INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — An Independence police officer and Jackson County civil process server were shot and killed, and two more officers were shot and wounded on Thursday afternoon outside a house in the area of N. Elsea Smith Road and E. Bundschu Road.

Authorities say this happened after the process server was attempting to serve an eviction, and the shooting suspect is in custody.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. —
The Independence Police Department has confirmed that one of its officers and a Jackson County Process server have been killed — and two more officers are injured — after a shootout that began during an eviction in northeast Independence.

Police have identified the deceased victims as 35-year-old officer Cody Allen and Drexel Mack a Civil Process server in his early 40s.

Independence officer, civil process server killed in shooting, 2 other officers wounded; suspect arrested

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (KCTV) - An Independence police officer and a Jackson County court employee were shot and killed Thursday afternoon while responding to a residence in northeast Independence.

The 16th Judicial District Circuit Court stated the shooting took place during an eviction. A Missouri State Highway Patrol spokesperson stated that multiple civil process servers arrived at a home in the 1100 block of North Elsea Smith Road.

While the eviction notice took place, someone at the home shot one of the process servers. At that point, a neighbor and court employee at the scene called 911 for additional assistance.

Who was Independence police officer Cody Allen?

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - On Thursday afternoon, the Independence Police Department lost one of its own.

While responding to assist in the shooting of a civil process server, Ofc. Cody Allen was fatally shot by a suspect at a home in the 1100 block of North Elsea Smith Road.

The call went out about 1:12 p.m., according to audio captured on Broadcastify.com, saying: “Independence, we have units en route. Officers down inside the doorway. Suspect is still inside.”

Then, at 1:15 p.m., came the call: “Independence is requesting assistance. They have an officer down at 1111 N. Elsea Smith Road.

Another voice said: “This will be on a gunshot wound.”

Two minutes later a voice said: “We now have two officers down.”

Around 1:30 p.m., someone said, “We see the incoming units are telling us to stay in the back, the officers are still stuck at the house getting shot at.”

Then, around 1:40 p.m., someone said: “I’m on foot…we’re approaching the house and it appears that they’re doing CPR on one of the officers.”

Man charged in shooting of Independence officer, process server

NDEPENDENCE, Mo. — The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office has filed charges against an Independence man in the deadly shootings of an Independence officer and civil process server.

Larry D. Acree has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, three counts of armed criminal action and one count of first-degree assault.

Suspect owed $29k in taxes before shooting Independence officers, process server

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker was hesitant during a Friday news conference to get into the motivation of Thursday’s shooting that left an Independence police officer and a Jackson County civil service officer dead.

But it’s clear the suspect faced eviction due to more than $29,000-worth of unpaid property taxes, according to county records.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The man charged with shooting and killing an Independence police officer and a Jackson County process server appeared in court for the first time Wednesday.

It comes one day after he was booked in jail, following his release from the hospital.

Larry Acree was flanked by multiple jail employees and several sheriff’s deputies as he entered the courtroom. He was in a wheelchair and on an oxygen tank.

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — A week after he was shot and killed trying to help another public servant, Independence Police Officer Cody Allen will be laid to rest Friday.

Visitation was held Thursday at Community of Christ Church

This is the second time in less than three years Independence has had services for a police officer shot and killed in the line of duty. Independence Mayor Rory Rowland described it as a scab still healing, being ripped right off again.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Drexel Mack, the 41-year-old Jackson County process server killed in the line of duty last week, will be laid to rest in Miami, Florida next weekend. Loved ones confirmed the plans to FOX4 Friday night.

Range Funeral Homes in Miami will be handling Mack’s service.
