MO - Megan Meier, 13, Mentally Abused, Commits Suicide

  • #181
There was a case here recently that really made me think about how kids treat each other.

A popular boy, on school council, lots of friends, outgoing and a really good kid.

Well in confidence he told his best friend he was gay. I guess that best friend was anything but a friend. It spread around school. The child was bullied, stuffed in trash can, verbally abused and taunted. The whole nine yards.

Then of course on line the exact same thing. Degrading, demeaning horrible comments.

He was online with someone and told him what he was going to do. The person online told him "please, man, don't do, don't give up, don't do it".

His sister came home and found her 13 year old brother hanging from the upstairs railing.

The entire family is an emotional wreck, the mother will never enter the home again, she is near a breakdown. The daughter can't work, can't sleep, and is an emotional wreck.

The boy was only 13 and was destined to be successful, with straight A's and a great outlook on life.

This really upset me when I read the story.

I was reading another blog that has made it a mission to keep up on the Drews-they have posted candid pictures of the woman who began the hoax. (I am not sure if we are mentioning her by name?) I was quite startled to see that both she and another of the hoaxers are quite curvy which makes their attack on Megan's body type seem particularly cruel. There have also been a number of incidents since the suicide where neighbors have protested the presence of the Drews in subtle and not so subltle ways...for those of you that are into an eye for an eye type justice, you might like this blog:

As for suing MySpace, as much as I think it is a waste of bandwidth and a black hole for the dregs of society, I have to agree that the family doesn't have a case.

There is a lot of good being done on MySpace. Several people, including myself, have pages dedicated to missing persons and other great causes. Many musicians have them too - it's a great way to stay in touch with fans and find new ones. Unfortunately it's the bad stuff on MySpace that gets the most publicity.

I'd say that horrible woman deserves any snubbs, remarks, or whatever she gets from neighbors but I hope they don't say too much to the girl. She was probably influenced by having bad evil parents and needs some sort of help. It's too bad there couldn't be murder charges brought against the adults and a good long stay in Juvie for the girl though. Telling and inciting a distraught person to kill themselves is murder in my opinion.

Boy do people have some not nice things to say about Lori Drew!!!! I would not wish Hell on anyone but, years of guilt and torment here on earth are in order. There really is something wrong with a mother who would set up a myspace page to see if someone is talking badly about your daughter. That is so unbelieveably junior high like. This women really must have some serious issues and never moved past the age of 13 to behave in this way. Parents like this feed the middle school drama. I think jail is in order for Lori and some serious counseling for her daughter (who in my opinion will be just like her mom).

Regarding the bold print. In my area, (VERY RURAL farm country Nebraska), we have a lot of parents who could/have done similar things...just not to this point. With so few kids it is very competitive around here. With not a lot of activity, there is more gossip, bordom etc. It really scares me for my kids. It's already started to a point...:(

Tragic story. Seems cyberspace has multiplied the avenues for people to abuse one another. Starting with Columbine as a landmark, we just don't seem to be getting the message of how fragile teens are as they grow into themselves. Bullying, both physical and cyber, hurts and leaves lifelong scars, if one makes it that far.

Sorry, but it is clearly a very shallow attempt to justify the cyber bullying by people associated with the Drew's if not the Drew's themselves. The writings don't ring true to me-it seems as if it is the same voice with different names...you guys decide if you can get on!

Yes, while Meghan is the one who hung herself, the fact remains that she was a victim of cyber-bullying and one of the perps was an adult who set the situation up initially for extremely suspicious reasons. I personally think it is appropriate to be angry with the Drew's, and appropriate to be angry with Megan for choosing to end her life over something that ultimately was false. Teens are impulsive-and when it comes to a noose it is hard to take it back. The Drews are not SOLELY responsible, but they contributed and just like Megan they cannot take that back.

I finally got it to load. The description "Kristin" gave of the victim sounds exactly like the girl was bipolar. How sad and dangerous of a game this irreponsible adult played on a girl with such issues. Except for the slutty behavior (if there even was any - hard to believe a slutty girl wouldn't have a boyfriend in this day and age...) she appears to have acted much like my daughter does without the right medication - she is bipolar.

I knew it was a serious thing, bipolar, but I can't even wrap my mind around someone doing this torture to a girl like this. You don't hurt people - mentally, physically or otherwise. You just DON'T do it.

Tragic. I want to go hug my daughter now. Think I can take her out of school as an excused absense just because I need to hug her?

I can't get to it - even on a T1 line. I'm assuming it's not nice.

Someone posted this link earlier in the thread. I think it was mentioned later that the IP address for that blog didn't even come close to the Drew's location. Not that that means anything, but just thought I'd mention it if you want to read further back for better details!

ETA: Oops, I meant to quote mama2echo's comment, not yours, Glitch. Sorry!

Anderson Cooper covered this story last night and it was the first my husband had heard of it, he couldn't get over how some adult could actually do this!! He doesn't follow all of the news stories like I do and just doesn't seem to view the world as bad as it really is like me I guess. Tonight I'm going to show him the pictures of Lori Drew so he can see that an average looking woman can indeed be evil, just like serial killers can look like the neighbor next door.
I'm wondering what other hateful evil sneaky things this woman has done through the years? I bet there are many things she's done behind peoples back, never to their face! to make herself feel better.

Are you kidding? Quote me, misquote me - all you want! I'm so jealous of all those people who are famous and say stuff everyone quotes - but I say cool stuff sometimes TOO and yet never get recognized for my genius.
So, might as well quote my drival. :-)

Oops, there I go again. This time I meant to quote you! lol Another great benefit as a WS member. I think our children get hugged a whole lot more than non-WS-members. :)

I haven't heard anything on this case lately....

Fox news is reporting no charges will be filed. It's just breaking now and there isn't a link yet.

There you go-Laurie Drew, her "unidentified 18 year old employee" and her daughter dodged a bullet. They have to live with what they have done, but unfortunately so do the Meier's. This one will continue to be tried in the court of public opinion however...
