MSNBC to Imus: You're FIRED!

In regard to your point about Trent Raznor and what the lyrics to Closer actually mean, couldn't we also take that to mean that some rap lyrics have deeper meanings also?

Some rap lyrics absolutely have deeper meanings. Look at rappers like Talib Kweli, Mos Def, and Wu-Tang clan. But I don't think there's really a deeper meaning to "🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬" and "hoes", unless they mean the groupie girls who are out to cash in on the rappers money and fame.

EDIT: I saw you touched upon that. Hehe.

I too am sorry, IrishMist. It was getting pretty heated. :blushing:

Yes, it was. That's why I was trying to avoid these threads to begin with! :)

Funny how you and I sometimes think we are disagreeing with each other when it turns out we have similar thoughts!

I promise you the average African American suffers all sorts of insults every day, every thing from "driving while black" to being shadowed in stores to being ignored in restaurants to well-meaning but condescending comments about "you people."

99% of the time, those insults are received graciously and silently by African Americans. If they weren't, we'd have rioting in the streets every day of every year.

Can you prove this? They're insulted every single day??

I'm so laughing at "driving while black" Nova!! My sons always use that term. It's sad but TRUE and I have more first hand experience than I can count with my sons.

Grandparents bought my then 17 year old son a beautiful Cadillac Eldorado, about 4 years old. He search for a full year to find that particular color. It was his dream car, He worked and saved his money since he was 14, and bought expensive chrome bling rims for it. I kid you not, he was getting pulled over at least once a week!!!! Every time he was pulled from the car and handcuffed on the curb. He's even been told by police "You must be selling drugs to be driving a car like this". He's been pulled over for the following "reasons": stopping over the white line at an intersection, failing to come to a complete stop, suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle, outdated registration (was good for 8 more months), failure to signal turning in a driveway on a residential street of 4 houses and no other traffic, speeding, running a red light when it just turned yellow but the pickup a full car length behind him was not stopped, the list goes on and on. Each time he would call me as soon as police lights came on. I'd ask what he got pulled over for, his response was always "A DWB in a suspicious vehicle". (Meaning driving while black in a Cadillac) The final straw for me was when both sons were in the Caddy, other one 16 y/o, got pulled over because the cops said they "heard" drugs were in the car. They were going to pick up pizza. (My 17 y/o was a jr in high school and had a job to pay for gas and half the insurance) Cops opened the doors and yanked 17 y/o out with a GUN to his head!! Didn't ask for license, registration, insurance, nothing!!! Both were cuffed on the curb with an officer holding a gun on them, and threatened with "your black a$$ is going to jail for a long time" when they "found something". The car was searched WITHOUT permission. He told the police I was on the way, and I would give permission when I was present for the search, Just as I got 3 blocsk from the stop, all 4, yes 4! police cars left. I asked my sons about it, he said they told him, "Hey dude, you're free to go". WTF!!!!! I immediately took my boys to the police station and raised holy hell, demanded to see the in car video & filed a formal complaint!!! :furious: I was just tired of the BS & putting a GUN to my kids head for NO reason is outrageous. I had an 9 year old Pontiac Grand Am the boys would drive because it was a gas saver. You betcha...they never got pulled over in the hooptie. Yes, racial profiling and harrassment goes on everyday, and my kids are multi-racial with darker skin. :banghead:

 When it was my 16 y/o, straight A, talented and gifted student, turn to buy a car, he originally wanted a Lexus. He told his Grandma, from the way his brother was treated, he'd feel safer buying a Honda or something so the police wouldn't bother him...now how sad is that? This post was pretty long, and that's just some of the experiences my sons, who are viewed as African Americans have dealt with. And they've done NOTHING to deserve it!!!

To the poster who wanted proof it happens, there it is. And I haven't even talked about the experiences of their Black friends who are not gang members, drug users, or drug dealers...But decent kids from decent families who drive nice cars.

Thank you, SadieMae! If anything, the situation is even worse than I had heard.

I think to most white people, DWB sounds like a mere inconvenience.

They should read your post and consider this:

Every traffic stop involves some danger (to both the policeman and the motorist stopped). Multiply that by so many stops and the risk of something going seriously wrong is multiplied many times over.

I imagine that to many young black people, the "message" of DWB is that if your skin is dark in this country, you are assumed to be guilty until proven otherwise.

That's a very different relationship between the individual and political authority than most of us whites ever have to experience.

Oh, I had a dear friend, a black dude, who absolutely refused to be seen w/me in my car with the top down. He swore we'd get pulled over by the cops. The ONE time he was in my car with me and the top was down, sure enough!!

I told him he was nuts; they wouldn't bother us with me driving, but he was right. They weren't rude to me. I can't even remember what the cops said when he stopped me. It was something bogus and stupid. But he kept eyeing my buddy, giving him that cop look, ya know, where he's trying to intimidate him?? I had to literally bite my tongue to keep from getting into trouble.

I had to apologize big time to my friend for not believing him. I had no idea it was that bad till this happened. Damn, makes me mad all over again.

I have heard similar stories. DWB is real..and I cringe when I hear people say that it doesn't exist. It happens way too often, there is no excuse!

A few years ago....a family friend, who was 18 at the time, was leaving a Church function in a "good" part of town. He was pulled over and the officer ordered him out of the car. As he was getting out the car, his cellphone rang and he reached into his pocket. Another officer fired 2 shots. Luckily, he was only hit in the leg and fully recovered. He was not a gang member or drug dealer, just a good kid planning for college. The shooting was justified because the officer feared for his life...go figure! They never gave a "real" explanation for the original traffic stop, and no charges were ever filed.

That's when you turn the tables on the police officer and ask for his name and badge number. They can't refuse. Report this to his precinct and explain the situation.

I'm about 45 miles from Melborne....it's near the beach!! That's the one thing I must the most...living on the coast. Of course...I say that now because there were no hurricanes last year.

Ok... I thought it was fairly close. LOL... yes, those freakin hurricanes. We were visiting my friend when Frances was threatening FL. We only got to stay a couple of days because they were evacuated. What a pain!!

Point taken SadieMae... and I'm sorry to hear it got that bad. I too would have raised some h*ll and then some. It's just wrong...

But I do not believe it is just blacks who get treated this way.

That's not going to help, IMO. ReporterType had no way of proving that that was, indeed the real reason she was pulled over. The cops that I know all stick together, and even if this cop's superior isn't like that, he's still going to take his guy's word over Reporter's.

DWB may not happen everywhere, but I can tell you for a fact that it happens in my county.

I think IM would be right in most cases. The funny thing about this incident was that the cop that pulled me over was a former employee of my mom's when he was at a diff. LE agency!! He didn't let on he recognized the name, but he had to. He was very polite to me!

Sadie, I feel so bad for your kids. How sad that they can't even drive the car they worked their butts off for without being bothered all the freakin' time.

I think it's worse in some places than others, DWB, I mean. It happens a lot for people who drive north out of Miami on I-95. There was a show on once where a rural county cop pulled over a black man who happened to be a high-ranking Miami cop. Very interesting show.

No, but it's just blacks and Latinos (and maybe Arabs nowadays) who get treated that way merely because of the color of their skin. That's what we're talking about.

Nobody is saying other people don't have difficulties in life.

With DWB, it isn't just the inconvenience (though that is bad enough), it is the message given to people of color.

Rapper Kilo has a song called "white horse" that is written about toward WHITE women and the chorus part is "don't ride no white horse." I think that part pretty much speaks for itsself but the song is very degrading. And again, it's written about white women not black.

One part asks "who let jane in the jungle" and then says "I'm gonna run that G*d damn b*tch back to tarzan."

But what is your point exactly? I think we've shown that all genres have music that is considered offensive to some people. If you don't like his music, don't listen to it and don't buy it. If you hear it played on the radio and it offends you, complain.

I don't recall saying that I listened to OR bought music by Kilo. I am not stupid enough to spend money on an artist who directly demeans white women, when I myself am a white woman.
My point exactly is this whole thread is about a white man who made comments directed towards black girls and lost his job, and then it was brought up that many black rap artists called black girls the same thing, and worse. Then people started throwing out songs and/or names of artists who demean women, and I threw out another artist/song.

It not just blacks, my sons have hispanic friends with "lowrider" type vehicles. One of his friends came to my house to show my son how his seats, trunk, amps, cd player and everything was RIPPED out of his car on a traffic stop search. He gave them permission to search his vehicle, he had nothing to hide, so he let them. They DESTROYED that kid's car! There was nothing his parent's could do about it when they went to the station. He gave permission, and oh yeah, he didn't even get a ticket!

I was shocked at viewing the incar video of my sons pizza stop. He was grabbed with a gun already drawn, slammed on the hood of his car, with the gun at his head, while another officer cuffed him. My youngest was shown with hands out the window, pulled out and cuffed. They were led to the curb, and PUSHED down. An officer was standing behind them with his gun out. I also asked the LT about "hearing " drugs were in the car, and what suspicion, evidence, proof, or even hearsay they had. He had no words to say. My sons have no piercings, tattoos, jewelry, "grills", nothing to even associate them with drugs/gangs, even now at 21 & 19. You're right, it's very wrong.
