Family still seeks answers in disappearance of Jermain Charlo
The search for missing Native American Jermain Charlo continues as friends and family gathered to honor her 24th birthday on Tuesday.

But what should be a celebration is instead a time of frustration, as family and friends continue to search for answers. Friends and family gathered to reflect on the life of their missing loved one on her first birthday since she’s gone missing.

[...]

“I can’t live thinking that she’s in a ditch or she’s in body pieces! I have to live the hope that she’s alive and whatever circumstances she is going through whatever is holding her back from being able to come back home,” Charlo’s aunt VM said. “That when she comes back we can help her get through that. We have to stay positive.”

The investigation has been just as active as it was since Charlo went missing roughly 10 months ago when she was last seen near the Orange Street Food Farm in Missoula.

The lead detective on the case — Guy Baker of the Missoula Police Department — told MTN News that they continue to follow leads and conduct interviews.

He added there have been several persons of interests in the case, but they still are unsure what happened to Charlo. That lack of answers is what’s most frustrating for family members.

[...]

“Jermain is very fun, she’s spontaneous, she loves to be outdoors, she loved hiking, shove loved to draw, she could knit like nobody’s business. She cared about the planet so she would save plastic bags and knit them to save the environment,” Morigeau said. “She loved to be outdoors and she loved to take her boys fishing.

So I can across this site, in a strange way. I was looking for a different site and had typed in a name. For some reason. The MTDOJ MISSING PERSON CLEARING HOUSE WEBSITE , HAD THE PERSONS NAMR IN THE FIRST RESULTS PAGE.

THE PERSON I THOUGHT I WAS LOOKING FOR ON AN UNRELATED WEBSITE, NEVER APPEARED.

BUT I FROM THE SAME RESERVATION AS LIZ CHARLO. AND I WAS SCROLLING THRU I SEEN HER NAME... RECOGNIZED THE DATE...I THOUGHT I HAD SEEN THAT DATE WITH ANOTHER PERSON IN MISSOULA.

I WAS RIGHT. WELL CLOSE IT WAS TWO MISSING PERSONS TEO DAYS BEFORE AHE WENT MISSING. WHICH IS ODD. NEITHER OF THEM WAS FOUND. ONE IS BELIEVED DROWN, WENT HIKING AND WAS NEVER SEEN. ALTHOUGH MY HISBAND IS SAME BUILD AND WEIGHT. I DONT SEE HIM HIKING EITHER. BUT ESPECIALLY THAT EARLY IN THE SUMMER, WHILE WEARING CAMO.

THE OTHER MISSING PERSON WAS PRESUMED DEAD, AS I HAVENT FOUND OTHER WISE, BUT HE WAS PRESUMED DEAD, AND WAS HOMELESS. THE LAST FOUR YEARS MISSOULA HAS A MEMORIAL FOR ALL THE PEOPLE WHO DIED HOMELESS. HIS NAME WAS INCLUDED ON THE LIST. WHICH, CONSIDERING THE YEAR BEFORE THEY HAD HALF AS MANY PEOPLE NAMED IN THE MEMORIAL THE YEAR BEFORE. THEY HAD 24 NAMES THEY READ ON DECEMBER 21, 2019.

THING IS THERE WERE A TOTAL OF 13 MISSING PERSONS REPORTED THAT YEAR. 4 WERE IN MISSOULA. 3 WERE WITHIN 3 DAYS OF EACH OTHER. FROM THE 14-16. JERMAINE BEING THE LAST. THERE WAS ONE REPORTED IN ANOTHER TOWN ON THE SAME DAY SHE WENT MISSING. APPARENTLY A GUY FELL INTO THE YELLOWSTONE RIVER FROM A BRIDGE. I DONT KNOW HOW UNLUCKY OR LUCKY IT WOULD BE TO BE SOMEONE WITNESSING A PERSON FALLING OFF THE BRIDGE, AT 5 AM. BUT IT TURNS OUT THE GUY WHO REPORTED IT, WAS A FRIEND OF THE MISSING PERSON WAS LIVING WITH.

BUT GOING BACK INTO THE EARLIER PART OF 2019. THE FIRST OF THE 4 PEOPLE WHO ENDED UP MISSING , WAS A WOMAN WHO WAS ALSO HOMELESS LIKE THE GUY WHO WAS READ INTO MEMORIAL. HER NAME WASNT READ AT THE ME.ORIAL. THE REPORTING PARTY WAS HER FATHER AFTER HE HAD NOT HEARD FROM HER FOR SEVERAL WEEKS. NONE OF THESE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN FOUND.

THERE WAS A WOMAN FROM BILLINGS WHO WAS ALSO TRIBAL WHO ENDED UP MISSING A MONTH OR SO LATER. I BELIEVE I READ SHE WAS FOUND.

IN ALL HONESTY, I THINK THERE IS A SERIAL KILLER, OR THE DISAPPEARANCES ARE RACE BASED IN PART. THE OTHER, THESE PEOPLE ARE STREET PEOPLE. THE RISE IN CRIMES AGAINST HOMELESS IS INCREASING. AND INFACT THE PERSON AND THE WEBSITE I WAS FIRST SEAECHING FOR, IS KIND OF AN EXTREMIST. PART OF ANTI INDIAN SOVEREIGHN GROUP.

CHARLO IS A PROMINENT NAME FOR THESE TRIBES HE WAS A WELL KNOW REVERED SALISH CHIEF. AND WITH THESE "Unprecedented times". The narrative isn't that far fetched. Big issues regarding the tribes water righta have been a big issue.

Unless the one homeless guy was really found I have to question why someone felt it proper to have his name read.

If anyone is not from the area. I would like to be able to offer any viewpoints like the fact where she was seen walking. That was a heck of a distance.

The family, her grandma is on friends list. And my daughter participated in a MMIW WALK. So her interest and hope of her to come home to her family, is forever on all out minds here.

I dont know if my input, helps. But I cant believe that t fact isn't widely know. The year after had seen a fairly large increase in missing persons. But this year. Half way they, the amount of missing persons has surpassed that year and we are barely half way thru.

Justice Department Working with Tribes on Missing-Person Cases
''HELENA, MONT. - Jermain Charlo vanished in June 2018. The member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes has not been seen since.

Valenda Morigeau, Charlo's aunt, reported her missing to the Missoula Police Department in the days after her disappearance. But Morigeau said the detective initially assigned to the case failed to take the report seriously and was slow to act, a pattern she said is common when Native Americans report missing loved ones.''

''Charlo's case brought the problem of missing and murdered Indigenous women to the fore in the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Now, almost three years after her disappearance, the tribes on Thursday are the first in the nation to complete a community response plan — a U.S. Department of Justice initiative aimed at creating collaboration among law enforcement agencies — including tribal police, county police and federal authorities — when Native Americans go missing on tribal land.''
