Cappuccino post ~86
"Why is it only ever rape that produces this blame the victim reaction anyway? If I carelessly leave my purse lying around and it gets robbed, would anybody feel the need to make excuses for the thief? I doubt it somehow."
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Not making excuses for a (hypothetical) purse thief above, but some would say if the purse is carelessly left lying around, maybe in a grocery cart, on store shelf, or open car, instead of being, say, in your hand, on your shoulder, etc. the circumstance makes it easier for the thief to operate successfully.

The same way, some people leave their home front and back doors unlocked - making it easier for burglars to operate successfully.

The same way, some people leave car doors unlocked while parked - making it easier for burglars to operate successfully.

In a perfect world, a person could leave gold and silver bullionsitting on the front porch or driveway and not worry it disappearing.

Not making excuses for the thief.
Not blaming residents that their homes or cars were burgled.
Just saying, some people's behavior make easier them targets than others and imo, criminals tend to aim for low hanging fruit.

But ultimately burglars, rapists, and other criminals deserve to be punished.

Robin Bourland, a longtime acquaintance of the Coleman family, said Coleman was being treated at a Kansas City children’s psychiatric hospital after ingesting unidentified pills Sunday evening. Coleman’s mother, Melinda Coleman, first released news of the suicide attempt in a Facebook post Monday.

“It’s been heartbreaking for them,” Bourland said of the Colemans, who now live in Albany, Mo. “This has been a really long, drawn-out battle, and it’s heartbreaking to see something like this happening.”

Snipped by me.

This makes me so sad. Hope she gets better and she gets as much as help as she needs to become the woman she was meant to be.

Grrrrrr! and Why child endangement?

IIRC, the endangerment charges were for leaving her on the porch in the cold.

Grrrrrr! and Why child endangement?

Dietrich sentenced Barnett on Thursday to 120 days of confinement but suspended the execution of sentence and placed Barnett on two years of probation. Additionally, he ordered that Barnett must verbally apologize to Daisy, have no more contact with her, perform 100 hours of community service and reimburse Daisy’s family for her mental health treatment, initially estimated to be about $1,800.

I sincerely hopes he learns and grows from this.

Bet her mental health bills are higher than that now. Also wonder if this plea agreement played any part in her latest suicide attempt.

IMO, the bolded part below explains why this case went the way it did. Obviously this former state legislator Rex Barnett has a lot of power and influence in that area and plenty of people willing to carry out threats and intimidation.

This is pathetic and very sad that no one in that area has the gonads to get justice for these two girls and their families. Where is the Buford Pusser there who will set things right! Damn it.:banghead:

"Daisy’s family disputed that and said they believe the charges were dropped because the boy is the grandson of former state legislator Rex Barnett. The Colemans say they were harassed and tormented by many people in the county who had strong ties to the boy’s family."

Geez. . .I don't even know what to say. It's not like any of us don't know. . .money, power and politics go hand in hand. Let's all hope that Anon does what they do. :(
I can't stay. The whole thing makes me sick to my stomach.

The reason for the outcome of the case is that there was no evidence of anything beyond her being left outside her house. Prosecutors can't get a conviction simply on an accusation without evidence to support it, and in this particular case that appears to be what the situation was. The girl did not remember anything, and was drunk, but, according to her, so was he. Both were minors, so if they had sex while intoxicated, who was abusing who? You could argue that both should be charged if they were sufficiently intoxicated. There was supposedly a video, that probably would have made the circumstances clearer, but the prosecutors were unable to find it. So there was not really anything to support a charge, which is why it was dropped.

What they did have evidence for however is her being abandoned outside in the cold while intoxicated. That is what the endangerment charge was for.

An article about the life after the assault and rape of Paige Parkhurst and Daisy Coleman.

this is MOO....I lived in Maryville, MO for several years. A nice quaint town to visit, however, if you were not born there, had generations of 'roots' there, be prepared for anything, many people are related so many ways it is not funny. Don't make any waves. No matter if there is fighting within families, they will stick up for each other no matter what. I was very glad to leave. I believe the girls, their parents 100%. A cover up....I will leave that to each of you to decide.
