Myanmar death toll could top 10,000

I have such a hard time believing this kind of thing can still happen in the year 2008. :( What bothers me is that it's not just food and decent water that they need...there are many injured that could be saved and they are just dying a slow, agonizing death.

And all the diseases that are going to be spreading very soon, if not already, are going to affect the children and the very old first. These diseases are completely treatable and unnecessary. I feel that the government is trying to get rid of these poor people and that's the reason they won't allow any aid in. I mean its not like so many other governments of this kind who actually go in and kill the people themselves. They're just going to let nature take its course.

Monks try to help

The military regime has moved to curb the Buddhist clerics' efforts, even as it fails to deliver adequate aid itself. Authorities have given some monasteries deadlines to clear out refugees, many of whom have no homes to return to, monks and survivors say.
"There is no aid. We haven't seen anyone from the government," said U Pinyatale, the 45-year-old abbot of the Kyi Bui Kha monastery sharing almost depleted rice stocks and precious rainwater with some 100 homeless villagers huddled within its battered compound. (more sadness at link)

This makes me too sad and upset to even be able to read about.

How something like this can still go on in the 21st century, is just beyond. I hope God smites the evil rulers down, and the innocents have a special place in Heaven.

It's just really hard for mothers like us who are used to "nurturing" or "saving", especially children.

Are those mean rulers all male? I can't imagine women denying aid.

IF my husband were there, I'm sure he would be glad to "dive in" and start diagnosing and triaging, etc. I'm sure there are lots of doctors on those ships and helicoptors just so frustrated and waiting to do something.

Ugh.

New cyclone forming:

The United Nations' weather center is tracking a nascent tropical storm that is likely to become a cyclone, said Amanda Pitt, the spokeswoman of the world body's humanitarian relief program, in Bangkok, Thailand.
"This is terrible," she told reporters, adding that it could further jeopardize the people who survived Cyclone Nargis on May 3 and the efforts to distribute aid for them. (more at link)

We must keep these people and this country in our prayers folks.
I heard this on the radio an hour or so ago and found an article that confirms it. :(

Another Powerful Storm Headed For Myanmar

Yangoon, Myanmar (AHN) - Myanmar may be headed for a second natural disaster as a powerful storm was spotted headed towards the country devastated two weeks ago by Cyclone Nargis on May 3.
According to the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center, there is a strong chance another major tropical cyclone would form within the day and ravage once more the Irrawaddy Delta.

Well, the red cross disagrees with the junta's revised figures...they have LOW balled the number to 100,000. The Junta did agree to allowing in 160 aid workers, but no one knows if they will be permitted to the hardest hit delta...words cannot describe what I am feeling at the incredible brutality it takes to just let people die rather than bringing in the help needed.

Wonder if the UN will take further steps so the Myanmar people can receive more help?

New storm deepens misery in cyclone-hit Myanmar
YANGON, May 16 (Reuters) - Torrential tropical downpours lashed Myanmar's Irrawaddy delta on Friday, deepening the misery of an estimated 2.5 million destitute survivors of Cyclone Nargis and further hampering the military government's aid efforts.

Despite the latest storm, which is likely to turn already damaged roads to mud in the swamp-covered region, the former Burma's ruling generals insist their relief operations are running smoothly
