I'm not linking, but I'm warning that there is video out there of the highrise building under construction collapsing and it is frightening. At least one video was taken by a worker, and they have to break and run for their life along with dozens of other people.

According to this article, 43 construction workers are believed to be trapped by the collapse.

I fear that the impact on the people of Myanmar is going to be dreadful. They're so isolated because of the war, and international support that would usually come to aid in the time of a natural disaster won't be available.

TWO earthquakes, back to back. Though some articles are describing them as an earthquake with a powerful aftershock.

Myanmar was rocked by two consecutive earthquakes, measuring 7.7 and 6.4 on the Richter scale, according to United States Geological Survey (USGS) on Friday.

The iconic Ava Bridge in Myanmar’s Mandalay collapsed in the quake.

At least 3 people died, while 81 others were reported missing after an under-construction skyscraper collapsed in Thailand’s Bangkok

Myanmar: – 20 dead in Mandalay, many injured – 5 dead in Taungoo

A major hospital in Myanmar’s capital city turned into a “mass casualties area”

Keep in mind, the 2010 Haiti earthquake that killed over 100k people was a 7.0

Mosques, temples, schools, hospitals and government buildings are amongst those where there are known fatalities or where people are trapped.

Despite my fears the military junta controlling Myanmar would not be open to aid, the opposite is the case. The Senior General essentially in a press release said "we need all the help, please send us any help you can". So it's happening as fast as possible.

Dam reported to have burst in Mandalay

The Associated Press has cited Christian Aid as saying that its partners and colleagues on the ground reported that a dam burst in Mandalay, causing water levels to rise in the lowland areas.''

There have been at least fourteen aftershocks so far.

Both India and China have dispatched rescue teams to Myanmar.

The Guardian has good footage of Myanmar, which because of the political climate has featured less in the visual depiction of this disaster so far. It's hard for journalists in Myanmar, and the internet is restricted.

Russia has also said they're sending 120 rescuers, search dogs, and doctors.

Now over 1000 dead in Myanmar, over 2000 injured.

This Al Jazeera news crew was there for an interview with government officials when the earthquake hit. I don't know if they usually cover disasters, or just politics, but they're doing well. (Video, a little down from the top.)

Video footage from the back of a motorcycle of Mandalay and Sagaing.

Deadly quake hits Myanmar: At least 1,000 people are dead after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Mandalay in Myanmar and rocked neighboring Thailand. The quake was the largest to hit Myanmar in more than a century. The US Geological Survey estimated that the death toll could top 10,000.
Well, we're a day in and confirmed toll is over 1000. You only have to look at the footage of how many buildings are destroyed in Mandalay and Sagaing in that one motorcycle video and think about how many people were likely in each of those buildings when the first quake struck to realise it's not a ridiculous number.

Also, the military junta were bombing an area of Sagaing that's not controlled by them literally within minutes of the first quake, so they're not exactly taking the day off to let people living in those areas try to save themselves or their families from their homes falling down around their ears. We're seeing pictures of the cities, but scuttlebutt in the articles (virtually nobody is speaking with the press with anything but total anonymity because Myanmar) is that things are very bad in the rural areas and the villages. Someone said something about how ridiculously lowball the numbers were because they knew of a hundred dead in just one village. Whoever's updating the wiki, I take my hat off to them, because they've got a lot of detailed information that isn't out there in the generic English language publications and articles.

'More than 1,000 people have been killed in Myanmar and thousands more injured following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that was also felt in neighbouring countries. Hundreds are believed to be trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings - including at least 50 construction workers who are unaccounted for after a high-rise was flattened by the earthquake in Bangkok, Thailand. More than 90 people are believed trapped in the rubble of an apartment block in Mandalay, Myanmar, a Red Cross official tells AFP. A rescue team in Mandalay tells the BBC: “We are digging people out with our bare hands.”
