Myanmar death toll could top 10,000

Oh God I pray for these people. I also pray that any one of us is NEVER in their shoes.. I can't even begin to imagine their devastation.

It looks very much like they are imposing their own form of genocide. :(

What are they so afraid of and hiding that they won't allow in help?

I'm not sure. There isn't much left to hide. Besides these are aid workers that they are denying entrance to, not our military. The worst possible thing was for them to confiscate those supplies. However, their people will NEVER know that it was their own government who did this to them. What can those suffering be thinking about the rest of the world??

They must feel abandoned and completely on their own God love them. What an awful situation and the rest of the world is trying to help either with funds or practical aid. It's like watching someone drown and being held back from trying to rescue them. So damned criminally sad.

So heartbreaking.. We are the wealthiest country in the world and there is nothing we can do right now. Whyyy won't they let us help? These people over there don't ask for much. They probably only eat one small meal a day which consists mostly of rice.

I just read that ALL of the supplies that they allowed the UN to bring in have been CONFISCATED BY THE GOVERNMENT and are NOT being handed out to the population. Unfortunately, this is another one of those situations where the military will be fed first and the rest of the citizens and die. Very, very sad indeed.

you are 100% correct-not unlike Iraq when they were sanctioned in the 90's and they were not allowed to sell their oil unless it was for food-all of the food was seized and given to the military and Saddam's co-horts while others starved...

It is a very calculated way of preventing the world from being able to influence what happens politically in this country-imagine if these people received supplies from someone other than the hand of the government...they might actually decide that the life they have been living under the control of the junta is not all that hot, even before this devastating event.

And although I usually believe in an open handed policy regarding tragedy in the world, I also agree with the poster who stated that Katrina victims are STILL begging for assistance and receiving none when we can immediately send relief overseas....

I've heard that they're allowing some aid in now, including aid from the United States. They had the nerve to claim they were worried we would invade.:confused: Anyway, I watched the news last night and they were listing all the countries that were giving hundreds of millions of dollars in aid and then they listed the "oil rich" countries who came up with a couple of million. :waitasec::waitasec: Dirty MOFOs.

There is to be much celebrating this weekend as I'm a mom, I have an amazing mom and I love my MIL very much as well. It makes me sad though to know how much suffering there will be for all those 'moms' in Myanmar where they won't be celebrating anything at all and will be lucky to have enough food or medical care for their children. Sometimes it's hard to step away from my laptop and let all this go.

I think of Sharon Rocha as well.

It makes me so angry that Myanmars own government would withhold such needed aid.:furious:

Jeana did mention that 'some' aid is finally trickling in. Hopefully they will see the world only wants to help (NOT invade:rolleyes:) and opens the door to much more relief very soon!!

Today CNN reported that the peonic leaders of this little country are letting aide in....but only aide they approve of.:banghead:

They need to accept every single bit of aide they're offered. I feel so sorry for the Myanmar people.
May God watch over them.

This truly has been and is a huge crime against humanity. I can't imagine this kind of thinking in the 21st century. There are agencies that you can give to; have they been posted? But how do we know they will really get it?

These people are as bad as Hitler and his govt. as far as I'm concerned. And for China and Russia to agree with them is repulsive.

Marthatex,
You are so right.
These people are being denied the basic essential needs of all human beings. It matters not ones religion, or political or military stance.
It is heartbreaking.

Agreed, and the news today reported that the generals have re-labeled the aid with their own names, and are sending it to their own regions.

Horrible!

By sending aid we are furthering their evil regime, by not sending it, we allow a few more people to die.

~I would have NO problems with us invading their corrupt govt. if they don't start allowing these poor people to basic neccesities for survival.

Really? We're not the babysitters of the entire world. While I think there are many countries with serious problems, they're not our problems. If we keep sticking our noses into situations that don't concern us, life as we know it will cease to exist and we'll create more enemies than we've already got.

No I know we are not but I just feel so bad for any human suffering. Esp. in this case when it don't have to be as bad as it is.

And aren't you impressed that the junta declared today an election day so that they could put for a constitutional amendment to consolidate their powers...all military and police officers were directed to keep peace at the poles instead of providing/distributing relief to the people...heartwarming. Not.

I have such a hard time believing this kind of thing can still happen in the year 2008. :( What bothers me is that it's not just food and decent water that they need...there are many injured that could be saved and they are just dying a slow, agonizing death.
