What was the reason? Was it a hundred sided triangular love affair gone bad? Were they depressed because they weren't able to locate a newly washed car for a long time? Was the fireworks display extremely disappointing? :waitasec:

4.1 in SF? Meh, they wouldn't have even blinked. It takes a lot to get our attention in eq country - I don't even register them at less than 5 (in Los Angeles). It's not abberent at all. Like you said, it's SF! LOL

The difference, as I said earlier, is that we're ready for EQs of a good size on most of the west coast. However, a 3.5 on the New Madrid or back east? Well, that could do a whole lot of damage...which is why I worry about the NM faultline.

That is an absolutely true story. It went on for weeks. It seemed to happen when the birds were migrating. I hated it and as a matter of fact I tried to avoid (University drive) that was the main road from Dade to Broward County, but it would take forever to go through the back roads.

When I was in high school in 1982 (why did I just admit that) My best friends parents bought him a car;

They didn't trust him with anything that wouldn't strain to hit 55 miles per hour. Well anyway. On his way to work one day a bird flew down in front of the car and began flapping it's wings frantically flying in front of the car. Before my friend could hit the brake he hit the bird and it went sailing off over the car.

I told him that one bird probably bet another that he could outfly that piece of :censored:. My friend pointed out that the bird lost the bet.

Okay, seriously the best they have come up with is mass suicide? What next, will they name it HAIRY CANARY?

You have to admit, the news is a little weird: 5,000 blackbirds falling dead from the sky in Arkansas; tens of thousands of dead fish in Chesapeake Bay; 50-100 dead birds found strewn in lawns in Sweden; 40,000 dead crabs washed up on England’s shores; 530 penguins, numerous other seabirds, five dolphins, and three giant sea turtles dead in Brazil; 200 American Coots dead on a Texas bridge; hundreds of snapper fish dead in New Zealand. And the list keeps growing.

Eerie coincidence? Or just a symptom of the digital age where news travels faster than you can say “The End is Nigh?”

Or perhaps a means of connecting the dots unlike in years past. I've often wondered the same thing about the horrible crimes against children. Is it getting worse or are we just noticing it more because of the internet and 24 hour news. A little of both I suspect.
However, ya gotta admit - the digital age gives us a chance at connecting the dots like never before. Dots including the NM faultline, magnetic pole shift, gulf streams dying, possible bio-testing, etc. I hate that the media and talking heads laugh at our questions-they are valid questions! So, give us a rational answer and I'll be OK-till they can come up with a rational answer then my hinky meter is still running!!:waitasec:

Did you feel the one in Indiana the other day?

Twice in the week between Xmas and New Year - late at night I felt a slight 'bump' here in NKY. First time, I thought I was crazy. Second time (I think on the 30th) even my dog looked at me as if to say, did the couch just bounce?

Well, this doesn't sound good. I know we're on a fault but, heck, I don't remember ever getting so many little bumps like this. yikes.

No Thankfully it wasn't felt here, although I always make a note of it. We had one back in 1987 that was clearly felt and shook my dishes in my cabinet, knocked some photos off the wall. That was the first time I had ever really heard about the NM fault line. I was 19 or 20 and it made big impression on me. Til then I thought earthquakes just happened in CA, lol

Then in '04 and '06 we had a couple of more. One of them occurred in the middle of the night and DH and I awoke to ask each other, do you feel that? The bed was shaking and you could feel an odd physical sensation, almost like a thrumming in your bones. The odd thing was, it wasn't a really big quake or anything, noting shook off the walls, minor damages to some older buildings a few towns over. But I will never forget the odd thrumming feel.

Freaked me out. Dogs started barking all over the neighborhood, but only after the quake was done, total silence during. Poor pups were probably in shock.

legalmania - could you provide more details so perhaps we could find an article about that event? Compare notes, so to speak? Maybe they came up with a reason for why it was happening. Do you remember how long it went on?

This was back in the early 90's when only murder and drug busts made the paper. The internet was just getting started so I doubt I could find any real evidence. Most people didn't even have cell phones yet. I just remember every afternoon around 5 because I was on my way home from work and you would see the birds landing in the trees then all of a sudden they would start flying in front of the cars. It would go on for about a couple of weeks and then they would go away till the next year. It would be interesting to find out if they are still doing it.
