I absolutely LOVED this last episode! Brought tears to my eyes and joy to my heart at the same time! So proud of my town and all of the volunteers and special people it took to help rebuild! :)

I loved the episode. All of the families were great but I developed a super soft spot for Mr Nguyen.

Oh my gosh....me too. What a life that he has had. I got choked up each time he talked about losing everything in the tornado. I just wanted to give him a big hug.

President Obama's initial appearance in Joplin, just after the deadly tornado, was a shot in the arm, a morale booster, for residents - it conveyed the message that the federal government not only cared, but would be hands-on in helping rebuild. So this news is doubly welcome. I thought he'd return. He will.

Commencement ceremony day shy of storm anniversary
JOPLIN, Mo. — President Barack Obama will speak at the Joplin High School commencement ceremony at 7 p.m. Monday, May 21, at Missouri Southern State University, Joplin school Superintendent C.J. Huff announced Monday.

The date was changed from May 20 to accommodate the president’s schedule, Huff said. The May 20 date conflicted with a NATO summit in Chicago. Huff said the president would come to Joplin directly after leaving the summit.

Tuesday the 22nd will be the first anniversary of this horrendous tragedy. Kansas City Star has this in its Sunday paper:

The hardest call: The Joplin tornado through a coroner’s eyes
One year ago, the Joplin tornado transformed Rob Chappel, the Jasper County coroner. Accustomed to working
anonymously, he was suddenly called upon to be the man in the middle of chaos and grief. Now he’s finally ready to share his story.

Lengthy articles, well worth reading, at KC Star link above and Joplin Globe link below.

President to class of 2012: ‘You’re the source of inspiration’ (Joplin Globe)
---
“As I look out at this class and across this city, what is clear is that you’re the source of inspiration to me, to this state, to this country and to people all over the world,” said President Barack Obama in his remarks during commencement, which was held in a packed Leggett & Platt Athletic Center at MSSU.

“But here in Joplin, you’ve also learned that we have the power to grow from these experiences. We can define our own lives not by what happens to us, but by how we respond. We can choose to carry on, and make a difference in the world. And in doing so, we can make true what’s written in Scripture, that “tribulation produces perseverance, and perseverance, character and hope.”

Obama visited with the graduates before entering the ceremony.

“He gave us a little pep talk and told us we did really good, and then shook all of our hands,” said graduate Hailey Carpenter after she received her diploma. “Everybody’s. It was awesome.”
