Mother of alleged victim in Maryville case releases secret recordings

In one of the excerpts, Coleman is heard saying, “We were always willing to testify” and raising the possibility that perhaps she and her daughter had missed an earlier deposition.

Rice is clearly heard in another clip telling Coleman, “You haven’t missed a deposition at all. The only deposition was this one, and that was where it was explained to you that you were claiming the Fifth.”

In another recording, Rice tells Coleman, “We’ll get this thing going again. ... We’ll get another deposition set up, but it’ll probably be July.”

Excerpts of secret recording in Maryville case

Melinda Coleman on Thursday provided excerpts from what she said was a secret recording of a conversation with Nodaway County Prosecutor Robert L. Rice near the end of May 2012.

Here is a partial transcript.

Coleman: “What Carrie said when the psychiatrist … said it wasn’t good for my daughter to testify because she’d already been suicidal, she said she told you that and that you said, verbatim, ‘I don’t give a s***, those mothers are going to pay.’

“I never said anything about you. … I never wrote that stupid petition on Facebook. … I wasn’t going to do that.”

Rice: “Well, Daisy did.”

I LOVE her words:

"I just hope more men will take a lesson from my brothers: They look out for women. They don’t prey on them." :loveyou:

It's disturbing how many people have a hard time realizing that rape is about power, not about sex. I'll read articles about young kids being raped, and you'll have people insisting it's because the rapist couldn't get "a real woman". Um, no. And post a picture of a victim of rape who is not considered attractive, and you'll see so many comments asking why someone would want to rape her. Or in Daisy's case or in so many other cases, the victim is either passed or are very close to it, so obviously it's about power. It's just sad how ignorant so many people are about rape.

The comments I see on articles are quite disparaging.

I suspect the reported statistics on rape are low. Victims typically blame themselves in one way or another. This is fueled by societies views, which can be seen by comments in articles and the reprehensible behavior by some in the community. I despise this mentality and sometimes feel that no matter how much you try and educate certain people, they will never get it. :banghead:

What this family has endured is beyond my comprehension. Having to deal with being raped is enough on it's own for a victim to heal from, but it didn't stop there. She was left outside in the elements and could easily have died. She lost her father, her house burnt down, her mother lost her job and she was subjected to severe bullying that was allowed to go unpunished by a large number of adult authorities in the community.

These adults that failed to protect her and allow this to continue disgust me. Instead of lashing out at the victim, they should be educating students about rape and the consequences. They should be punishing those that victimized and continue to revictimize. Parents and faculty should be having conversations with their children and informing them of the consequences of sexual assault and bullying and make it well known that if they chose to participate in these actions their will be severe punishment.

If communities do not want the media attention and outcry from citizens then they better act appropriately. Otherwise, as anon would say "EXPECT US". Survivors and those that support survivors are no longer staying silent.

Bless these young girls for their bravery to speak out despite all the obstacles. Know that you have a lot of support!!

"Melinda Coleman on Thursday provided excerpts from what she said was a secret recording of a conversation with Nodaway County Prosecutor Robert L. Rice near the end of May 2012."

[Rice] "....I’ve never, never had a criminal case before where I had to go through, with my own victim, had to go through counsel to able to talk to them. ... Anyway, we’ll get this thing going again if you’ll sign this, it would be great, if not, that’s OK, but we’ll get another deposition set up, but it’ll probably be July. ... I’d like to get it done sooner, but we’ll just see. ... If you can get Daisy up here to talk that would be great. Well, thanks for talking to me.”

"Coleman: 'Thank you. I appreciate it.'”

Two things are puzzling:
1. Was Rice's statement about having to go through counsel to speak to victim, true?
2. If Rice's stmt was not true, why did Coleman not address that immediately in the conversation?

Does anyone know what happened to her friend that night? Was she also dumped on the front lawn in the snow? I'm very happy Anonymous has gotten involved. This takes the case to a whole new level and the perps will know what it is like to be publicly vilified and victimized. Not in the same way as the true victims but they will feel the true hate they deserve. I'm sure someone's cell phone video will be retrievable and will help in this case.

You know, the attorney that was … the attorney that was in Omaha just simply wrote that one letter because someone said to him that, said that he was a prosecuting attorney ... and he’d heard that (unintelligible) was going to call and get everything dropped as a favor to Barnett. And that I should have a letter sent.

“So I called Mr. Sheraton and said can you write a letter, just, you know, I said, I don’t know if this is all rumor, what it is, but can you just write a letter so we know…”

I am not sure if the attorney was just used once word got around that the charges would be dropped as a favor.. or what.

The other girl was told to climb back in the window and go to sleep. They told her they would take care of Daisy until she sobered up.

'MY kid is being assassinated': Mother of football player at center of Maryville rape case breaks silence to claim HE is the victim

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...-Matthew-Barnetts-mother-says-hes-victim.html

omg some people should just remain silent.

Assassinated? That trivializes victims of assassination like President John F. Kennedy. The mother of the rapists is reminding me of Jerry Sandusky speaking out after he was arrested in 2011. :stormingmad:

Why it matters if a rape victim is drunk

Whether the alleged victims were “wasted” or “drunken” does matter, but not for the reasons those commentators suggested. It matters legally, because in most states, incapacitated people are unable to consent to sex, whether because they’ve drunk alcohol (even, in many states, if they’ve done so knowingly and voluntarily), taken prescription or illegal drugs, or are developmentally disabled.

The Kansas City Star reported that Coleman’s blood alcohol content was .13 seven hours after the alleged rape.

Despite years of rape law reform, many people still imagine rape as a crime involving literal force, rather than lack of legal consent.

ONLY THE TRUTH WILL SAVE US

Nothing will change until we make the reporting of rape easier and safer for victims. Until we de-stigmatize victims and stigmatize offenders, no matter how popular and no matter how far they can throw a football. Nothing will change until we hold institutions and individuals completely accountable for what they do. And for what they cover up.

This angers me on so many levels. If I said exactly what I thought, I would be put on a permanent vacation.

Thanks for sharing this.

So many levels - thank you.
