That's a really good question about how you make money in that area. The Wal-Mart where I used to work was only profitable one year out of the first 10 it was open, so I was told. I used to wonder what was the purpose of keeping it open. The only thing I could think of is that there was a K-Mart and a Venture close by and they were hoping to hold out longer than those two and take all the business after they were gone and maybe be profitable after that, but I don't know. The Venture is gone now, the K-Mart is still there.
The unit of measurement we used to use for missing merchandise after inventory was truck - as in 1.2 trucks full of stuff. One year I was there it was 3.2. Large corporations can weather these losses better than small businesses, so if any businesses come back I guess it will be more big ones than small, and that's not the healthiest thing either. We'll see.
