Yes, the dog, Crackers (a blond German Shepherd), went missing in approximately August of 1988. The only info I could find says that Randy had Crackers for about four years. I'll bet the Leaches (a highly dedicated and loving set of parents) would have a photo of Crackers.

I need help from a local. If I'm interpreting this correctly, Randy Leach disappeared from 12530 166th St. Tonganoxie, KS on April 15th-16th 1988. That's 58 miles from the Mohler's home in Bates City--pretty much a straight shot to the west. Independence Center (where the girls reported following the man is in between). There was a bonfire at the house (or nearby) which belonged to the Erwin family (mom's name was Annie). I've also seen the family referred to as the Maples. There was reportedly a lot of alcohol and drug use. Randy was reported to be "messed up" but never seen with a drink in his hand. He disappeared in the early morning hours while waiting for a friend to drive him home.

The Erwin house burned down either weeks or months later. Randy's German Shepherd, Crackers, disappeared four months later.

Randy is rumored to have died in some sort of Satanic ritual (see my former links) at the Storage Caves located at 12755 Loring Dr. I can't figure out, even looking at the graphic timeline just how far this is from the Erwin house. One other issue that makes it confusing is this statement which I also linked to:

"....according to her, there was a party down by the Stranger Caves just northeast of tonganoxie in a rural area. i had previously been to this area as our church pastor and family, owned the property across the road from this location and would hold sunrise service on his property each Easter."

I don't know if this person means the Stranger/Storage (I'm confused which) Caves or the Erwin house.

Another comment:

"My dad worked there for about 4-5 years back in late 80's early 90's, when it was called Inland Storage or something like that. The name changed to Wilson's later, at least in the section where he worked. There have always been problems with collapses in that general area. The road curving up and around the "mountain" has been closed more often than open. I'm somewhat of an "urban explorer" so my ex and I "broke in" a few years ago. There were a lot of dark areas, but further in there were fans and stuff roaring (could this be the "drumbeats" reported by another poster?) and lights on and various items flung around the "rooms" hinting that people were still working there."

I can't go much further without some local input. I also wonder if Randy was wearing any sort of identifiable jewelry which could be checked against what was found in the most recent search. Also, where in the heck is his Mom's car?

At some point after Randy's disappearance, one of the last people to see Randy alive, Steve Daugherty, discovered a severed foot by a river which was turned over to police. LE determined it was not Randy's foot (whose was it?). Steve died shortly thereafter. There is rumor of a cover-up by the local LE but no proof that I can find.

The thing that haunts me is that Randy's parents are still waiting for word of their son and the Mohler girls need some sense of closure concerning this alleged murder. A connection....or not?

Missizzy, I thought that when the girls told the story of the kidnapping and murder that the man who was taken was parked in his car in the driveway, so his car would still have been left in the drive? Unless (if it were Randy) he was parked in some other driveway somewhere?

This is such a dark tale .. what is coming to light now about the molesters and what happened to Randy years ago. Just dark. And evil. President Bush reminded us all of "evil" and I'm not going to let that word go. It has real meaning, relating to much of what is happening in the world now.

  • #305
You are correct. By all accounts all of this is a dark tale. All we know so far is what the search warrants say. The girls reported that they had observed a man get into his car at Independence Center. They followed him to a residence where the girls told the man that their father was having a heart attack. It is unclear what became of Randy's car if this was indeed him.

The only reason I'm getting stuck on this is that this is the only man I can find missing from the area in April 1988. Randy Leach went missing April 15, 1988. The girls were all quite young and reported that this man was 6'2", 300 lbs., and in poor health. Randy was described by his parents as being 6'3", 220 lbs. He was described by his friends that night as "messed up" (possibly alcohol or drugs which was uncharacteristic for him). Randy would have been strong as he was involved in school sports. It was reported in the search warrant that the man who the girls helped murder, threw them off of him when they jumped on him. It was reported that he was stabbed repeatedly and especially in the face.

There are documented "rumors" and "tips" from the time of Randy's disappearance that he was murdered in some sort of Satanic ritual near or in some caves within 20-30 miles of Independence Center. You can check out the links above if you'd like more info. I find it odd that this story is still very much "alive" and has even been made into a play (there are hundreds of forum posts on this plays' site). After all, 45-150 young people were reported to be in attendance at this party. Someone knows something.

I have no idea if Randy was a victim of the Mohlers. I just happen to think that there's a good bit of circumstantial evidence that he might be somehow involved. His story is a sad one. I'd be very interested if anyone else finds another missing person who fits this description, proximity, and timeframe. FWIW, I think evil has always existed and always will. It is up to us to stand up to it and say, "no more". JMO

I believe there is some confusion about the location of the caves if the address you gave is correct for Erwin Farm, and one post I read lead me to believe that the caves were right across from the farm/party site. If this underground storage facility is what they are talking about there is a significant difference in distance - 26 miles - not right across the road. But it is roughly in the middle....

maps

I tried to post the map, but it's not working. If anyone can give me a tip, I'll try to correct it.

I also searched for missing people in this area and came up only with Randy (back in thread #1, I believe). I suggested then, that it is possible that he did get a ride somewhere with another party attendee, or follow them back to their home, and then ended up at their house somewhere near Independence. He might have gone out to the shopping center to get something and ended up as the victim described by the girls. As far as the car goes, the victim would have had the keys in his hand or pocket and any Mohler family member could have gone back after the car at a later time. It is very unlikely that a young girl would know the weight of a person accurately, a very tall 220 pound man would seem huge to a little girl. When questioned by LE, officers often just point to another officer in the room and have the interviewee state whether the person they describe is much larger or smaller than that example person. If they pointed out someone who weighed say 250 and the person said "much larger" the weight could easily just be estimated as 300 pounds.

I'm still highly confused about location. Thank you, IWannaKnow, but the Subtropolis place is in St. Louis (if their website/flyer is correct). I think it is the same type of facility, though. Being out west, I've never seen "storage caves" like this. If you go to the link:

http://www2.ljworld.com/photos/2008/apr/16/145562/

it shows the Erwin house at 12530 166th St. DeSoto, KS and the Storage Caves (I've also seen them called the Stranger Caves, not sure if they're one and the same) are listed as being at 12755 Loring Dr. DeSoto, KS. There's no legend on the map but the two look to be close. When I mapquested the addresses, a reply came back that it was the same location--huh?

We're talking about a reasonably short distance between Randy's home in Linwood, the Erwin house in DeSoto, and the caves. These three locations are all about 40-45 miles from the Independence Center Shopping Center. The Bates City farmhouse is another 17 miles east.

I think Randy sounds like a good physical match. I've seen LE do just what you mentioned, Raeann, when trying to determine size. We need to remember, though, that these women were asked as adults and are going by memory. It's likely they know men who weigh 225 and 300 lbs. In fact, their dad and uncles are all large men. I still think that the weight is close enough for Randy to still be considered a possibility.

One of the facts we don't have, though, is what time of day the girls remember doing this. We've got the month and year but I don't recall a time of day. Does anyone else? Randy left the party (by most accounts) around 2:15 am on April 16th. Did the girls see him at the shopping center early in the morning while it was still dark, when he would have been still drunk or high? Or possibly did they see him later that morning when my guess is that he would have been badly hung-over. Either way, he would have seemed unwell. I see no mention that they were with anyone other than their father. I wonder if another man could have been in the car, though, or following in another car. That person could have taken Randy's keys and driven off in his car. I think there's a lot here that we just don't know. It seems odd that Burrell Jr. would take the risk that Randy could overpower him. But maybe he had some back-up.

A woman who is writing a book about Randy is going to read our thread and see what she thinks. I encouraged her to contact Tricia.

Boy, you learn something new everyday. I guess this area has numerous underground caves that are now used as storage:

http://www.undergroundvaults.com/aboutus/kansascity.cfm

http://www.undergroundvaults.com/AboutUs/hutchinson.cfm

http://www.progressiveengineer.com/features/businessUnderground.htm

(the last link has a discussion of a fire at AmeriCold Storage in 1991. They're listed in KC)

And then I go back to the Randy Leach website Theories section and:

"...... went to a cave [the Loring Drive, National Cold Storage, Inc. cave site, north of Desoto] about a 5–10 minute walk east of the Lenape Cemetery [also north of Desoto]. When they got to the cave, they went down a 2–3 foot hole partially obscured by a tree, then into the cave. The young man stated that inside the cave was the body of a white male hanging from a rope that was attached to the ceiling of the cave."

and

"She advised the reporting officer that she and a friend heard about something going on at Stranger Creek. They drove out there on Leavenworth Road at the cliffs area."

From another website about Randy:

http://www.lawrence.com/news/2006/oct/02/bizzare_events_surrounding_case/

"In 1988, a man told police he had been abducted by satanists and held captive for two weeks in a cave to the east near Kansas City, but not far from Linwood. The man said his abductors threatened to cut off his left arm and had shown him the corpse of a man hanging in the cave. The corpse perhaps was Randy. It was some time before police searched the cave. No bodies were found."

I find it interesting that Satanic involvement was discussed in 1988 when Randy Leach went missing. It's not something that has recently been added to the mix. I researched another missing young man from that timeframe, Steven Newberry, who was killed by three "friends" in a Satanic ritual in Carl Junction, MO. Their trial was held in Sedalia, MO.

http://www.koamtv.com/Global/story.asp?S=7804129

http://www.anthropoetics.ucla.edu/ap0902/sacrifice.htm

"In June 1988, in Sedalia, Missouri, three teens, Theron Roland II, Ronald Clements, and James Hardy, were sentenced to life in prison for the gruesome death of 19-year-old Steven Newberry. The three struck Newberry over the head with a baseball bat more than 50 times during a satanic ritual while chanting, "sacrifice to Satan, sacrifice to Satan." Then they dumped the body in a cistern, which already held the remains of mutilated cats and squirrels that they had previously sacrificed. In a 1991 court of appeals document, Roland claimed he murdered his friend after becoming involved in Satanism."

Could any of this be linked to the murders which the Mohler girls witnessed?

It's not in DeSoto. It's in Bonner Springs!!

http://www.nationalcoldstorage.com/SiteResources/Data/Templates/templatea.asp?docid=514&DocName=Home

"The name National Cold Storage, Inc. (“National”) was first used in 1994. However, our history takes us back many years earlier. The Bonner Springs facility (formerly “Mid Continent Underground”) began in the 1950’s as a limestone mine. Subsequently, the decision was made to develop the mined out space. Floors were poured, walls were built, rock ceilings were bolted, and an ammonia-to-brine refrigeration system was installed. When completed, Bonner Springs included 925,000+ square feet of freezer, cooler, and dry storage areas."

Missizzy - sorry to post and run. My computer keeps crashing. The one I found is in Kansas City, MO (the little research I did before I crashed) but yours sounds like a winner.

Randy Leach has a Myspace page. I'm pretty sure it's OK to link to it as it specifically for info concerning his disappearance. There's a lot of info we haven't seen before.

There's a lengthy forum on the site concerning the play written about Randy's disappearance, "Leaves of Words". Some of those forum posts, including questions from Randy's parents to his friends, are included on the MS page. It sounds to me as if Randy's friends are getting mighty tired of being suspected of covering something up. More than one person says to stop focusing on the party and to look elsewhere.

The following passage concerns me. Who was this girlfriend? She was in Randy's class. She showed horses and went to shows with her parents. She was adopted. She shared something with Randy on Dec. 1, 1987 which upset him so much that he broke the windshield of a car (he doesn't strike me as having been a violent boy). He wanted her to go to counseling about her problems and even told his parents about it.

OK. What kind of problems would a young 16-17 year old girl have that a 17 year old boy would think she needed counseling for in 1987? The first thing that comes to mind is sexual abuse--either from the past or on-going. The reports don't say how old she was when she was adopted.

It could have been PTSD, cutting, depression, or an eating disorder but I really doubt that a teen boy would instantly think counseling for that in 1987. Our schools and communities have done a lot of work with teens in the past 25 years to raise awareness on those issues but teen boys are still notoriously clueless about helping a friend in trouble.

I ran this by my husband and when I got to the part about breaking the family car's windshield, he instantly responded, "She disclosed sexual abuse to Randy." I happen to agree. Any thoughts?

Written by Randy's parents, Harold and Alberta Leach:

"Randy had a girlfriend until February of 1988. They dated steadily for about a year. They were both seniors. They usually went out on a Friday or Saturday evening to see a movie or go bowling. She had babysitting jobs. Sometimes Randy would go there during the evening. She showed horses. He would help her get her horses ready and loaded, and would sometimes go with her and her parents to the horse shows.

She was adopted and had problems from her childhood that bothered her. It caused stress in her relationship with Randy. He came home on December 1, 1987 very upset. He had hit the windshield of the family car with his fist and broke it. He told us about his girlfriend's problems. He wanted her to go to counseling. We agreed to go with them and help in any way that we could. After finals, she told him that she could work on her problems on her own and would not go for counseling. Randy told her that they should go their own separate ways and start seeing others."

Thank you, Texas Mist, for giving us access to all the information on church buildings!

From the Topix link cited earlier:
http://www.topix.net/forum/source/fo...E66V12OI55I28V
"i was shocked to realize that i went to church as a young girl with all of the Mohlers. Mr Mohler Sr was our Pastor at the RLDS Churgh in Platte Woods."

The next link will take you to a full obituary for BM Sr's wife where it appears that BM Sr & family lived in Gladstone in the early 1970's:

[ame="http://officialcoldcaseinvestigations.com/showthread.php?t=10665"]Five Family Members Charged in Missouri Child Sex Case/HUNT FOR BODIES - Cold Case Investigations[/ame]
This was found in #6 from Texaskowgirl:
"Kansas City Star, The (MO) - December 31, 1991
Deceased Name: ALICE R. MOHLER
Alice Rogene Elefson Mohler , 59, rural Bates City, Mo., formerly of this area, died Dec. 26, 1991, in Independence. She was born in Genoa, Colo., and lived in Butler, Mo., Gladstone and Independence before moving to the Bates City area in 1973. Mrs. Mohler taught at preschools in Gladstone and Bates City. She then owned a machine quilting business in Bates City. She received an associate's degree in 1952 from Graceland College, Lamoni, Iowa. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints near Bates City. Survivors include her husband, Burrell E. Mohler Sr. of the home; four sons, Burrell E. Mohler Jr., Independence, David A. Mohler , Lamoni, Jared L. Mohler , Washington, Mo., and Roland N. Mohler , Greenwood in Jackson County; her mother, Eleanor Elefson, Whitehall, Mont.; three brothers, Elbert Elefson, Martinsburg, W.Va., Don O. Elefson, Blue Springs, and Vern Elefson, River Falls, Wis.; four sisters, Jean Stayton and Esther Hoover of Independence, Beth Gamble, Buckner, and Kathryn Sacry, Whitehall; and 11 grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. The family suggests contributions to the Alice Mohler Memorial Fund, in care of the Independence Regional Health Center Hospice; or to the Oblation Fund of the Covenant Restoration Branch, in care of Joe C. Brandon, 2625 Lee's Summit Road, Independence, Mo. 64055. Edition: METROPOLITAN, Page: B5, Record Number: 70429."

Platte Woods is almost 22 miles from Independence in the Gladstone area and the local congregation may have been renamed from the Platte Woods RLDS church to "Highlands" when the church changed its name to Community of Christ. The address is 7615 N Platte Purchase Drive in KCMO. Does anyone have a way of finding out if BM Sr was indeed a pastor there [or maybe an older building nearby] in the early 70’s? We do know that he was a pastor at the Bates City RLDS/COC church for a number of years.

Wintergreen--In everything I've read about the Community of Christ church, I've learned that members are often chosen as "lay ministers" and seem to travel around to different churches to preach. The church leaders were very quick to point out that the Mohlers had no position involving children but I disagree with that statement. I believe that preaching and baptizing does put one in a position of authority over children JMO.

Some fairly recent church bulletins are posted on the web and that's how I determined that Burrell Sr. had preached last Father's Day and that David and his daughter had ushered recently.

I think you just have to really sleuth out the bulletins or wait for locals to comment on Topix. Another thing you might try is to go the main page for churches in a particular state:

http://www.cofchrist.org/directory/activedirectory.asp

and do some checking. I think it's fair to say that the Mohler men moved about the Independence, MO and Lamoni, IA area churches quite regularly. JMO

For more info on the church itself and its practices, you might want to check:

Missizzy, this is some great insight and an angle I would never have thought of. It sounds like whatever she had been through as a child upset Randy so badly that he wanted to see it dealt with. Is it possible that him taking a stand against her childhood abuse made him a target? First of of all, it seems very unusual for a young man to encourage his girlfriend to go to counseling and second of all for his parents to reach out to her the way they did. They sound like such wonderful people. You can see that they were very justified in being proud of the son they raised. I cannot imagine their heartache.

"A man named Smith related information from a twelve-year-old girl who had gone with older friends to a gathering. A large bonfire [6 feet in diameter and surrounded by rocks] was made after the party in Linwood. Randy was taken from Linwood, to the bonfire by persons unknown. Once at the bonfire that was attended by 50-70 people, unknown persons stabbed and mutilated Randy. The body was then laid aside and two other males [who objected to the events] were also killed. The two other males attempted to stop the killing of Randy. One of the others killed was a “Danny,” unknown last name. The bodies were not taken away, but supposedly buried in the area. According to the young girl, she and a friend from Basehor or Bonner Springs were there, as well as some other older friends. Mr. Smith went to the area the following day, and found two notes at different locations at the site described by the young girl. He also found a blanket that was partially burned, evidence of the gathering."

Sounds like a typical sacrifice ritual... Not many want to beleive that this stuff goes on, HOWEVER that is what the abuser/abusers/cult prey on. They think that they can make the victim appear to be crazy, because of how the public percieves the whole satanic ritaul abuse therories from the past, and pr present. The makority of Satanic riutual abuse claims go uninvestigated because they seem "too out" there, and many americans don't beleive that tit goes on.

human, the grossest & most evil stuff I ever read done to a child was in a book When Rabbit Howls by Truddi Chase....amazing that she managed to survive!! After reading it, it is not hard to believe the most bizarre stories that survivors tell.

Thats Nothing

Try reading "Suffer thy Child by Judith Spencer. GRAPHIC GRAPHIC content about Satanic ritual abuse, that has been proven true. The vicitm/survivor that the book is about delveloped poly-fragmented Dissociative Identity Disordser, and is still in therapy as of 95, even though the horrible abuse occured in the 70's.

Texas Mist,
I agree with Missizzy, please be very careful with your research. Your DBF could end up in a sting. Your safety is important too. I have not looked, but wonder if LE, FBI, or that site Perverted Justice has help. The last one was the site that help "To catch a predator" show on NBC (i think)? Stay Safe!

Beimng a former volunteer, or Perverted- Justice, they do NOT take tips, nor do they investigate citizen tips. They also do NOT make fist contact witha potential perp.
