Why don't residents just move the pile to the grassy area? There would be more space, more access? (I guess that's too logical and practical....)

I suppose the memorial is itself a form of protest-- obstructing the street, like MB and DJ, and like the "protestors" have done.

There is a utility pole there. Fire Marshall will probably tell them to move it away from the pole which is highly flammable.

The amount of vegetation that is removed is determined by the Public Resource Code 4292. A firebreak is created by adhering to the following criteria:
Radial Clearance (Ground Level): Remove all flammable material to 10 foot radius around pole.
Vertical Clearance (0-8 feet): Remove all brush, limbs and foliage of living trees.
8 feet to the High Voltage Lines: Remove all dead, diseased and dying limbs and foliage.

Great. Comments of "burn the city" and "burn the police station" on SM now. Piaget is one motivated agitator.

Oh man. I can see this whole thing spinning up. "They won't let us have a memorial for MB!" "The fire department/ DOT/ police are discriminating against MB's memorial!"

Really? Burning candles, stuffed animals, utility poles, residential area, middle of double yellow line road? Authorities have been very patient, IMO. It's time to get a local clergy person/s involved and make a plan to host the memorial somewhere safe, IMO. Local leadership is needed right now, to keep this from spinning up!! (I hope CMac2 stops by!)

I think the problem with in this particular community is that they assume way too much. Everything is an attack on them instead of looking into why something like this could have happened it is easier to place the blame on authority. Utility poles are made from Southern pine. And we all know how fast pine can ignite.

Some are talking about how it smells funny. Fire extinguishers. They don't appear to be even looking for facts from media, etc.

I hope their own candles burning the memorial doesn't motivate them to riot and burn again. Some seem interested in firing it back up. Real interesting Piaget's jumped back in.

Piaget is way too slow getting out her phone/camera. She claims to have watched a black officer watch it burn "for a while" but the pic she posts is just of the memorial burning, no officer in the picture (black or otherwise). And supposedly she has video, too? Where's the video? Where are the pics of the cops standing there watching it burn? Sorry, Piaget, I don't believe you.

Edit: Have to take it back .... there is video of cops there while it's burning. I'd bet they called the FD first, then while waiting for FD they decided to try a regular fire extinguisher from their car.

At least one person called her and others who sat and watched it burn out. If you're so concerned about the memorial burning, why sit and watch, try to help put it out yourself, he said.

I'll say it....

I truly believe this was either started by the candles, or some "protesters" started the fire to get people interested in their cause again.

But, but they have already removed any evidence from the site and started putting up a new memorial. If it was arson how would an investigator investigate?

The stories being passed around are wild. LE set it, later put it out, no firefighters ever came. Firefighters put it out, no LE came. And many appear to have smart phones to look up info from media and pics from tweets, but why waste outrage by looking for facts?

The fear of police scenario wasn't specific to those two that day, but reflects the overall anger towards police in that community. It also isn't specific to police, the same things happen when different cultures interact and folks feel threatened or are intimidated by the level of crime; fear can quickly turn into dislike/hate.

Also adding to feelings of fear/threat in Ferguson is homeowners seeing their already under-valued homes lose all hope of rebounding as a proliferation of Section 8 clients move in:
