Forgive me. i'm a horrible English teacher with horrible typing skills. but i know me vocabulary, i does! hee. :D

KC — understand i'm not getting at you, i'm getting at people who honestly don't understand how truly dreadful and life-ending alcohol and driving is.

all of us must try to stop it happening.

if you are ever a friend in a bar where someone is leaving under the influence please try to do your very best to get their car keys from them. trust me.

and even if you are not sure, then do your best also. i have. and have the experience to know that friend is a devil when it's happening. :(

Trust me i do. I've prob taken over 100 random people home when they couldnt even walk straight. I do understand the heartache of drunk driving but..this kid wasnt. He just had it stored there. How do you get your alcohol to your destination when your going out?

I think a lot has to due with his age of 19 not the legal age of 21?

OMG Floh you are cracking me up...LOLOLOLOL

Drunk driving is so sad. At 19 I would not think he is responsible enough to get this, as many young people dont. When I was 9 or 10 A drunk woman hit a girl about 6 on my street and dragged her at least 50-60 feet. The whole time the kids parents are banging on her car, ETC... When she finally stopped she had no idea she had just hit and killed a little girl, right there in front of everyone. I will never ever forget this

We also have a thing called Safe Ride here where they come pick you up..so ive called that & cabs for alot of my friends. Its just not worth it. I have actually lost one friend over it because im really serious about it and didnt let him get into his car and he got mad and thinking im being a "nazi mom trying to control his life". Oh well.

Now if this kid had been caught with open containers...i would totally give 2 thumbs up for this mom.

I can see where KC is coming from.

I guess I can see the mom is coming from too. But the EXTREME reaction?

Yes, I understand that drinking and driving is unsafe. yes, I understand that having an open container is against the law, can raise your insurance rates, and that drinking from that open container is the root of the problem. and having bad friends who are drinking is bad.

BUT - Why NOT take the keys away, as other posters have mentioned? That is what KC suggested? Why is that not OK? Why are other posters blasting her for that? That seems like that is the "moderate" thing to do? I bet that in this situation, most of you would do the same thing... park and block the car, hide the key, and give them some tough love. But I wouldn't sell the car.

Obviously this is the EXTREME reaction on the part of the parent, or it wouldn't be making the news.

If it were my kid, personally, I would tell the kid it was MY car now, and they would not be getting it back for a long time - but I don't know if I would go through the trouble of selling it, as it having another owner (even used) would decrease the car value. and it is a lot of trouble. she just bought it 3 weeks before, so she would be LOSING a ton of money.
does that make sense?

i understand that she is trying to make a point. and it is being made. but it isn't logical to me past the basic "point" - financially or um, well, it doesn't seem like it is worth the trouble of transfering the title, doing the sell, ect.

pedi, I believe they had an agreement before he even got the car.

ETA from the link already posted.

It's overwhelming the number of calls I've gotten from people saying 'Thank you, it's nice to see a responsible parent.' So far there are no calls from anyone saying, 'You're really strict. You're real overboard, lady.'"

AND

Hambleton believes her son but has decided mercy isn't the best policy in this case. She says she set two rules when she bought the car at Thanksgiving: No booze, and always keep it locked.

Yes. and the tragic thing is i would guess maybe over 50% of the posters here or more have a story to tell about alcohol and driving.

maybe i'm biased, but i must now admit to hating alcohol which is why i'm cheerfully a designated driver. i'm extremely popular on New Years! :woohoo:

not that i don't drink: i have been known to have a Bailey's or two. but never with car keys in my possession. :blushing: .

That's the point. She gave the son a car with certain obligations attached. Apparently, there was zero tolerance when it came to alcohol.
I have the same rule here.
ABSOLUTELY NO DRINKING AND DRIVING. If this kid had alcohol in the car, and he is a minor then he is breaking the law.
The mom did the right thing. IMO

I am DD now too, but even before being preggo I didnt drink much. Too many alkies in my fam and I will NEVER be one of those

I thought - and i may be wrong - he had been caught with 'open' containers.

i'm so sad about the loss of your friend. :(
