That Prosecutor almost broke down in tears at the beginning of that presser. Stated he has two kids about the same age. What a lot of people here banging on the LE, the Amber Alert fail to realize or appreciate is that they even jump in their personal vehicles within an hour of a case like this. And then when it ends this way they go home and hug their own kids and cry. This community pulled out all stops to try to help her.

The reason this will continue to happen is because of our culture that doesn't believe the victim. A child reports that their uncle has been molesting them: At least one or more of the following people will be skeptical of the child's claims, guaranteed: The child's family, LE, a jury, or a judge. When people don't believe what the child is saying, how long of a sentence is the perp going to get? This is a much bigger problem than people want to admit...They just want to blame it on a small group of people...when it's our society that says victims lie, exaggerate, try to get the abuser's side of the story, give him the benefit of the doubt, etc.

he was a stranger, eileen. per LE.. it has nothing to to with that insofar as we know

are the margins blown for anyone else?

I was talking about how a lot of times we hear about strangers who abducted and murder children have previous cases of abuse, usually against children they know. People ask why so and so was out and about after that, and my post was to explain why these predators aren't getting life in prison.

how do you get into two bags without being in some sort of piece arrangement?

Sorry, I guess since it said "the body" "removed the trash bags and confirmed it was the body of Owens" made me think she was in one piece. Otherwise, I guess I thought it would say "remains". But since they refer to her as body, it make me think she was whole. Or I hope so. I don't know why I'm so much more disturbed at pieces.

I have to wonder if he planned this and knew this child walked by herself at times.

My post is not intended at all to disparage the victim's family. However, I think it's important to note the circumstances surrounding child abductions to work to prevent them in the future. To me, it seems fairly obvious that a child walking alone would be more at risk of abduction than one walking with an adult or in a group of children.

A close friend of mine lives in Springfield. She is close friends with one of Hailey's neighbors. (Obviously, I'm not going to say which neighbor.) Anyway, without delving into rumor or hearsay, yes, it is plausible that this perp "knew Hailey walked by herself at times."

Of course, it's also possible that the perp knew nothing of Hailey's walking habits & happened upon her by chance, saw that she was walking alone, & felt she would be easy prey.

This makes me even more cautious as a mother. It's horrendous that this world is not safe enough for our kids to walk a couple of blocks alone, during the day, without risk of ending up a lost life & a statistic. :(

Hopefully LE is digging up the basement and that of any other place he lived.

agree...I can not see how this can possibly be his only crime.

It makes me not even want to let my kids walk home from the bus stop or walk the dog :(.

I also feel bad for the people who tried to chase him down. They did everything they could, but it still was not enough. Unfortunately, it is the system that is broken. When it takes an hour to release the information on the kidnapping, and 2 hours to issue an Amber Alert when there were witnesses to the kidnapping, there is little hope than any person bent on killing a kidnap victim will be caught before said killing occurs.

Bark,

The perp and his vehicle were found by LE last night. :)

The 'system' is not broken-the sense of right and wrong is. Too much specialization nowadays-started out with jobs and the losing of such-now free will demands respect with no consequences unequivocally.

Just my opinion this post

:seeya:

Thank you Nurse for the links to the witnesses. I don't know why the criticism of them. If every abduction had witnesses who were so vigilant and swift thinking, this forum would have only a fraction of cold cases . These guys BROKE this case with their information ! Period !

Imo, these witnesses are heroes. In so many many cases of child abductions no one sees or hears a thing.:( The child just vanishes into thin air and possibly later on they are found murdered or they are never found at all.

This case was wrapped up lightening fast due to the great witnesses that saw all of this happening and tried to stop it and the 30 police officers who hit the ground running from moment one.

IMO

I think the Amber Alert is a bit like CPR ... most people who get CPR sadly die. Yes a small amount are saved by it, and and even smaller amount saved after much longer than we expect someone to survive without breathing or a heartbeat. So this is why we give it a go, not because it will work but because it might.

It would be good to differentiate between stranger abductions and family ones. One is a crisis situation, the other is a chronic situation, it is going to look a lot different to strangers. An Amber Alert might empower a person to approach an adult with a distressed child, or follow a car, to intervene right then. If it is a parent abduction and filicide is not a concern, calling police is probably safer and more effective than intervening.

That too is the piece I'm going to have to do more research on. It just doesn't make sense to me why it would take two hours when LE has to KNOW how fast these crimes happen. (I'm not specifically speaking to SPD - I'm saying LE in general). Very rarely do the perps keep the victim alive for any length of time. :(

I'm thinking that a lot of these crimes prob occur with less than an hour before the victim is dead.
There is NO time for paperwork, second guessing, getting ducks in a row for a "squeaky clean prosecution". However, laws have to be followed.

I guess it just frustrates me that we as a society consider or even allow letting someone go or toss evidence out of court because of a technicality of some damn piece of paper.:banghead: That should NOT be a concern for LE...the concern is find this person NOW.

Time is of the essence in abductions...there IS NO TIME for anything but breaking down doors, chasing down vehicles, and attempting to STOP the crime before it happens.

I know these aren't answers, but I just can't stomach the fact that if something was simply done sooner (even breaching protocol) some of these poor babies could possibly be saved.

RIP baby girl...you are in a MUCH better place, I promise you that.

This 'Village' raced to save a child. In my book they are heroes and I pray for them.

So dh just got home I told him who it was. I kinda figured he might know him since his cousin dated him in HS...and he did know him. Dh and CW partied all the time in HS and CW dad played guitar in dh church. Needless to say dh is in shock.

I have listened all day about the witnesses and what they should have done. Well I for one think they did awesome. The one guy that took after them in the car followed them for some distance until the wonderful 5 o'clock traffic got in the way. I know if I was ever taken or my daughters were I would want these guys and gal as my neighbors.
