What if the abductor (assuming there was one) had stopped and opened the trunk just before the call came in; in a fit of rage realizing Rita was still alive and had a phone with her, he shot her. Again, wondering how long LE stayed on line after the shots. They would stay on the line until they located the car, right? But, when the shots were followed by "nothing," does that mean the call was still connected, with dead air, or does that mean the call disconnected? I don't think we have the answer yet. If the call disconnected, it could be because Rita was holding the phone and then dropped it when she was shot - disconnecting the battery - or because her abductor grabbed the phone and hung up (then closed the trunk afterwards). More details about that call and the sequence of events will provide a clue to what really happened, combined with forensics and ballistics evidence.
