Found Deceased MT - Selina (Selena) Not Afraid, 16, I-90 rest area between Billings & Hardin, 1 Jan 2020

"No foul play suspected" and yet it appears a 16 year old was served alcohol to the point of being drink and left at a rest stop in inadequate clothing in very cold weather and in a very vulnerable state (drunk). She might not have been shot or strangled but she still died at the hands of adults around her who could have prevented this death. MOO.

We all need to take care of each other. I'm so sorry no one was there for you when you needed them most Selena. MOO

I'm not a lawyer but I hope if there are alcohol or drugs found in Selina's system, that the "adults" with her in the van are held responsible, in some way, for her death.

I dont know if I've ever had a drink on new years day. I guess some people swear by the "hair of the dog" practice, but when I'm hungover, the last thing i want is alcohol. Just the thought of it makes me want to vomit. Not saying that she wasn't drinking that day. I could see it being more likely for her to be using other "substances" to deal with a hangover. If she was even hungover...... Sad story.

IIRC, the 14 year old Henny Scott's cause of death was hypothermia, with alcohol being a contributing factor. Her death was considered accidental.
Perhaps you're thinking of 18 year old Kaysera Stops Pretty Places whose death was deemed "Undetermined." It's an ongoing investigation so I doubt we'll hear any more details from the autopsy, at this time.

Law enforcement officials said a van carrying Selena home the day after a New Year’s party in Billings had pulled into the rest stop after breaking down, and then reportedly started up again and driven away without her. Nobody had heard from her since.

So incredibly sad. Adults left her out there alone, miles from home.

This is Montana, it is not like there is a McDonald's and a gas station every 5 or 10 miles. You can easily go 100 miles, between gas stations, or more down there.

It's heartbreaking, such bright Beautiful young women, it's a hard life up there, kids need to stick together ! This is just a horrible end and they were just starting to get out on their own. Young people need to look out for each other, always MOO

There has to be more to this story. Why would she wander off like she supposedly did? And she only made it 3/4 of a mile? I'm very surprised that none of the searches had already found her in presumably relatively flat, open, barren land. I guess it just goes to show how difficult it is to cover large areas of land with a ground search.

Did anything ever come of the other girl being covered in scratches, and shoeless? I remember reading early on that both girls may have been running from a car. Was this proven false? Or at least denied by the other girl?

I am heartbroken over the outcome of this case.
I know I personally have put myself in similar situations as Selina. I at 16 would tell my parents I was staying over with a good friend and really be meeting up with people 18 and older to party. At 17 I had a 21 year old drug dealer boyfriend my parents didn’t know about. This case hurts because I have been in a very similar situation while also a minor. But I sure as heck didn’t “feel” like a minor. Looking back now I think good lord!! What was I thinking?? So it wrecks me to think of how similar Selina and I were at that age...it makes me so sad. I cannot imagine at 16 experiencing that much pain and loss. I can only imagine that that sort of distress in your life might age you and might make you feel you are older than she really was...

Selina Shelley Faye Not Afraid, 16, was last seen at a I-90 rest area between Billings and Hardin around 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Not Afraid is described as a five foot nine inches tall, 133 pound Native American female. She was last seen wearing a black coat, grey sweater, blue jeans, and grey ankle boots.

Not Afraid has a scar near her mouth and a tattoo of a cross on her middle finger.

Not Afraid left a disabled vehicle at the I-90 rest area at mile marker 474 between Billings and Hardin. She left a disabled vehicle at the rest area and was seen on foot walking into an adjacent field to get to the rest area, the release stated.

She is possibly intoxicated and not dressed for cold weather conditions.

The body did not have knife or gunshot wounds, ligature marks, extensive bruising, etc. which would indicate a homicide (foul play).
Possibly an accidental death due to hypothermia (?), alcohol poisoning (?), heart failure secondary to methamphetamine ingestion (?). Possibly she had been drinking, passed out and died of exposure (?).
We'll just have to wait for the autopsy and investigation.

The Big Horn County Coroner is Terry Bullis of Bullis Mortuary in Hardin. He has the option to defer to a Coroner's Inquest, which is similar to a grand jury. He may also assign the responsibility for determining cause of death the new Eastern Montana Crime Lab in Billings, a unit of the Forensics Science Investigations division of the Montana Department of Justice. The lab is backlogged at this time, with several months delay for final results.
