Fernando Guerrero Pérez, 41, who worked as a hairstylist, was a prominent LGBTQ+ activist in Papantla, Veracruz and a candidate in the June 19, 2022 election for the presidency of his local Unidad Deportiva (Sports Union).
Fernando was reported missing on June 16, 2022 and the State Search Commission of Veracruz released a missing persons flyer. The following day, June 17, his naked body was found in his home on Azueta Street (other reports say he was found behind a self-service gas station), only one block away from City Hall in the city center of Papantla, Veracruz.
His body was wrapped in a sheet and showed signs of torture. He had 35 stab wounds on his neck, chest, and face and died from hypovolemic shock as a result of massive blood loss.
Security camera footage showed Fernando in the company of an unidentified male who was seen trying to steal Fernando's truck, although he was unsuccessful.
According to Leonardo Ruiz, president of the Orgullo Xalapa association, acts of violence against the LGBTQ+ community have been on the rise in Veracruz. "In Veracruz we are in mourning every day, enough is enough. They are killing us," Ruiz said. Jazz Bustamante, a member of the National Observatory against Hate Crimes and the Soy Humano collective, noted that the state of Veracruz has one of the highest rates of hate crimes against the LGBTQ+ community in Mexico, with 8 such crimes being reported so far this year alone.
