of what's going on there because the public has the right to be informed about what's going on.

If the media is silenced or inhibited in their ability to exercise their 1st amendment right of freedom of the press, or if the media refuses (for whatever reason) to cover important events such as what's occurring in Ferguson, then the public is left in the dark.

A free press helps to ensure justice in government.

This is an opportunity for Al Sharpton. He needs to be out there encouraging people to return to their homes. He needs to lead. With LE in riot gear, protestors need to prop their signs up and head in. Show the LE, media, and watching world that there is no need for riot gear, tear gas, extra.

But alas, those intelligent protestors are already home, all that is left are the thugs who want a confrontation, who want to destroy and rob. And the media. Jmo

Honestly, I have two points: 1. When the shooting took place the officers should have been more concerned about INVESTIGATING the shooting rather then waiting for 2-3 hours VAMPING up the police force. They honestly left the body there for several hours UNCOVERED and BAKING, and called in 15 other police forces to come and stand their ground. Yes I understand, that the coroner had to be called, but excuse me It does not take HOURS for this to happen. That was the police officers Second mistake. It just aggravated the situation even more.. There was NO REASON that these officers could not do a better job at this. Its plain ridiculous!!! And I believe that if they had handled this differently we would not be where we are at today with the rioting and looting. And please don't think I am condoning the riots, or looting, because I am not. The police DID NOT have to call in 15 other police forces to deal with this. * * * * 2. I think Al Sharpton having these peaceful protests at night is a stupid idea. I think he is contributing to the unrest, because after they end then riots and looting breaks out. If he were smart, he would schedule these peaceful protests in the day, not the night. That way people go home after them, rather then hanging out in the streets looking for trouble!
