The attack is believed to have began shortly after train left Peterborough station, with travellers hiding in toilets as one suspect carried a 'big knife', witnesses have said.

One passenger described 'blood everywhere' as the 'horrific' scenes on the train descended into 'pure chaos'.

'It was a terrible scene, really violent. It was like something from a film,' they told The Sun. 'It didn't feel real and just sparked pure panic onboard.

'Shocked onlookers were shaken and traumatised.'

Another eyewitness detailed commuters emerging from the train 'covered in blood' after it arrived on the platform.

Train operator LNER have issued a 'do not travel' warning to passengers, saying 'disruption is expected until the end of the day'.

Eye witness describes scenes as man 'waving large knife'

A witness told Sky News of scenes aboard the train, and of a person "waving a knife".

His full statement reads: "What happened was I was in coach G, and there was quite a few people coming through coach G, andone of the people that were coming through... I heard them say..'I've been stabbed'...

"So they were making their way through the carriage to get away from the incident, from the suspect.

"They were extremely bloodied. That person ended up when we pulled in, they were basically on the floor.

"We couldn't progress further down the train away from the suspect, because that person ended up collapsing on the floor."

"We were ushered out of the station on the platform, and there was multiple people that had been stabbed that were making their way down, but the suspect had also come off the train as well.

"So while we were being told to come out of the station, the suspect was obviously running around them as well, and I don't know the reason. No one knows the reason why."

He added: "The armed police were pointing to the suspect as we come off the train, I asked what that suspect looked like. They said, it's a Black male in all black, so a black hoody.

"And then at the back of the station, walking calmly as the police were coming through, the armed police, I said, I think that's the guy.

"And essentially, as they got closer to him, they started shouting, to get down, get down. He then was waving a knife, quite a large knife, and then they detained him.

"I think it a taser that got him down in the end, but I only saw one person at that point.

"I did not see anyone get stabbed, but there was a lot of people being moved away from being treated for injuries and coming away with colleagues.

"I'd say probably maybe 12 people."

Police have extended the cordon and asked media to move back. Not sure if they are about to bring bodies off the train or something else. Sky news live was showing lots of paramedics moving towards the train.

''Older man 'blocked' attacker from stabbing younger girl, says eyewitnesspublished at 22:18

An eyewitness who was on the train at the time of the incident says passengers were left in "pure panic" as bleeding victims called out for help.

Olly Foster told the BBC he initially heard people shouting "run, run, there's a guy literally stabbing everyone", and believed it might have been a night-after-Halloween prank.

Within minutes, people started pushing through the carriage, and Foster noticed his hand was "covered in blood" as there was "blood all over the chair" he had leaned on.

An older man "blocked" the attacker from stabbing a younger girl, leaving him with a gash on his head and neck, Foster said. Passengers around him used jackets to try to staunch the bleeding.

He added that the only thing people in his carriage could use against the attacker was a bottle of Jack Daniel's whiskey, leaving them "praying" that he would not enter the carriage.

Although it lasted 10 to 15 minutes in total, Foster says the incident "felt like forever".

10 people are reported to be in hospital, most in a life-threatening condition, after a stabbing spree by two men on an East Coast main line train yesterday. This is being treated as a terrorist incident and the two men have been arrested. No doubt a lot more details will come out in due course.

There is already a thread.

Damn. I didn't think to look there. I'll ask for this one to be deleted or merged with it.

This is literally insane. It's so scary that crimes like these are becoming more frequent. Imagine being on a train where somebody is stabbing people with nowhere to go... you can't even escape it.

My first thought was about the black man stabbing the Ukrainian girl in NYC on the subway. There are lots of instances where crimes are almost re-committed in a similar way but differently shortly after. Sarah Everard followed by Sabina Nessa, Bondi Junction in Australia followed by Hainault in London just weeks later. I'm sure there are loads more too. It's like people get crime inspiration.

Police to give update in Huntingdon after 10 people injured in train stabbing......

Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Paul Bristow has just spoken to BBC's Laura Kuenssberg.

He says the British Transport Police, who are leading the investigations, will give an update shortly on the stabbing attack - we expect a news conference to start at 10:00 GMT.

Bristow adds that counter-terrorism police are on site and advising the British Transport Police.

The mayor also commends the work of the emergency services, first responders and law enforcement, saying the train crew "responded amazingly" by stopping the train at Huntingdon station.

Police are about to give an update.

I can’t begin to imagine how scary this attack was for the passengers. The train had no option but to carry on running for about 15 minutes from when the attack started at Peterborough to the next station.

Thoughts are with those injured

The world has gone mad.
